Had few pics on the HH thread and thought I would repost here.
For you Northern fellers coming down to hunt I thought I would post some pics to get you pumped up....
For the record these did`nt come from Rays place....I hear his are bigger and more of them..lol.RC

Don`t worry they don`t bite...RC
all I see there is why my azz will be hunting in Seattle......yikes that would take away a little of the fun for me bd
RC,
Nice look'n copperhead
I don't miss being around those critters! Grizzlies are much easier to see....
Thanks for the encouragement RC, I'll stick to the jumbo sized Mosquitos and disease carrying ticks in minnesota....
:scared: :scared: :scared: :scared:
I hope it was not me that provked this RC.lol Thanks for sharing with us. YIKES!!!!!!!!!
Those are the biggest tomato worms I have ever seen.
Mine aren't HALF that size!
:campfire:
My wife can shoot a rattler into three pieces before she returns to earth. I on the other can transport myself through the space time continuum into another dimension at the first sound of a rattle.
This is why I love the North. Gator1 pretty much covers it.
Exactly why I hunted Ray's place in January where it was 22 degrees in the AM and only 40 in the afternoon........nary one of them critters in sight!
Makes huntin' up here look pretty tame. Our last trip to Ray's was in June, we did'nt see any snakes but then Ray says the hogs eat em... good for the hogs.
RC: I bet you guys walk a little slower while still hunting than we do "up nort."
Seeing all those critters at one sitting can put a person a little on edge. How many snakes/gators is one likely to see in a typical day of hunting?
Dude that is not right!!!
I probably wouldn't make it through the first week of hunting down there with my Minnesota instincts. I'd either be paralyzed by my imagination or make some stupid mistake about where I step or sit.
Cool pics though, and the snakes are really kind of pretty. Not many dangerous things where I hunt, doesn't mean there's nothing that can hurt you, but it's extremely unlikely.
Don`t let them pics hold you back. You won`t see many at all in a weeks hunt. Walk slow and pay attention. don`t put your hands on a stump or bush without looking. I have almost stepped on a lot I did`nt see.Fellas walking behind me would be ghost white and say "dude you almost stepped on that" and it would be a big rattler or cottonmouth. Happened more than once. Truth is I`ve never seen any of them in attack mode only self defense mode.Truth is I`ve reaped more pain from bumping a bush with a red wasp nest in it than anything else in the woods.RC
:scared: I dont think there is anything I am more scared of then snakes! Well other then the wife...
Couple of weeks ago I was at my parent's place and the bluejays were flat cuttin up down in the woods. When I went to investigate, they had a big black snake cornered giving him hell. I grabbed him by the tail and used my bow to pick him up with, he kind of crawled up around my quiver and made himself at home. I carried him back to the house and turned him loose under the shed to take care of some chipmonks.
Later that night I was watching the Braves game and had my bow laying on the table behind me. I kept smelling a nasty musky smell and couldn't figure out where it was coming from. Well it seems ole mister black snake gave my arrows some natural cover scent, they stank bad too. LOL Chris
Them red wasp and yellow jacket nest will getcha bout every time.
Good pics RC,snake and gators don't bother me.Them red wasp or hornets I want no part of.
I think I'll just keep hunting in the north RC. Snakes are the one thing that I have a phobia for! :scared:

