Title: longbow noise
Post by: targets3D on August 26, 2011, 03:31:00 AM
I recently started shooting longbow (from ILF recurve) and was wondering if mine is noisy. It's a radical r/d (grey-actionwood) with astro-flight string and regular string silencers. I don't feel there is any vibration when I shoot or noise coming from the string. Just a "tunk" sound coming from the wood when the arrow releases. I watched some videos of longbows MBB and all I heard was swishh sound.

Any thoughts?

Check your limb bolts and/or your brace height may need adjusting.

Do you shoot three under? It is generally louder than split.

Normal. Nature of the speed beast. That frequency was probably too low for the mic. to record, leaving only the initial string swoosh in the vids. Brace height, enough arrow weight, nock fit, etc..etc.. Dacron will dampen that noise AND lower the freq. With a rad r/d you can afford to give back a little, fps, probably won't miss much, or will you...

The sound of the bow (to me) seem to be louder when shooting the bow compared to when you listen to someone else shoot it.
So as a bystander they most always appear quiter.

One of the causes of noise from a bow is a light arrow... the energy produced has to go somewhere and if not into the arrow then into the bow in the form of vibration and noise..

One way to check to see if its at its quietest is take off the silencers and re-determine its sweet spot. Also contact Josh (oliverstacy)and ask him about his 450+ strings.
It sounds normal for your bow but you may get it quieter.

Josh makes an excellent string that is quiet on most any bow.

Thank you all for the great insights. I think a given the speed and possible light arrow (although correct spined based on bareshaft tuning)might be the culprit. I will try to record sound to the test the "frequency" theory
