Title: "HUNTING"...Bunnies, where????
Post by: redeemed on September 06, 2011, 07:36:00 AM
Bunnies can not be tracked, and they don't (?) use a typical path (do they), soooo that being said, how do I KNOW where bunnies will be. I have still-hunted around many fields and haven't seen bunnies. Am I movin to fast? is there a particular food source that will bring the bunnies in or are they more after the cover???

You can track them in the snow or the early morning dew.  If I am bunny hunting, i move fairly fast and cover alot of ground. When I spot one...NINJA MODE!!

God Bless,
Nathan

rabbits love cover, when we used to hunt without a dog in northern Michigan we would move slow and scan likley spots carefully. In winter a hares black eye would sometimes grab your attention agaist a white backround of snow and fur. The best way in my opinion is to hunt with beagles. they will chase them in a big circle and eventualy coming back around to you.

Some places just don't have many to begin with.  You could be suffering from a lack of cover and or an overabundance of predators. Are you hunting public land.  There could be a lot of gunhunters around.  They can decimate a population in short order.  If there are enough bunnies around you can't miss them.  I hunted a place in Ariz. once where the ground was literally carpeted with their droppings. Dogs do help.  Hunting rabbits with beagles is one of my favorite things to do with bow in hand.  My first running bunny taken with the help of my dogs is one of my fondest memories.

I really dont see many bunnies here...in the fall, spring, yepper..so, is it that I need a beagle, or is it that come fall predation takes over cuz other food sources get scarce for predators in the fall???

It's not the only way, but the best way to hunt rabbits is over Beagles.  Period.  It's the most fun hunting you can do.  There's gotta be some guys in your area with some hounds that you could tag along with.  Keep your eyes out for dog pens when you're driving around.  Good luck.

Heavy cover and yes rabbits have runways, very similar to deer. Late afternoons are best and sorry the best ways to hunt bunnies is with 100 guys beatin the brush, trust me I have done it with that many guys several times!! Shawn

Do yourself a favor and dont get involved with bow hunting rabbits. It will infect you and haunt your dreams. Its  an addiction that you will never shake and will always leave you wanting more, trust me. People at work will ask you about your foolish grin and lack of productivity and all you'll be able to say is "I Was Bowhunting Rabbits This Past Weekend."

My favorite place for hunting them is around a beaver pond with brushy banks separating the pond from open woods. Easiest with a partner. When you jump one they stay in the brush around the edge, and one of you can circle around and intercept them. Big swamp rabbits, canecutters!