yes... what Jesse said
Snakes, gators, killer bees and fire ants.
You southern boys are TOUGH!
Not to mention Grits!
You had all 4 snakes in there that a guy I work with is scared of. Big ones, little ones, live ones and dead ones. LOL
I can deal with the snakes around here. Mostly Copperheads and a occasional buzztail. One thing about snakes you know where the business end is.
Now spiders on the other hand will ruin my whole day if I walk through a web. HA HA
All of them critters will just go to sleep when you rub their bellies.
RC's right, the truth is they don't want to bite very often. I have only had cottonmouths actually come at me wanting a piece of me. I've had timber rattlers go in defense mode, and I've actually seen very few copperheads in the wild. I think they are probably the most timid, but if they hit you, you might as well jump in a fire, because that's what it will feel like.
Our lease is named Copperhead Hunting Club because one of the members was bit there. Caught him on the thumb sitting to watch for squirrels in October. He's tough as nails and said it was the most intense pain he had ever experienced.
Unless they won't back down, they are pretty much safe with me. I never had a REAL wantto skin a bow.
Good stuff RC! :)
i see a lot of bow backing in them pics, what are y'all skeered or somthin. ifn ya play it smart i see a lot snakes missin their hides. buzzards gotta , same as worms. rv
"....a bush with a red wasp nest in it "
RED WASPS BESIDES!!!!!
I'll be huntin in the winter thank you!!
Marty, You rub,I'll shoot.
Great pics RC. I'm glad we don't have as many as you! I wouldn't see many deer because of watching the ground all of the time. Is that second pic a light colored cottonmouth or just a souped up copperhead?
Thanks
Gerald
Cool pictures! I've heard they taste like chicken, said one cottonmouth to another! Think I'll stay up north. :scared:
Snakes...why did it have to be snakes?
The first page of this thread made me want to move to Canada! lol. I was in Georgia for 2 months in '01 and we did not see a snake the whole time we were there. Fire ants on the other hand, we didn't see many but felt ALOT! Good luck RC!
Boy-O-Boy you sure want to keep all your critters to yourself doncha. Because showing us northern guys pics like that will keep us right where we are "thank you very much".
!["" "[dntthnk]"]("graemlins/dntthnk.gif")
And here I was contemplating a hog hunt in the near future.
Wow, RC, that looks like QUITE an afternoon! I have yet to see even one of those sweet little critters in my swamp-walks.
Thanks for sharing.
Dang RC I am planning a hog/turkey hunt in Florida for the spring...you got me thinkin' 'bout snake chaps :scared:
Speaking of yellow jackets and localized terror.
My town is named after the local Indian word for them. From Bend to Canada on the east slope of the Cascades they get ferocious at the end of summer. I usually trap a whole five gallon bucket full of them in August and September.
First week of September. Hot as a pizza oven. Dusty. Heat waves. Yellow jackets everywhere way busier than bees. And you have to drain your carburator.
Find a shady spot and be quick, 'cause they're looking for water and meat and they'll find both if you pick a dusty sunny spot.
Now that's what I'm talking about! Thanks RC, you do the best job of creeping me out!
I read this and just can't stop thinking... "The yankee from Georgia is talking about folks 'up north'" :D
BTW, I'd love to come UP there for a couple copperheads. I only seem to see the babies around my place.
Rusty
Down South in LA
All that and 125 degree's with the humidity, with mosquito's as big as bats. What's not to love? ;) :D :D
I thought hunting was suspose to be somewhat relaxing. Its funny when I pump up a tree in the morning I worry about a squrill running down the tree an jumping on my head.
Now, that's a different world right there. I never was afraid of snakes, but what's to be afraid of up here? Nothin'.
If it's as you say OK as long as you keep awake to them, I can see getting a few for their hides. And the gators are a night time thing in boats, aren't they? Now that would be interesting....
Now I know why my Dad left Georgia and joined the Army during WWII. It was safer in the Pacific!
Can`t believe nobody has mentioned the gator with two turtles riding on his back...RC
and a forein snake too. the boa. and probobly some you diddnt see, great pics rc.
RC ain't lying about almost stepping on them. He stepped within 12 inches of this bad boy while I was hunting with him. I was walking behind him, and noticed a flash of white just in front of me. This dude was poised to strike and showing his "cottonmouth". He ended up choking to death on a judo point.

