Title: Kentucky Hunters...Hot, Hot, Hot!!!!
Post by: jlnft on September 02, 2011, 09:11:00 PM
For the first time in more years than I can remember I'm not going out on opening day  :(

To put it bluntly, it's just to hot! It's supposed to be 98 degrees here tomorrow. The good news is Monday, the weatherman is calling for a high of 76. That's more in my line of temperature for this time of year!!

Anybody going to give it a try tomorrow?

Joe

I'm gonna brave the heat....call me crazy, but I've been running cams and have a couple nice bucks pinned down as to where they are entering the beans.  Not gonna pass up the chance as that velvet will be gone w/in days.
Hope to be posting pics of one of the 2 big 10's if I'm lucky.  Only good thing about this heat is I can bet on a goos S wind.

Well, I ended up not going, but my brother went and shot a doe at 7:00am. He was out of the woods by 9:00am. He saw 8 bucks, 3 of which are excellent bucks(I have pictures of them on my trailcams) all were within 40 yds of him.

All in all, a great day! I'm kicking myself in the buttocks for not getting my big butt in a stand this morning!!!

Our season doesn't open until October 1, weather should be cooler by then.  It's been 100+ the past two days, 98 today, but only 77 tomorrow and 71 Monday. Gonna be a nice Labor Day, with a break from the heat.

Its going to be bad this afternoon but maybe it will be worth it! Monday will be better hopefully!  I hope it don't change movement that bad. One thing the dry weather has done for us is low acorn numbers and some even dropping early. Maybe the deer wont run to the national park on me! LOL

I had to work today anyway.

Heck, I don't get real excited until later this month and then I start getting really fired up in October. Plus, I don't like to get my best areas stunk up and wore out before it gets good later.

85 here today. Season doesn't open until October here though. Did go do some scouting for a place to hunt that is still accessible today though. The 400,000 acre Green Mountain National Forest is closed because of the damage done by Irene and a lot of places I hunt don't have ways in to them right now.

Well, I'm glad to finally say our really hot weather ended today. This summer in Tyler we shattered every record on the books. All said and done since Memorial Day we had 77 days 100 degrees plus and 27 days 105 degrees plus! No rain since July 4th. Our season starts first weekend in October.I am hoping for cooler weather and some rain.

Just got back. When I left the truck the thermometer was on 100. Wow it was brutal. Deer laying low.

I think I need to put two drain holes in the bottom of my knee high rubber boots.

Was good to be back in the tree.

Good luck all.

Leonard,

That's just NASTY!!

I'm a little over my BMI(Body Mass Index)   :biglaugh:

If I had to hunt in that kind of weather, all you'd find under my tree, is a BIG tub of GOO !!

I haven't even bothered to buy my deer tags yet. The first morning that I stick my head out and feel a fall-like breeze on my face I'll be ready;^)

I braved it yesterday morning and afternoon.  I only saw two little bucks and a gray fox.

I've never sweated on stand like I did yesterday afternoon.  I only wore shorts with leafy wear over top.

Thermacell is the best thing for early hunting!!!

I shoulda been bowfishing instead, but I've never missed hunting opening day since I started bowhunting 31 years ago.

Shazzam was that brutal!  Had 2 dink bucks and 4 does/3 fawns all within shooting distance.  They all came rt thru the hole in the fence located 15 yards S of my stand to enter the beans.

Had a great buck that I have pics of come over the fence about 40 yds from my stand and proceed to feed away from me.  Up till last night I hadn't thought about shooting this buck, but he looked much bigger in person than in photos LOL!

The buck on the left in the photo.

Note to self:  When it's 100 deg do not place your stand in a tree that has ants.  OMG...I bet I was bit no less than 100 time last night.  The back of my neck taking 90 percet of them.

Man this thread gets me pumped.  We open first of October.  I could hunt the early Tennessee opener because I am so close and have some land there, but it sneeks up on me so fast, I am never prepared until October.

TJ, what bow made the hunting stick this year?

Tom, I took my new Black Canyon. Shooting it really well. Great bow.

Lowebow - Great photo brother. Don't even think of shooting that deer. Hold out for the biggun.

Hunted 6:45 to 10:30 a.m. Sat.
A parade of turkeys until 9:30, a cottontail. a raccoon. Two coyotes were stocking the flock. One gave me a 20 yard broadside, I let an arrow fly. I thought I had a 10X on him/her but it did a quick "180" when the arrow was about a foot away from contact! What reflexes!
No deer.

Had fun anyhow

Happy hunting guys.

October 1st is the opener for regular archery season here in Michigan. Our deer aren`t "ripe" yet, as they are ALL still wearing the summer "red".

I can remember some very warm days in early October, but by "warm" I mean mid-eighties, and found even those temps to be tough hunting.

Cool temps are a promise from ma-nature so be patient guys.   :campfire:

Hey Mike..... What a great photo and that's from a trail cam????   Crop a bit a the bottom and that's a wall hanger!  It would be nice to take the buck and hang that photo under him on the wall.   Good luck to you and your hunting partner TJ.

I went opening morning. It was 72 degrees at 5:30am. I didnt see any deer by 9:05AM and called it a morning.

Just 3 days before the season opened the temperature at 6am where I live was 53 degrees. Last year on opening morning it was in the 40's.

Mosquitos don't bother my spot (too high and dry. I did get a couple no-seeums pestering me. My son saw two yotes and 2 deer.

My wife had a 10-point stop in front of her vehicle coming up the drive yesterday during the rain. She had to stop to keep from hitting him. She had the GREAT sense to count points for her report.  Of course the locals would have called him another 15-pointer.

In case you are wondering. The average high for October in KY is 67 and September is 78. The average lows are 46 in Oct. and 58 in September.

Forecast was for 100 degrees in Northern KY.  Hunted till 9:00 am over the pond and saw 6 does and 2 bucks.  The bucks were within range.  A compact 8 pointer I watched a lot last year and a bigger 6 point.  Didn't want to fill my buck tag yet.  I'll be patient and hopefully something a little bigger will present an opportunity.  One things for certain, droughts and hot weather really makes the pond a popular place.
