Title: mountain lion
Post by: neuse on August 28, 2009, 03:26:00 PM
Where and how would a person start searching for a guided cat hunt, which state would be the best?

Idaho has some good cats and guides but so does most of the other western states. Good luck.

You might want to give Lloyd Nielson of Blanding ,Utah a call.(435-678-2838) I hunted with him last December and had a great hunt.I got my Lion on the last day of my hunt. You can also go to the other popular bow hunting site and check out the Mt. Lion forum. That's how I first heard about Lloyd. If you would like you can pm me for more info....Later...Greg

Don Schaufler out of Ennis Montana.  Shoot me a pm and if you are interested and I can get you his contact info.  He will only take mature toms and he will hunt as long as need be or as long as the weather is good for tracking.  No 5 day hunt and leave stuff.

Thought I get you psyched a bit! Before leaving South Tucson for TN. I shot this desert mountain cat. Turned out to be one of the oldest desert lions ever shot with a bow. AZ state game officials aged him at 12 1/2. Hunted with Layne Brandt and Ray McGee. Unfortunately, Layne died last year in an airplane crash but Ray may still be outfitting. The deal was you hunt until you shoot a cat. Cost was very reasonable. If you're  intersted, I may be able to get you a number.   (http://i530.photobucket.com/albums/dd342/EVANSON/MyMounts003.jpg)

Maybe try asking the wildlife biologists in the various game departments who issue lion tags; I'm sure they'd give you some good information and reasons why they allow a certain number to be killed each year.

Why?
Mmmmm...smoked lion hams, loins, steaks.
Cougar. The "other" white meat.

Shakeyslim... No natural predators except man. They also have a significant negative impact on the whitetail and mule deer population. Playing a part in controlling the population and the incredible rush of the hunt is one reason, the smoked loins, I have to admit was also an incentive!

I have a friend with hounds that I've gone out with several times.  He's been doing it as his hobby for quite some time now and has connections in Utah, Arizona, and here in Idaho.  Sounds like some of the other guys have given some good options-if you want any others, I can ask my buddy and send that info your way.  Good luck and happy hunting.

Hap blackstone can help you out in northern NM. Also, you might want to look at options in west texas or southern NM - typically smaller cats than northern ones, but you could have the advantage of a call-up, shorter travel, and no additional license. ALot of the west texas hunts are depredation hunts, so once a kill is located you head west. About the only way to do it out there as the cats are more spread out.

Here's a few stats to think about in choosing a state. First choose snow hunt or bare ground. Bare ground will narrow your search a lot with outfitters and and will be a little tougher hunt in some ways ( not always as winter is a tough time to hunt)

I have a few numbers from as late as 2008 on sport harvest.
Idaho leads with 441 lions, they hit a all time high in 1997 of 797. They are followed by Montana with over 300. CO.and UT are pretty close with 295 and 274.

The dry ground state of AZ. stands at close to 250.
WY. and NM. are just over 200 cats.
Nevada finishes the legal dog states with 146.

Or. has tags available for lions but no dogs allowed, 2007 harvest was 308

Most of the western states harvest numbers are going down. Most likely due to prey numbers being down. (deer)Also Idaho, MT, WY, are being impacted by wolves. Tough to run hounds with these duds in the area.

These figures are from a research book our dept. loaned me. The new bible on lion ecology & management.

Hope this helps. RS

A lion is the ultimate choice for a hunter in my opinion. They are the best eating wild game I've tasted by far.

I get to spend 3 or 4 month's every winter hunting the big cats. I consider myself a true student of these cats and have only scratched the surface of what they can teach. When one of the big cats look you in the eye you feel like it just looked into your soul.

Every traditional archer could do no worse than to learn how these cats hunt. They are the masters of spot & stalk hunting.

Doubt there are too many guides that hunt cats without dogs, though if you ask, some may work with you.  Without dogs, your options are either cut a track and try to walk it down or call one in.  Both have quite low success rates, but can be done.

Why hunt mountain lions!!??? Lets see, they are there, it;s legal, they are absolutely at the top of the food chain ,they are not omnivorous they are carnivores , it is as tough a hunt as you can get and they are absolutely great to eat!

Pat, you hunt mountain lions with dogs because without a dog to tree 'em, you'll never catch them! And even with hunting dogs, you are going to be wore out running up and down some of the steepest, nastiest country you could ever imagine.

I'm from the Reno,NV area and we have the big cats around here.  Two killed in my area within the last three years.  The last was a young tom that was waaay to curious for his own good.  He would even sit in a cottonwood tree, scratching and peeing on it that was right outside my garage.  He met his demise when he jumped on two of my neighbors dogs down at a park on the Carson River and the neighbor shot him.  This cougar put a pretty good laceration on my Doberman cross one night when I turned her loose on him.  These big cats are very quick and cover a lot of ground fast.

Quite a few cats around my area.  They have lots of 'em in California that drift over into Nevada. I've never actually gone on a guided hunt and don't know any outfitters, but don't count Nevada out as there's plenty of cats here.

None taken. But as a freind told me this year while we were listening to hounds run rabbits "either you get it or it can't be explained to you!"

I guess there are those of us who are just blessed enough to LOVE the sound of a bawling hound!!!

I have quite a few customers that eat lions. For those that do,it is important to know that lions get trichinosis, just like pigs and bears so it is important to cook it well.It should also be pointed out that lion harvest quotas are very well controlled in almost every state that allows hunting. Here, lion harvest quotas change each season based on current conditions, last years harvest, age structure etc..Quotas are further broken down by male and female.

Thought I'd throw in a fresh picture.

Lions don't do the damage to deer and elk populations that wolves do because they are solitary hunters but they do impact the populations.  Large Toms do (so I'm told by experienced houndsmen) sometimes select mature mule deer bucks to kill seemingly for the sport as does and fawns are readily available and easier prey.  As previously stated, they have no other natural predators (I do consider myself a natural predator), so their populations go virtually unchecked but for age and disease.  Also as noted above lion flesh is freakin delicious.  It ranks in my top three north american game meats with Elk and Mt. Goat.  Finally, the chase for cats, after dogs is one of the most demanding hunts I have ever been on (on a par with Mt. Goat).  Following dogs on foot that are on a hot track, through the brush and canyons at 1,000,000 mph (okay maybe not but it's a hectic pace to say the least) tore my body and my gear to shreds.  It took two full winters before I got a chance at a cat I was satisfied with.  I relished every second of it.

Been on my list for years as well. Don't know if I will ever be able to since heart surgery.

I have seen two in the wild. One in TX while hog hunting and one in NM while bear hunting. I can tell you it's the only animal in the wild that has ever gave me the willies..

Cougar meat is some of the best eating there is! Also helps control the deer and elk predation. They are having a huge impact here in Oregon because the numbers of cats are so high since the ban on hunting with dogs.
I have pics of many animals from my trail cams, with scars and claw marks down there sides and one two with major bite marks.
Hunting Cougars is Good for many reasons.