Wise guy huh RC. There goes me ever bidding on your hunt during St. Judes. :biglaugh:
No boa in those pics. The bright one with his head spread is a hognose snake.RC
Not this guy, I'll stay up north.
the one climbing the tree, what is it then?
Geeze ! Ive got the Hibbie Jibbies Now !
The one climbing the tree is a brown rat snake. Some folks call them oak snakes. They ain`t venomus but will bite you quick if you mess with them. they have an awful temper.RC

Must be an Italian snake!!!
I can say that I'm a Rizzo!!!!!!
ok, thanks. thats a new one to me..
Wow I loved the pictures and sure wished we had those herps here in Northern Michigan. Corn snakes, Rat snakes, rattlers, copper heads, mocasins, man you got cornacopia of snakes down there. And then you can throw in a gator or two to play with if the huntin for hogs is slow.
Have at it John, I got attacked by a 5-6foot blue racer a few years back and that broke me from wanting them things around me. They are pretty cool looking tho. :)
HOLY MOTHER OF GOD..MAN.... RUN.
Hey where did Steve go (jacobsladder)
Thanks RC now he will never go when it's warmer out. I've been trying to get him to wait for the weather to start to warm before we go down..lol
Terry
My Uncle was gonna stomp a black racer that was in the barn once for us kids, kinda showing off. It ran about half up his overhauls and he screamed and cussed like a little girl.He still gets mad 40 years later when we bring that up.RC

That is FUNNY
This is one reason that I really enjoy living in northern ontario! The other reasons are,no tornados, hurricanes tsunami's,earthquakes, lyme diseased ticks, etc only cold winters with a lot of snow.
Almost forgot, it,s almost impossible to trip on a Black Bear.LOL
RC
That's some nice looking rattleheadedcoppermoccasins.
You are correct. The mocassins are the ones that will come after you. Canebrake rattlers will not go after you, but they will stand their ground and strike. Copperheads will remain motionless and hope you leave them alone. I walk up on them from time to time. Had one crawl up my leg sitting motionless on the ground turkey hunting one morning, it was a wild morning!
Oh yeah, and as usual RC, great pics, thanks for taking us along.
Billy
that copperhead would look great with my Morrison riser. but they are really hard to find.
I`m ok with the snakes...but them gators...DANG!!!
RC, and Landshark Launcher...and all the rest of you guys who stomp around with those who bite back...you guys are some real woodsman.

RC, you got some strange looking pets down there
I love it. I had an "uncle" that was a licensed herpatologist, so I was kinda raised with snakes.
At Ft. Benning, during basic, I showed off my skills by catching a cottonmouth while on FTX. The drill sgts were NOT happy. LOL.
Great pics RC.
When you live and hunt down here you just get used to them being there. You will probably walk past and step over more than you actually see. Where I hunt you can walk down the access roads and it sounds like a squadron of B-29s warming up in the woods. Mosquitoes can be quite noisy. The only snake I have yet to see here is the Eastern Coral snake. Everything is else is quite abundant in the these woods. It is illegal to kill them on the NWRs here in Mississippi.
RC...great photos HOWEVER...you have convinced me I'd rather remain up here in the Northeast chasing around and side stepping these critters...

Love it RC, thanks for posting! Keep scaring away the other yankees and I'll have no problem finding a bunk in camp!
Critters like that, that ain't tough enough to handle OUR winters, should be no concern! :nono:
While theyre all beautiful, I cant say Ive ever seen one prettier than that hog nose. I love snakes but do have healthy respect for the poisonous ones. RC, You oughta have your own show on Nat Geo.Thanks for the pics.
Gotta love the hog nose,if he can't scare you off he'll roll over and play dead.LOL.
Those things scare the absolute heck out of me......bears, wolves, coyotes, LaClair pissed off because I ate all the pie....ANYTHING but snakes!
Another reason I love hunting with RC, he appreciates all of God's creatures, even the semi-dangerous ones. But why doesn't he have any close-ups like this....
Let's see,on my property I have no mosquitos, no snakes, no gators, no ticks or crazy ants, just deer, hogs, grouse, squirrels, yotes, fox and groundhogs. Life is good. I did see a garter snakes once but I gave it a warning with my tractor and haven't seen it since.
Jeff...you got no sense. Like I told Mudfeather once...I love you like a Brother but if you pick up a snake and come at me I`ll cut you and pray for you stop bleeding...lol.RC
I'm with you on that one RC, that Holchin is just not right in the head........I'm happy right here in good ole NH where I never see those things.....
David
This is one of my harmless "pet" snakes that helps control the mice and rats at my farm and house...
Here it is after a GOOD night at the all-you-can-eat rat buffet...
After seeing those pics, I won't even drive in the South!
up here we need to watch out for the bunnies...

