Title: You all are missing the boat...(KME)
Post by: Mike Vines on September 01, 2011, 09:47:00 AM
...If you have never tried the KME knife sharpened.  I have been reading all the reviews and recommendations, and finally figured I just had to see what all the hype is about. I bought it almost a month ago, and finally got it out last night to try on my broadheads that are mounted to my arrows.

Using the course diamond stone, I was able to establish a 25* angle that was sharper than anything I have ever been able to do with every other knife/broadhead sharpener I have ever tried.

I'm going to try progressively finer stones tonight to see just how scary I can get them.

Now I will say that it was not a quick job getting the initial  bevel on them, but they are exact.  Each one took me about 7 minutes.  But for less than 50 minutes I have 7 Ace Standards that impress the heck out of me.

Best $100 bucks I ever spent.  I opted for the diamond stones, because I know how I like to drop things and the natural stones would probably break.  And then I would have to order the diamond ones anyway, so I just went ahead and got what I really wanted anyway.

I do like how the knife sharpener is able to sharpen both knives and broadheads.  Where as the broadhead sharpener is, in my opinion, only good for one thing...sharpening broadheads.  I bought the knife sharpener.

The way I look at a purchase is that it has to serve atleast 3
purposes for me to consider buying it.

The KME knife sharpener, does 3 for me.  It sharpens my hunting knives (1), it sharpens my 2 blade broadheads (2) and most importantly, it keeps my wife happy by having sharp kitchen knives (3), and now that I think of it there is a 4th one.  It is small enough to stay in my truck just incase a buddy needs a demonstration on how food it works.

Not a mistake Sparty... As I just posted you'll be done sharpening your BHS and be kicked back reading threads on the PowWow long before anyone using the knife sharpener.

I have both the broadhead and knife sharpener and I'm happy with both. Started with the knife sharpener and then bought the broadhead sharpener. There is definitely a place for both.
As for the diamond stones, I havn't gone that route yet. Havn't seen the need to take off that much metal.

They are great for establishing the correct angle you want your cutting edge to be.  I'm sure the natural stones do an awesome job of "polishing" the blade to an unbelievably sharp edge, atleast natural stones do that to my chisel blades.  I'm sure once I feel confident in my abilities with the knife sharpener (which will not take long at all) I will pick up some natural stones, but for now I'm happy being amazed at me actually being able to sharpen something and be proud to say I did it.

"Oh yea one other thing- If you think your BHDs and knives are sharp now, you gotta try the standard stones. Diamonds will take a blade from dead blunt to very sharp in a hurry but, you'll never achieve that "Holy smokes"! level of sharpness using only diamond stones."

Hmmm, sounds like a marketing opportunity in there.  How about a set with a diamond course stone with medium to fine standard stones?  Yeah, I'm just too cheap to order the standard set plus $12 for the diamond course ;-)

Got one about a month ago from a fellow TGer and absolutely love it.  I should have bought one of these a long time ago.

I got both kits and am really happy too. Better than the other (whatever the name is) I had. Love the edges I get.

No marketing ploy. Ask anyone who knows me. I do my best to talk guys out of buying diamond stones 'cause I think they're too expensive and over-rated. If you keep your blades even remotely sharp, then low cost ceramics and Arkansas stones are all you should need to bring the edges back to scary.  I do recommend a coarse or extra coarse diamond when a knife is  very dull  and needs a bit of stock removal though. Diamonds can be time savers but a knife has to be in very bad shape for me to use a diamond on it.

If you really want to get scary with the KME then do your best and then switch to pulling backwards on #800 then #1200 to #1600 and finally #2000 grit wet or dry sand paper. Lay the edge down next to a some fine print and read it off the blade.

Mike,

I knew you would be impressed.

I will bring you a couple stones tomorrow, but I have GOT to have them back after the weekend.  Got some sharpening to do myself next week.

I got lucky and won a KEM on a past St Judes Auction. My plan was when it arrived i was going to throw a little bussines Ron's way and order the optional base (was not inclueded in the auction item)thought it was the least i could do because of Ron's donation to the kids. Well when it arrived guess what he generously included the base in the package. Top notch guy if you ask me.

One of the best tools i have in my archery tackle box.

Just a "Don't do what I did" warning. Years ago I got a Lansky sharpening system for knives. At the time, my knives were mostly ATS-34 and had not had the initial edge done yet. Being in a hurry, I leaned into that medium diamond stone and promptly took all the diamonds off. Ruined a second one a few years later. LIGHT pressure on the diamond stones. They will cut just as fast and will last 100 times longer.

Mike:
Please don't interpret my comment about the diamond stones to be a knock at you. I've just found that I can do an outstanding job on my knives and broadheads without spending the extra cash for the diamond stones. In fact, I'm one of the guys who Ron told it was not necessary to buy the diamond stones. I can sharpen most anything I need without the KME and have for years. I just find the KME to be faster and much better for the individual who just can't get his broadheads and knives sharp enough to shave hair. For sure, they are out there. Mike, congrats on your success with the KME  and "Keep'Um Sharp".

Hey Mike:  Some of us got on that boat a long time ago. I have both and both sets of stones. A little pricy, but worth every penny and then some.  If you have never tried this system, you have no idea how sharp ( Scary Sharp ) really is.  Great product...RW

Steve O. Just dropped of his "polishing" stones for me to try this weekend.  I'm hoping to report back how great they work, not how bad I cut myself.

I should have listened to you guys a long time ago, and just went out and bought one instead of waiting so long.

I finsh my BH's off with a 600/1200 waterstone then cardboard. Works great once the angle and medium work is done. Mirrored finish as seen above.
