Was a thread on another forum about a deer being hit with light arrow (7gpp) out of a recurve and got me to thinking with the discussion on heavy arrows. some think they loose too much speed and trajectory so I thought I would do a little chrono work in the 100 degree heat just to see for myself! I used a 525gr and a 656 gr arrow to show that you wouldnt loose 20+ fps by going up 125gr in weight but would gain momentum and penetration not to mention a much quieter bow. I avg 3 shots per arrow per bow, for entertainment purposes only!! :D

Cool info- thanks. I especially like the fact that you consider momentum and not energy. Penetration is the name of the game for arrows and tissue damage for bullets.

I see a whole lot of variety in gpp's here.. heighest is 15.6 gpp with 138 fps,lowest 8,6 with 172 fps.
I like to shoot around the 10 gpp. that gives me the best of two worlds. Enough speed and enough stability.
The 10 gpp guideline means little to me when it comes to penetration. A 400 gn normally designed arrow out of 40# bow could quite possibly be a weak set-up if anything is encountered other than soft tissue for deer sized game and up. A 60 # bow shooting a 9 gpp(540 gn) arrow will deliver substantially more than the 42#... 10 gpp set-up. Even at 8 gpp(480 gn), the 60# set-up will deliver much more.
The concerns and debates over what is the best the gpp range will continue. The best we can hope for is to provide enough factual data in order for the trad hunter, himself, to perform his own testing and thus provide himself evidence in order to develop a set-up which fulfills his needs and especially provide ample lethality for the game pursued. The animals we hunt both deserve and warrant our best efforts.
One variation in arrow speed we noticed a while back when playing with a chrono. One fellow consistently got lower speeds with a fast recurve than he did with his slower Hill style longbow of the same weight. When another shooter tried his bows the recurve was faster than the longbow. The other odd one was how little the longbow changed when going to my Alaskan carbons, which were much heavier than his cedars. The difference was in how he shot. With the high powered takedown he shot with a straight arm, goose necked and had a dead release. With the longbow he shot with a bent bow arm,squared shoulders and a stronger release without the goose necking and achieved the same draw length. with the heavier arrow, his form had a steadier follow through, which seemed to help the bow do its job. When he tried to correct his form with recurve, it felt wrong and messed up his release even more. His answer,"now I understand why I get pass throughs with this old longbow you gave me. It's not the bow, it's me."
i usually shot 10-11 gpp, i did this little test just to see on average through several different bows in style and weight how much velocity would be lost by going up 131gr in arrow weight and it averaged 10fps overall with no real big lose of velocity from any of the bows over another. i was focused on the veloctiy loss and not gpp while doing this.
I'm no math major, but I think the average was 13 fps.
I have 3 bows that I can hunt with.I've checked the poundage 47 long bow 53 recurve and 55 recurve.I use 500 and 600 carbons with 125 grain MAGNUS 2 BLADE BROADHEADS THE ARROWS WEIGHT IS 500 378grains 600 367 grains.Is this enought for deer and hogs.I checked the weight with a powder scale, I RELOAD AMMUNITION.ROOKIE TO BOW HUNT'N

yes it is, i just noticed that, but when i added them all up and divided by 7 on each arrow it came out to 10 for some reason, may have been the calculator.LOL!! me and math dont do well either.

thats only a 6.8 gpp on the 55lb bow with 378gr arrow. you really need to add some weight at that draw weight for sure!! That is really hard on a bow and could split the tips or limbs.(been there and done that myself!!) I would want at least a 500gr arrow out of the 55lb bow as well as the 53 and would be a good weight for a 47 as well.

But, I'm still in agreement with those who are saying how much better a slightly heavy arrow is over a super light arrow.
