I'm new to archery and dont understand the slang. I love the longbows and have a 60# martin savannah finally headed to me. I like the stiff carbon arrows and dont care for the clinking aluminum shafts or inconsistent wood shafts. I hunt small hogs.....cause they taste better...and deer. I've been told I need heavy 500g shafts and 125 grain broadheads with feather fletches because of the wood bow?!? If someone could bring me up to speed and give me a bit of an arrow vocabulary I would be grateful. Thanks!! I want to set up to assemble my own arrow combos to experiment with.....any advice on equipment?!
First you will need to match your carbons to the bow. Then you can play around with point weight and arrow length. Find your draw length with a trad bow it most likely will not be the same as a compound draw length. And the carbon boys will be along with plenty of advice on arrows.
And I shoot wood only and the only inconsistance is the way they are misrepresented.
welcome ;)
Welcome! This is great bunch of people who like to help out. They have really helped me.
i shoot my carbons full length. my carbons are beman classic 500. i use the full 75 grain hidden insert, a 5 grain aluminum screw in adapter and a 125 grain magnus1 2 blade broadhead. i also use 5 1/2" shield cut fletching. im also shooting this arrow combination from a 56" 52#@28 draw recurve. i cronoed this once at a local tournament. i get 179 fps. i have also killed a doe with this combo and get full penetration. however your bow pulls a full 8# heavier than mine. i dont know your draw length or your previous archery experience. are coming from shooting a wheel bow, if so you may be overbowed. it is different, and i do agree with others have said ,it may change your draw length. do you have someone in your area that also shoots trad that is willing to help you transition?any how , welcome aboard.i would also look into masters of the bare bow volume 1 do some research here. and good luck. rv
Didnt mean to offend you about wood arrows....I'm a custom woodworker of 22yrs. I know wood....if its straight today wait til the humidity gets up or the temp change. I love wood but she can be a cantankerous b----!
Thanks broketooth.
Good to have you! Well your not gonna find 500gr carbon shafts on every corner. U need to pick a shaft that is spined closest to you bow, like a GT 5575 or CX4560 to name a couple. U might get 270gr out of a 5575 shaft, but u'll make up for it in point weight gettin 'er to fly well. Im shootin 4560's with 350gr up front with best results out of a 50lb bow. Check out bowmaker.net then the tuning page there and u'll have most of the info U need. Good luck!
Glad you are here. Shoot wood to start. Then go from there.

welcome to trad, pilgrim. :wavey:
you have MUCH to learn/understand.
for the very most part, starting your trad adventure with a 60# longbow is a major mistake.
read the 'trad archery for bowhunters' article in my sig line ...
ALSO - please do not make more than one post on the same topic theme. your other two posts that ask the same questions have been removed.
Thanks Rob....my first instinct as a macho athlete, was to be offended ....but I appreciate your writing down that tutorial advice and wil heed it. Thanks and God bess!
