Getting ready for deer season in a couple weeks and I got to thinking. Over the years I have some funny superstitions.
1 If I go a couple outings with out any luck I don't take a knife with me. I think I have gutted more deer with a broad head than a real knife. .
2 if I miss 3 times with a bow I get rid of it (that one is expensive)
3 my lucky hat, don't leave home without it
What's yours ?
Hate to say it, but I've got so many that its embarrassing. Mostly have to do with what I carry (or don't) and where I put it (or don't).
Kinda silly, but I can't help myself  :D
This should be a fun read!
Nathan
Keep my "Buckeye" with me I got from my Grandfather umpteen years ago !!!
My superstition is whether or not I see deer on the drive TO my hunting spot. If I see deer driving to my hunting spot in the morning, i more than likely will see and/or kill a deer that morning.
I am also convinced that a deer can feel me staring at them. So I try not to stare at them too hard.
If I don't remember to pack some non-skid, it's going to be a rough day.
Last year I saw shooting stars three times on my way to my stands in the morning. All the times I shot a deer. I would hate to think I need to see one to get a deer..
I used to have "lucky" hat that I needed to wear. It finally got so dirty that I just had take it out of rotation.
I'm not really superstitious, but I do favor the deer print boxers... :)
Brian
I have always believed that if I(or any hunter) doesn't get off the couch, we'll not get any shots that day...lol
God bless,Mudd

The only thing I can add to the list is.......I always make sure that I put my "left-footed" socks on my left foot and my "right-footed" ones on my right. :saywhat:
Winterhawk1960
If I set up with the wind at my back I seem to be very unlucky.
The best way for me to get a shot at a deer is to fall asleep on the stand. I've lost count of the times I've woke up and looked around to find a deer grazing. Maybe this is not really a superstition; I probably fidgit too much and scare the deer off when I'm awake.
i have a side mount 4 arra quiver . when i get in the stand, settled, and ready to knock one , i never grab an arra from the same spot i grabbed it from in the previous hunt.no reason, just a quirk
gotta have the lucky hat or hats and my camera seems if i dont i seem to never see anything
I won't go unless the nighttime temperature is 50 degrees or below. Early season sucks!
I always carry my lucky knife while bowhunting.

