Title: Taper jig plans...Ideas?
Post by: Al Kidner on August 27, 2011, 05:17:00 PM
Hi all,

Does anyone have a link or plans on how to make a taper jig for putting on a 10" taper on timber shafts?

I am wanting to make one for a sanding belt or disc and I seen one a while back but I can't seem to find it now...

Cheers,

ak.

Have you checked the How To-Resources part of this site?

A friend of mine made one from instructions on here and it works great.

I found it on page 2 in How To-Resources.

Sorry, I don't know how to add the link here.

Thanks mate... I found that one too, but I seen one that was built using a sanding wheel or belt.

Al... I thought this one up a while back. At first I was gonna use a wing nut set up to make it adjustable but settled on just cutting 10" tapers.
I cut the nock taper first, then turn the shaft into the jig by hand.

That's an 80 grit belt Al. Does real well and I hand sand afterwards anyway.
I doubt you'd gain much by going finer than 150-180 grit. I've used both.

By the way. The shaft rides on a narrow shelf that can't be seen in the photo. I've been tapering a lot of shafts lately.
The shaft does tend to ride up out of the channel. I'm thinking about gluing a piece that goes over the top to fix that.

If the shaft isn't round to start, it will be when finished... I usually regrind the nock taper to make sure it's even.

I've got two pins in the jig that fit into holes in my bench setup to keep it steady.

The CD by Connie and Gary Renfro (Making the Footed Arrow) shows several ways, including how to make a jig, as well as a whole lot more ideas.  I really think the video is great and worth every penny.

Al. .   well. . . there you are !

Its a down home video made to share their knowledge.  You can almost feel Gary vibrating with the excitement of getting to share his well thought out ideas.  And of course. . Connie is in it. . .  sorry Gary, but she sure is cuter than you.  :p

Please show pix of your new tapered arrows Al.
