Are any of you blokes having difficulty getting your arrows to fly straight?
Stay safe, fellows, and all the best to you and your families, communities and properties.
Hope everyone gets through this safely.
It seems like that is a common problem for me latley. But I will get over it soon. I hope.
You East Coaster's chime in. Waiting to hear from Stringstretcher in Virginia. Hell of a week for him with the earthquake as well.
Yep, we had an earthquake a few days ago, and now a hurricane. All is well here in central Va, just a lot of wind and a little rain.
Allen....just heard from Charlie and he says the same thing....even has power like you....lol.
Ben, I live on the North East coast of Virginia. As a die hard archer I just had to 'shoot and arrow into a hurricane"... As usual, the wife looked outside in horror as I was standing in the back yard, wind howling and the rain coming down sideways, bow in hand with arrow knocked. I took a few shots at 30 yards and was surprised to see the arrows didn't move that far off their mark! Wife threatened to call the authorities and have me committed to a mental institution if I didn't come back inside so that's all I could shoot before hanging up the bow.
If I could have gotten outside fast enough a few days ago, I would have shot a few arrows during the earthquake too... Yeah, I am just not right sometimes.
Seriously, we are fortunate here. We didn't lose power and the trees around our home held up to the high winds and saturated soil. Some of my fellow Virginians were not so fortunate. 100,000 without power last I heard, a few deaths from trees falling onto homes, lots of flooding. Prayers going out to those families. Steve
Hey, all you East Coasters'. Send some of Irene's rain down Texas way. Yesterday's high temperature at my house was 108 degrees.
We had a shoot at our club yesterday to raise money for families of law enforcement's fallen.
Got done as the rain started in earnest, then shot some running buck... that is NOT a shot I will attempt on game!
We lost power last night, but it just came on about twenty minutes ago. Not Bad! Now, what to do with all this ice... :dunno:
Ah, the two growlers I filled Friday will go nicely in the coolers. :D

We had no monopoly on earthquakes, either. Colorado had a 5.2, among many others, West Virginia had a minor one, and has anybody looked at the USGS map of all the quakes in Alaska?
Structural damage on many monuments, the National Cathedral and the Treasury building, these are troublesome but we got off lucky.
Killdeer :archer:
just waiting to ,ose power here, winds are crazy and i'm watching trees and brances snap in the back yard, nothing in striking distance of the house so i'm enjoying the show, the dogs not so much!!!!
Ken did you get those stands cleared and moved you were talking about in another thread? Hopefully not or you would be going back to redo right.
nope in fact i'm waiting untill next week now to see whats going on.
Glad everyone is doing okay so far.
Night Wing be very careful what you wish for! You may get it yet, the hurricane season is still very young and I bet those Gulf waters are mighty warm this year! Hope you just get the water you need, not exceeed.

Our weather forecasters say the high pressure ridge that's been sitting on top of us since the start of June is too strong to let a hurricane hit us where I live near the upper Texas coast.
Once a tropical storm or hurricane gets into the Gufl of Mexico, if it manages to get into the Gulf of Mexico, the high pressure ridge will divert it due west where it will impact Mexico or it will divert it northeast where the state of Florida will get hit.
To make matters worse, yesterday's high temperature was 108 degrees where I live and today's high is forecasted to be 109 degrees.
Right now in Texas, we'd take some cloud cover from some far away storm to get some relief from these wicked high temperatures.
Wasn't too bad down here, wind got up pretty good through the night. Expected to see lots of trees down but I looked up and down the street and luckily only some sizable limbs ( I wonder if any are good for the bow makers ) at any rate, besides the flooding I am hearing about, we came out O.K.
Only bad part is I have to go into work to make a showing, even though everything is shut down, it should make for an interesting drive.
I don't know how in the world you guys can stand the heat down there! I'd die. I used to go to Texas to play baseball years ago and thought anybody living in that heat was nuts. Heck we complain up here if it goes past 85. Heck it's about 75 outside right now and I got the air conditioner cranking. I do have an insulation layer though. But when it's 20 out I'm in heaven!
Hope you get the rain you need!
Glenn
Lost power from around 3 AM till 11 AM, a little water in the garage but nothig too bad. There's a very small creek that flows by my house... that sounds like the Colorado river rapids right now. I put a spackle bucket on the deck when it started raining, looks like about 7" in there now.
Ron
Coobait,
i'm with you man, i HATE the heat!!! 40's are great!
Ken 40 sounds AWESOME! Bucks like it to!
Glenn
Predictions say once the rivers crest up here it will be worse than the 1984 Hurricane. :knothead: Thank God we never bought in the flood plan. :archer:
I heard recently that what was taken as an Earthquake in the DC area was actually our Founding Fathers Turning Over In Their Graves.
I hope all of you got thru the Huricane Safely.
I've been glued to the TV, watching CNN and Fox news and praying for you. :wavey:
Mostly just wind here. Did get some rain, but not as much as predicted. Wind is still howling and is supposed to last till 8pm-ish. I'm approximately 1/2 mile from the ocean (southwest corner of Narragansett Bay). I went out at 8am for the paper- lots of leaves and limbs down and a few trees. We still have power, but 180,000 in RI and 200,000 in MA do not have power. I would say that my family and I lucked out.
Butch L
Magnus wrote that Charlie (AKA Stringstretcher) is doing ok and mostly rain and wind.
Bernie kept us all informed PM that he's ok...lost trees and limbs, but the ladder stood! :)
Annapolis buddy told me they were outa power..waiting on it to return. His relatives up New ENgland were getting hammered, some power outages. :(
Calm but getting very dark again here. We had hellacious wind and torrential rain nearby...blew my gas grill over! didn't expect that, but no serious damage locally I know about.
Tween rain and wind, arrows would fly worth a tinker's drat! :)
Lost power about 1am. My own tree took out the neighborhood. Embarrassing as I have a side business as an arborist...
But I did hit the range about 10 something. Killdeer didn't make it, but then again I was an 2 hrs late... Funny, the big wind gusts did make a difference. Especially when I decided to try my luck on the 80yd targets. I did come home short an arrow....
I had a tense night on the boat, lying in a sopping wet bunk, deafening sound of rain pounding the coach-house, and checking the bilge every hour or so. Haven't slept in 36 hours between all the prepping and then the storm.
The Eye was right on top of us at the peak high tide. I had just over 1 foot of piling left til my transom came loose at the peak. It was a close thing for sure. The water was so high that the ramps down to the docks were under water.
I couldn't shoot any arrows though. I took all my bows and valuable archery gear to my storage unit before the storm. Losing the boat would be tough, losing my bows at the same time would have been devastating!
Thank God it wasn't worse, and Prayers for the folks that died or had property damage. I just heard that 18 so far have died, some from electrocution.
Danny glad you made it,sounds like you had one insane night.
Hope all of you NJ boys didn't have too much damage and stayed safe. When I was there I lived 2 blocks from the beach, and would have had serious problems with this storm.
My arrows were squirrely Thurday and Friday but all is well.
Dave, I was there yesterday for the charity shoot.
This morning was for a book and coffee on the balcony, with a curtain of fine rain for a peaceful backdrop.
Playing Slip-n-Slide on a muddy, steep 3D course was not in the cards. :nono:

