Title: Smokeys pre-orbital lure
Post by: Toecutter on August 20, 2011, 03:58:00 PM
I remember hearing about it for the first time on here last year, was just wanting to know how many of those that tried it last year are planning on doing so again.

Thanks,
Nathan

We shot 3 bucks out of the same scrape in one week with Smokey's Preorbital Gland lure last fall. YES, I will be using Smokey's again! We already have it going.

Gene and I get twice as many pictures on trail camera sets when using the pre-orbital as when not. BW

How is it used?

Charlie just get on Smokey's site ( he's a sponsor here ) Smokey's Deer Lure. It will tell you how to use the products. Once the deer start scraping along with the preorbital gland lure I was also using the interdigital gland lure down in the scrape. Bucks were TEARING up these scrapes I was using the interdigital in! I'm guessing that the more dominant bucks were trying to get rid of another bucks oder from the scrape. Some of my scrapes were tore up down to the clay! Really impressive stuff.

Not pre-orbital but bought cover scent from Smokey last year. IMO, he's genuine solid country boy with a big bunch of trapping experience & easy to deal with.

Wish I could say the same, I tried it 5 places  I hunt last year, pre rut and rut, nothing, nadaaa, zip. I usually dont use any scent, used to use Tinks 69, till they went to a plastic bottle, not nearly as good. Code blue products worked much better, when I use them. Several of my buddies tried it, nothing either. I guess I am the odd man out.

Before I ask this question, I want everyone that reads this to know, I am super cheap, lol. So with that being said, how long does 1.25oz last? I will be the first to admit that when it comes to using sent's, I am not the most knowledgable guy to talk to. The only scent that I have ever used that I for 100% worked was a gel type that I just opened the jar in the stand with me and watched a buck walk in from downwind with his nose in the air licking his nose and searching for where the smell came from. You shoulda seen his eyes when he seen where it was coming from, lol. Thanks for any advice guys. Mike

Now that's funny,lol.  :biglaugh:

Good stuff, great pic and buck Fred.  You may be on to something with that extreme back of center weighting, that heavy nock must drive those splinters right into the bloodstream.  Deadly stuff right there   :biglaugh:

Now is the time to start using it along field edges (even when bucks are in velvet), perimeter activity will start soon and scrapes will tend to open up earlier.  Mike

last year was first year using his product...it will not be my last.  ordered the preorbital from him...there was an issue with his computer and he was late getting it out to me so he threw in a bottle of the interdigital free.  I had a mock scrape loaded with both and trail cam on the scrape.....in one week I had 18 different bucks visit the scrape!!! I will be using it exclusively this year! PaLongshank

This year will be the test . And Barry since I changed back to wood arrows years back I've been fortunate to have a collection of blunts . It's not that I'm a good shot I just shoot alot . And Mike that's an older Silvertip that I took out of retirement again , shoots better than myself . Biggest advantage I have found with Smokies lure is that it really seems to calm the deer down , which in turn calms me down . Fred

To answer hardwaymike's question a bottle of the preorbital could easily last you several years. Now if you are running as many cameras as Gene and Barry are you are going to use more. If you are running maybe two cameras a bottle could last you 5 or 6 years?? I just dip the tip of the branch in until it touches the preorbital. I do this on three or four branch tips and you are done. Smokey lives like 10 miles from me. I was trying to talk him into making a short video to explain the procedure some more.

Well, I have started mock scrapes last week.  I put preorbital on the mock licking branches, and interdigital in the mock scrape.  7 days later, the velvet is off, trees are getting rubbed and I have recorded about 10 different bucks, some are shooters.  That is a huge deal it has been so worthless to hunt my land as pressure form others is so high.  I have started a few mock rubs and put some preorbital on them, and also put a very few drops of tarsal gland in the scrapes.  It will be interesting to see what happens next.

Bob.

Seems pretty early for the tarsal. They might paw around a little bit though. That preoritial will draw them all in. Bucks, does and the young ones too.

I am going to try the preorbital this year and need to get started.  I was thinking of ordering the interdigital at the same time.  Would you recommend doe or buck interdigital for use in scrapes/mock scrapes?

I used to use an inderdigital by HS scents... it disappearred from the market.... then liked bowhunters set up.... Then it went wierd....

I am gonna order a bottle for the early season...

I usually like to smell like nuthin... But interdigital seems to work till they get pressured...

bearbowman,

I thought it was early for tarsal as well, but smokey suggested it so i gave it a try.  I will check in a week and see if it screwed anything up.

Bob.

Update... Gene and I checked some set cameras yesterday. We had one set with pre-orbital that had five different bucks on it in one frame. Within 25 yds. we found the first three scrapes of the year and they were already dug deeply into the ground, not just half-hearted scrapes. The buck that did it was a beautiful, very symmetrical 4x4 that would go right at 140" but needs another year ot two. Then last week I cut down a juniper tree that was about 5" in diameter, then dug a 2 ft. hole in the corner of a hidden field. Sunk the tree then poured some cement in to keep it in place. Yesterday afternoon I "rubbed" the mock rub with my saw, then trimmed up two of the overhanging limbs, made a scrape under each limb, put Smokey's pre-orbital on the limbs and a couple drops of buck inter-digital in each scrape. THIS MORNING we checked the camera and had two different bucks already hit the scrapes with a photo of the one doing the overhead branch thing. I'm telling you guys, the stuff works great. By the way... this is NOT a paid endorsement! Best of luck. BW

Fred,
Thanks for the info on the bow. I seen you at Smokey's seminar (Denton Hill). Wanted to introduce myself and get some pointers. Smoke said you are a trapper and know what you speak about.

Is anyone having luck with this stuff on public or pressured land?
Title: Re: Smokeys pre-orbital lure
Post by: Greyfox54 on September 23, 2011, 09:44:00 PM
I hunt only pressured deer on public land and really believe that Smokies helped me tag a nice 10 pointer last year . It has helped me locate and identify several nice bucks already but we have an earn a buck early season where we have to tag a doe first . I don't want to hunt where the bucks are and disturb them by taking a doe so I'm hunting other areas but have been unsuccessful so far . I will have to spend more time locating does next year , I'm almost tempted in tagging a roadkill . Just kidding .

i have had exactly zero luck with smokeys pre-orbital, doe and buck scents.
i got all 3 at ETAR and i have used them all for two yrs now , drag ropes, licking branches, in front of trail cams, ( watch the deer walk right past it )  just doesnt seem to work for me.
i still keep trying though

I got the lowdown (instructions)directly from Smokey, I'm even making fake rub lines...and I do have a buck trying to take over my scrapes.....AND he's added new ones in the area also right around my stand ...which had always been between two rub scrap lines....one along a thicket wall, and the other just off my property....I'm hoping I'm 'luring' them over to me....pardon the pun.

Until this season, I never really used scents for years.....gave up long ago after not seeing any real results.

I'll use the buck/doe drag rag Friday and Sunday.....

Just got some  Pre Orbital in the mail 11-10-2011. Took it to a scrape and put a little on a licking stick and set the camera. Next morning this buck shows up. Camera set for every 10 seconds. No pics of him checking out the scrape. This stuff has my attention. Going to leave the area alone for a couple of days before I go back.

I've had great success with Smokey's products. If your not getting any reaction you may be leaving to much human scent in the area.

Of course there is no way to ensure that they check it out in the day time I guess. At least having them on/not on  camera lets you know you are or aren't in the right area.
