Got a text sometime during the dark, that Bjorn got an elk Saturday evening, either a cow or spike, no details in the text, and Adam was sitting in the stand without an arrow knocked and had a smallish 5 point come in.
Will post more if I hear anything else.....................
:campfire:
So, Adam, how big was that elk that you saw?

This was the picture from the PBS Youth Hunt.
Just talked to Rich, (Firstarrow) and Bjorn got a nice cow elk.
  i can't wait to "hear" the story! Congratulations Bjorn!
Adam is growing up fast !
Saturday was the opener for the Utah bowhunt. To say it was magical may be stretching it (remember it was day 1). Day one of the PBS youth leadership hunt was cool, by day 7 it may have been among the best'est' most magical'est' of hunts many / most of us had ever experienced. Roughly 30 local guys gave up their best honey holes to allow the 10 youth to rotate through and hunt. Every hunt mentor without exception said they would do it all over again. With out sharing too many details two kids tagged out, several others took shots. All had shot opportunities during the week, and as I remember every one saw elk daily.
Craig and Bjorn had been talking
Life just happened I will try to be back...
Will be waiting for this story.
Congrads, can't wait for pics and the story!

We first hunted Cache Valley UT 2 years ago with the PBS Youth Hunt; if you have a young son or daughter, or niece or nephew, sister or brother, teen age neighbor-you get the idea-join the PBS and find out about the Youth Hunt. Adam loved it and I did too.
Here we are a few miles from camp
(http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q291/bjornweb/photo-4-2.jpg)
A beautiful mixture of forests, mountains, waterholes-just the kind of place you would pick if you were an Elk or hunter.
On the evening of the UT archery opener I was sitting in a ground blind overlooking some mud and a bit of water when in the woods above me I heard a group of animals coming in fast. I stepped out to get behind a bush and into a better position with an arrow nocked. Three cows appeared, two of them ran about and the third one stopped right on the other side of the bush which was my cover and literally about eight feet away................I came to full draw and shot her through the light bush. My arrow sunk deep into the lower part of her exposed chest just behind the front leg, and they were gone! A second later there was a huge crash in the thick woods nearby and I knew she was down!
She ran about 25 yards, the arrow went right through her heart.
Congrats Bjorn, you are going to be eating good for a long time. Nice elk
 :clapper:
Adam hunted on a waterhole about a mile into the brush that had been scouted out prior to our arrival by Craig Burris who has hunted Cache Valley for 30 years and was a guide on the PBS Youth Hunt.
The water was visited by Elk-cows and bulls daily as well as moose and deer coming in for a drink, or just to tease and entertain hunters regularly.
Adam was fortunate enough to draw a Bull tag for this hunt, so shooting a cow was not an option and he was prepared to wait for the perfect shot opportunity when his bull came in.
WAY TO GO!
Congrats to both you and Adam, Bjorn!
That is some *fine* dining right there!
Enjoy!
Shoot straight, Shinken
:archer2:
So now we come to the climax of our Utah hunt! It is Tuesday, day four and Adam has been in his stand daily from 5 AM till ten, and 5 PM till dark admiring animals coming to the water hole and waiting for his bull and his shot opportunity to present themselves, and at about 8 AM a beautiful 5 point comes to water and sinks his nose down for a long drink............he is about 18 yards from 17 year old Adam's stand.............the Hunter comes to full draw as he has done many times before and aims his arrow at a spot just behind the front leg and slightly high to allow for the angle for the elevated stand.
The Elk makes his last run for cover and vanishes into the woods.
The blood trail is excellent-lots everywhere
(http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q291/bjornweb/DSCN1570.jpg)
and blissfully short
A few yards and minutes later we find our prize
(http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q291/bjornweb/DSCN1575.jpg)
Adam and Craig; assignment almost completed
(http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q291/bjornweb/photo-7-1.jpg)
And now the real work begins in earnest. Adam bent over working on his first Elk.
Again, expert help from hunters in camp. Everyone is so willing to help field dress and pack out the animals.
Fortunately I had the opportunity to help other hunters with their Elk too.
Congratulations to the successful hunters and a big round of applause to the mentors  :clapper:

Absolutely right Greg, that kind of effort is hard to describe and infectious too.
On Monday Rich, Mason and I got to blood trail track Jerry Z's cow Elk, Jerry was there too of course.
It took more than two and a half hours and we covered over a thousand yards. Rich led the team to a successful recovery despite the fact that there was about a thimble full of blood spread over the entire distance. We found the Elk and packed her out.
Here is a great pic of Adam and his trophy; that smile does need any words added
(http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q291/bjornweb/DSCN1573.jpg)

Packing out Adam's Elk was a bit of work the trail was covered with deadfall and it was uphill all the way. Fortunately we had great help; here is Adam with the final load, a quarter and the head.

That's awesome guys!
Congratulations! Makes me proud to be a PBS member, seeing Craig and friends continuing the relationships formed during that 2009 PBS Youth Hunt. My son was lucky enough to be one of the 10 youth back then and it was perhaps the best-run hunting experience I have ever seen. As Bjorn said, if you have a young bowhunter in mind who would like to participate, join the PBS and get involved. Here is a useful link....

Bjorn Adam thank you so much for the fun hunt. Being in the tree stand next to Adam and seeing his arrow fly and making a perfect shot. WOW He is such a great kid, (and yes you can hunt in slippers just ask Adam)
Craig
Awesome thanks for sharing. This is exactly the kind of thing that gets your blood going. The camper and trailer is packed and we're heading across country on Saturday.
Going to spend a few days next week visting with my brother in Evergreen, Colorado then heading to camp with my South Dakota buddies on the 9th. Don't hit civilization again until the 16th!
I can't wait.
Wow! What a great elk hunt. We leave on the 10th for Idaho again and hope to have half as much fun.