Same here and funny thing is I don't even know were I got the knife from.
I have lucky hats....lucky socks....lucky wool shirts....lucky bows....lucky arrows and for the most part they have not worked!! Now what do I do!!
Bear with me here... I must kiss my bow or rifle while in the stand. I know it's wierd but it's now a habit. (Have to be careful of where I kiss my rifle on those cold days.) Usually if I see a lot of deer on my drive to my spot I don't shoot deer. That hasn't held true very often as of lately. This one is a bit more normal and mostly a regular daily occurance, my boots must be tied equally tight, no exceptions, plus my socks pulled to the same spot on my legs with my longjohns over them not under.
*Recently I haven't hunted without my Green Arrow Tshirt ... so much so that I am now scared to hunt without it .
*always have one of my three lucky knives [ long story ]
* Much like Steve Fausel in MBB111 ... I always have my shoelaces really tight.
* Don't eat the yellow snow
I had a pair of old-favourite orange undies that I happened to be wearing (under my trousers) at the time of a few successful bowhunts, and for awhile they were my bowhunting undies. But they have long since perished, and gone to a better place.
I've thought about this a bit. I can't come up with something I do or believe that would qualify as a superstition. I have many things I consider crucial to increasing my chances of success but all are more techniques and gear-related.
Maybe, my strong belief in camo clothing is a superstition?
Man, you guys are Weird! :biglaugh:
I do need one of those Green Arrow shirts though!
I have a lucky hat that has been with me for a long time. I would take a marker and write the date and sex of the deer under the bill. The markings have faded so many times and new ones take their place each year.
I always try to kill a poisonous snake before each season.
I have a Pittsburgh Penguins terrible towel draped over the doorway to my bow room. I brush my bow tip through it when I leave and return from a hunt.
Hey swamp warrior , Are those short, sweet kisses, or the long slow lingering wet kind. It makes a difference!
I carry 4 arrows with me If I don't see or shoot at a deer in a cople of days change to another arrow. All arrows have to be numbered!
Lucky hat and knife.
I think some of us may have OCD,OCD,OCD,sorry,I have to say that three times for it to work :goldtooth:
I try and make the most out of the opportunities that are presented to me...no luck or superstition here.
Never take a camera with you. This started during fishing outings. I won't even let anyone in the boat with one - haven't been skunked unless someone had a camera. Thinking back on it, I've never killed a deer, bear or elk when I had a camera in my pack.
Found feathers are bad luck. Always wear your Bear Claw when hunting.....good mojo! Always give thanks to the animal at the kill or bad luck will follow.
I have to have the cock feathers on my arrows on the opposite side of the riser in my quiver or to the right for a right hand shooter.
Found feathers are good luck. They tell you that the birds have accepted you and will help you.
Sometimes a blue jay will lie to you, though, by leaving a feather when he really intends to rat you out at the first opportunity. They like to joke like that.
I always carry Everready, my three-blade folder. It is extra-good luck to carry your license, too.
Hey, it's time to wash and repair clothes, and get the day pack ready, isn't it!
Killdeer :bigsmyl:
Take a shot at the 1st legal bird w/i my effective hunting range, for it may be the only opportunity presented the whole season.
my superstition is to make sure I clear the bowels before I leave and don't foget my bow...
I have skinned every big game animal that I have ever killed with the same knife that I got from my grandfather about 40 years ago...if I forget it, hunt is over until it arrives.
i have 2 hats i wear...an nwtf ball cap for early season and my dorfman pacific hat. Also if luck is scarce i dont shave for 2 weeks. If i dont wear one of them...no deer.
i also look for rabbits on the way to go hunting. see rabbits see deer.
i hunt with a four arrow quiver on my bow and will take the first arrow (the arrow nearest me) in my quiver and nock it. if i see lots of deer that night then ill use it the next night, if not ill switch to arrow number two the next night, and so on. ima weirdooo.
I'm with KentuckyTJ on this one! :scared:
Wow, knew there were some out there, but some of these are funny :campfire: :biglaugh:
I always carry four arrows and all have to have a different type and style of broadhead. One must be older than i am.
Are we weird? What is weird?
I always have on a piece of turquoise jewelry...usually a bracelet. Native Americans believed that it made their arrows fly straight. Now I just need something to keep the arrows from flying too high or too low. :archer2:

They aren't the sloppy kind, more of a "peck". Just bad jujus if it's not done. Have to treat the weapon with respect and it will follow through for you.

That may be the best advice ever!
When I lay my clothes out the night before, whether at home or in camp, I must place my primary flashlight into my right boot for in the morning.
Comes from childhood hunts with my Dad, and now I don't feel right unless I do it.
Do not hunt in the rain. Sugar melts but I get kinda messy. :dunno:
Never thought it superstitious but for decades I don't go into the woods w/o my hat. Had a special brown hat very similar. Gave to Mr. Greg Coffey's son.

Never carry a knife with me. I always go home and get my guttin clothes and boots and yes my knife. I always have to chew apple flavored gum! Shawn
Apple flavored Jolly Ranchers!! :D
I am insanely picky about my clothes and keeping clean. It's crazy, ask my wife!!
I'm a "Lunatic", I go by the moon to determin when and where I hunt. In the last 7 years, I have brought at least 3 deer a year to the freezer using the moon.
One night, before opening morning, about three A.M. I had a dream. I was dreaming that it was opening morning and a large bodied modest racked 8 pointer was walking past me, nice and close. Just when I was getting ready to shoot it turned and in a very deep basso voice said "what do think you're doing." I won't shoot at anything opening day, ever again.
Gotta have the knife my dad gave me as I walked out the door on my first deer hunt. Also, the camera stays on the truck, or camp if I am in the back county, its just bad luck for me if I have one with me.
Got to have my hat. If my dog is up playing all nite ,its going to be a real good day to go calling. if he's quiet all nite I go any way. When he's realy bunkers I call in sick and go.I also talk to my koi.
I remember one deer season when i was alot younger, I had decided that my clothes and skin had smelt of human. Only after this did i decide that i wasn't going to wash my clothes or bathe till i killed a deer. A week later my hunting mates finally forced me in the shower and i killed a deer the following day. The following day i killed a deer. :archer:
Like KillDeer... I too like to find feathers when out hunting. I always pick one up and stash them into my bow quiver where the BH's live.
And I think I need a lucky hat... one of those short brimmed ones that one of those thin, young looking Wensel brothers wear!