We lost power at 6:35p.m. last night and got it back Thanks to the linemen at 2:40 p.m this afternoon...We were "Very Blessed" we didn't get the flooding cause I can shoot an arrow to the creek from my backyard...Our benchmark is either 13 or 23 Feet above highest tide...I can't remember but I sat in the reliner cause we had a few Tornado's very near our area..One in the next town but I don't think it actually touched the ground...Too dark to tell but with that I stayed up checking the yard every hour or two to see if water was lapping against the house...This afternoon I actaully watched the back end of Irene leave and blue skys directly behind it..We stood directly under the line as it left our yard and let the sunshine come upon our faces..Our little daughter Kaci waved buy buy to her..That storm reminded me of some scary old lady I once knew that scared the heck out of me when she came into our home but was very gentle as she left...The winds were very strong with little brances scattered everywhere but nothing that can't be cleaned up in a few hours...We got somewhere from 8 to 12 ' rain fall from the storm ...I thank the News broadcasters and our linemen for a job well done in forwarning us and keeping us up to date on the movement of this storm But most importantly I thank God for answered prayer...God Bless All, Keefer's <>< :wavey:
I'd like to Thank all you folks that expressed concern and Prayers, in the Forum and thru PM's. This group is the best!
My own Boss, who I bleed for, hasn't even bothered to call, and only one co-worker. Says all I need to know about people.
All is well in south Jersey( Atlantic County ). more wood flew from trees than my bow could shoot, some of the tourist towns that dont put the money into preserving and replacing the street drainage got to watch the ocean and the bay come together for a night of water passion. But as with every storm that threatens the shore, more people will sit it out at home when the next one comes ( which will probably be worst) and then things will be bad. I give thanks to all the Emergency Managment along with Police, Fire, And EMS people who stayed to help evacuate people and keep a protective blanket over us all. Tim
Yep, Had to get out and shoot yesterday as Irene hit our coast. Thankfully we only have 20mph wind with gust up to 35mph here at home. Prayers sent out to those with much harsher conditions.
I've never shot better than I have today during Irene's visit to NJ.
:archer2:
We were fortunate here. The storm really kicked into high gear around 4am. At 4:10 the wind managed to break the original 100 year old latches on our front porch windows making them swing wide open. Thankfully I was able to get them secured quickly with the help of my son and Mom without having one single pane break. Has anyone ever tried waking up a 14 year old boy at 4am for an emergency? Holy cow! Talk about slow! I had to yell at him to move his butt.
Other than that we suffered no other damage and only got about a gallon of water into the basement. Oh we also only lost power for 3 minutes. I'm glad we prepped prior to this storm.
Tomorrow after I clean up the yard I'll be back to shooting!
Tomorrow I'll get to my storage unit and grab a bow and a few arrows so I can get back to practice. Seasons right around the corner. I feel lost without a bow within reach.
I have thousands and thousands in damage!! Trees still coming down, lost my pool, my deck and quite a few trees and we still have gusts up to 70-80mph as I type this!! Bad!! Shawn
It'll be fine after we get through the locusts next week ;-)
Shawn find somewhere safe and hunker down,it cant last forever.
I was lucky in my part of Delaware. Only had a few limbs/tops come down. Kind of windy and about 9" of rain. Being a Florida cracker born and raised, I've seen a lot worse!!!
Anybody get any pm's from Shawn about how he and his family are doing or if they need anything ?
We got a lot of rain, not much wind and made the most of it! This is usually a trickle that runs between my house and my neighbors.
Got to test out my KUIU Chugach rain gear...

Curt, you look like you don't like rain.
Killdeer :biglaugh:
Oh I see how things are! Curt runs around in his fancy rain gear and his poor daughter doesn't even have pants! PRIORITIES man, PRIORITIES! LOL I shouldn't say anything I have some great hunting boots and my kids run around bare foot.

I personally got hit with and felt an earthquake a hurricane and a tornado. Three major firsts for me.
I had a tornado die probably 200 yards from my business this summer that tore up our town pretty bad. The earthquake would have had to tip over the building for us to feel it. And while the hurricane came up the coast we probably had the nicest weather all summer. My sisters home used to get about 6 foot of water when it flooded and what a horrible mess flood water is. I sure feel bad for those poor folks that have to clean up after it!
