Can anybody give me some tips on how to make a pair of moccasins? I have a few deer skins i tried to make into suede this spring without luck (didnt have the patience to rub them till absolutely dry.) Anyway, I thought i might try to make some stalking shoes with them. Anybody ever try this? info if you have any please.
thanks

If you google "patterns for making moccasins" there are a ton of good ideas if you don't get enough responses here. Good luck!
Benny,
PM me. I saved a thread off of another site that may have what you are looking for. It was posted in February 2008.

I wore out a pair with soles. I stopped off the soles and glued on a piece of leather. They have enough protection to the ever present rocks, we are in Nevada, but have a feel for what is under. Works fine
Pair of "Totes" and cusion insoles.
I have made several pairs of moccasins and I would really stay away from deer hide as a material. I just don't think it is durable enough for a pair of shoes. I like to use at least 8 oz (1/8" thick) leather and that means elk, moose, or buffalo. I personally like working with buffalo the best but either of those 3 will make you a fine pair of mocs. Here is a pic of a pair of boots I made for my sister out of buffalo.

I agree, deer skin will not hold up very long. I have always used Elk.
Ben,
I know you want to make a pair of mocs. I was thinking the same thing at one time. Instead I bought a pair. I really don't possess the skils to do it so I gave up. I did buy Arrow Mocs and love them.
In either case, I wish you success but do take a look at Arrow. At a minimum it will give you an idea of what designs are out there.

You might also try Yatahai Beads and Buckskins (www.yatahai.com). Sparrowhawk has a bunch of different moccasin styles and patterns available and she is a wealth of information on the subject. For leather, I would look at The Hide House (hidehouse.com) or Kentucky Leather and Hides (www.kentuckyleatherandhides.com). Both places have good products at good prices.
Darren, WOW, :scared: those are some mighty fine lookin' boots. You do some fine lookin' work. Good job.
WOW is right. them are some slick boots. the man has some skills I tell ya!
I need to get a pair for everyday and a pair for hunting. I will be buying mine tho,
Who hunts in mocs? What about scent?
Thanks for the kind words, gentlemen! I do make custom mocs for sale so if you would like to discuss getting a pair just PM me sometime. Everything I make is hand-sewn and tailor-made for the customer. Our operators are standing by.

Buy a pair of Chuck Taylors and glue deerhide on 'em!

I don't have the patience to do good leatherwork.
Be aware, mocs tend to be dangerously slick on wet ground. You'll want to coat the soles with something to combat that.