true true true, Was even funner than all the snakes, gators, humidity, high temps and mosquitos rolled into one, is being out in them every day cruising timber, marking smz's and all other good general forestry work! Before i moved down to the lower country where i live and work now if i saw a snake I was done for the day, now at certain times of the year if I see 25-50 in a day especially doing site prep burning I am not surprised!! :D
LA Trapper is right. I have been chased by a moccasin more than once. Landshark 160 has the right idea. However, if it were my arrow, I might just leave it!
Just because we don't see them(a lot) up here, doesn't mean they aren't here. NY is home to three types of rattlers and the northern copperhead. I have seen two rattlers(in the wild). Never saw a copperhead but a coworker lost a dog to a snakebite, and a guy got bit three years ago right down the road.
Pays to keep your eyes open and be aware. :)
Love it, RC!
May I join in the fun? Except for us, it's our Southerners who miss-out on the variety we have, although they still have plenty of cheeky (deadly) snakes.

We don't have nearly the number of species but prairie rattlers can be pretty thick in some areas and they can have attitude.
Great snake pics! We got plenty of them here too.
While I love looking at pictures I do have a preference for deer and the like...lol
Gives me the willies just looking at all those poisonous "no legs"...lol
God bless,Mudd
When you grow up in the Texas brush country you just get used to them and accept that you look before you sit, step or lay your hand on something.. used to have to kill the Black Widows in the outhouse before Mom would go in.. :D
Ive spent my life outdoors and have only had a couple of close calls. Watch where you put your hands and feet. I usually end up killing one or two snakes a year, only if they are where they could hurt me or someone else.
Dont worry about gators unless they're really big. Ive run several off with a stick so I could get to work. Its all what your used to.
I forgot to mention that I commercially crawfished for two years when I got out of college due to the poor economy. Saw dozens of mocassins weekly. In 1984 one jumped out of a open crawfish trap (barrel trap) when I pulled it out of the water. It landed on my left arm crawled across my chest under my neck and down my my right arm into the crawfish boat and under the seat. Almost went into my hip boot.
I had a muddy brown stripe across my white tee shirt where the snake skee-dattled to get moving. My wife, financee at the time, asked what made that muddy stripe across my chest that evening when I got off. I told her and she got weak in the knees.
Saw lots of big ones. It ain't for the weak of heart.
Billy
you fellas down there are brave if i go down i'll wait till January when it's sweat shirt weather down there and still stay inside now thanks RC
where all those pics of them snakes in Australia poisonous i dont know my snakes that well from the ones we have here in our south to other country's
What kind of snakes are those Ben?
YeeHaw RC!!! If it aint the truth!! We've got snakes on snakes below the Mason Dixon.
Ben, I'd have moved to Australia except for those bad boy snakes. Out of 20 DEADLIEST snakes in the whole world.., 10 are in Australia!! No thanks. Makes my BVD's real nervous.
The big ones are olive pythons. The cute little yellow one is a golden tree snake, perhaps, and not too poisonous at all. The skinny brown one is a brown, and that's a good one to avoid being bitten by. The crocodiles are freshies, not those untrustworthy so-called salties, who misrepresent themselves with their name to the unsuspecting enjoying a dip in fresh water.
