Title: Does your bow have a name???
Post by: USN_Sam1385 on August 08, 2011, 09:49:00 PM
I have been trying to find a good name for my bow for months now, but haven't been able to fully settle on something.

I have never named an item of mine before. Haven't named any of my guns, or my motorcycles.

Only thing I have ever chosen a name for was my son. ;-p

I want to name my bow though...

What are the names some of you have given to your bow???

My first Massie Longhorn, all osage is named with medical terminology.
hemo = blood
thorax = chest

Thus: Hemothorax or bloody chest. It seemed fitting.

My Widow is named "Boanerge" meaning son of thunder, which is what Jesus called James and John
The next Hill I buy I am thinking of naming "Marian"  after Maid Marian of Robin Hood
My late Ford Bronco was named "Nadine" after the George Thorogood song of the same name.
My Tacoma is named "The Black Pearl", the paint is black sand pearl
I like naming my bows and trucks, kinda makes 'em part of the family.

I have called my bows a few unsavory things, but have not formerly christened any.

Mike, I thought your bow of many colors would go in for a princess name, and that one could be called wormy or if you like the children's theme you could go with Lowly.  :p

I have 3 bows I use regularly.

1st custom bow:

"Pop"

Big river long bow made with my father present and reintroduced him to trad archery. He used it for a month and promptly ordered one for himself.

2. 68" Big River, all black with a red stripe:
"Ravenous"

named after I no sooner stated my bow needed a name and a raven overhead started squaking.

3. G&L Mantis
"Prayer"

play on words as one who preys and sending a message upstairs.

I have one that I made from an ugly, marginal, osage core.  Bamboo-backed.  I made it to shoot from a ground blind-short for me.  I named it the "Blind Sow".  The Blind Sow had killed a deer and a turkey so she is looking better.

Owlbait, that mark in your bow may signal a weak spot and may break causing you injury. Please send it to me, so that I may try to shoot it till it breaks and save you serious trouble!

My elk bow was dubbed "Native Son". I was born in Colorado but raised in Maryland. I go back every few years on an elk hunt and thought that would be a good name for my new Elk hunting partner.

Plus my brother was born in Maryland but has lived in Colorado for 15 years and it's a running barb between us - neither would qualify for native plates in the state in which we reside but would in the state of the other. And the cool thing is it bothers him more than me!!!

Almost 50 years old and I still love picking on my little bro.....some things just never grow old   :smileystooges:

My first Big River longbow has Dirty bamboo limbs with an Osage and Black phenolic riser, with elk antler tips. I used her on my fist trad season last fall. Her colors reminded me of an "Indian Summer" so thats what i named her, she brought me WAY lots of luck last year especially when my Indian summer went to the Bad lands of North Dakota last Nov, it's like she and i was meant to be there. Names will come for all the rest, when i get them out hunting for a season.

After ordering a new Sarrels Blueridge takedown longbow, Bob called me up to come over his place and try out the grip before he put the finish on it. I ordered the bow "plain Jane" with a solid riser and black glass limbs. While I was testing out the new ride at his shop another fellow was there also to look at some of Bob's bows. Bob introduced me to the other guy and said something to the effect of "Bisch has killed more animals with a longbow than the Black Plague". Well. my tiny little pea brain got to ticking and I told Bob right there that this bow was named Black Plague and to put it on the upper limb.

I never had named a bow before and really had not planned on naming this one but it just sort of happened. That bow is now my go-to bow.

I usually let a bow name its self....

Sizzle, Herd Bull, With Authority, Zip Code, Big Bad Wolf....

But I once named a bow before it was built.....I named it 'Tines' and designated it to kill a big buck with it....and the colors represented the many colors of the tines we chase....this was the 1st buck I killed with Tines...

I committed this 60 inch - 64#@28 Thunderstick MOAB to taking a big buck.  I have been taking this bow exclusively here in GA for 2 seasons hoping to get a nice buck with it.  The lams are Tamo Ash, and the colors of the limbs represent the many colors of the tines we chase.  And did I ever take a nice buck with it!...a 140 class 260# bruiser ten point.  Bout as pretty as they come......

So...it depends...most of mine have earned names...something along the way names it....but this one was named before hand and was destine for that name.

You can read the story here....

I got a SunBear from Charlie Lamb "Big Bad Wolf" and it had 3 light hash marks on the bow....I noticed it and didn't know why they were on the upper limb...but soon found out....another bow that killed 3 pigs in one weekend....

  St Jude\\'s Okeechobee 2009 Hunt (http://tradgang.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=069869;p=1)

So....it depends on you or the bow...you can name it before hand...or let the name come to the bow.

Great pics everyone!

Killdeer, your dog is a sweetheart...you can see it in her eyes.

That is the largest deer heart I have ever seen.
Something a hunter can appreciate, especially sliced thin, and fried in butter with a hint of garlic and some hickory smoked salt.

My "go to" bow is a Pittsley Predator. I call it "Serious business".

At my house, hunting is serious business. Hit them hard, and hit them good...serious business.

The only bows of mine at are named are my MOAB's. My first was orfered for one purpose- huntin deer. Very basic bow, dymonwood riser, with bamboo venneer on the limbs. Simple, but effective. I call this bow "Meat".

My 2nd MOAB, argueably my favorite, for certain the prettiest, is my Thunderstick MOAB Arrow Inlay Bow. It holds a special place in my heart, the money I paid for it was used to help send a sick child on a dream hunt. Pretty as a picture, I call this one "The Mistress". When it arrived, as I unboxed it I told my wife, oh, by the way, you're sleepin on the couch tonite. Hence the name.

And finally, the newest in my collection ofMOAB's is my takedown. I spec'ed this one with one thing in mind-elk. Its my elk huntin bow,and I call it "Dark Timber". This bow will kill nothing before it kills an elk. If I do not get an elk with it, I'll deer hunt with either Meat or The Mistress this year. I usually alternate between the two each season so I dont have to make adjustments in my shot.

I guess the only named bow I have was named by a friend.  It is a 67#@28" Robertson. My hunting buddy named it.  I had several bows at the time, but whenever I took this one I killed a deer.  This went on for a whole season and in more than one state.  Eric then scolded me for taking any other bow and named my Robertson the "Killin' Styk".  That has been 6 or 7 years ago, he still gets mad if I don't have the "Killin' Styk" in hand when we leave for a hunt.

God Bless,
Nathan

When I got back into traditional archery last year, I bought a new bow and named it "Cricket" which was my grandfather's nickname for me.  He was the archer/bowyer in the family.  Turned out the name worked in more ways than that -- I had the hardest time getting it truly quiet, it always chirped a little on the shot.  I think he would have been proud when I got my deer with it last fall.

I pre-named my swap bow this year for the recipient using a word that showed up in my inbox as a word of the day and seemed perfect.

While I like the idea of naming my bows (and yes Pete, I have been known to name a few tools as well), it's not always easy.  My kids named a Howard Hill Owl "Hedwig" after watching a Harry Potter movie.  I went with it, but the osage didn't match the owl they were thinking of, so even they eventually decided it needed something different.  So I'm still searching.  Maybe after this fall it will have found its own name.

I always figured I'd name my bows but then I never have.  After reading this thread, however, I believe I'm going to hang a name on my favorite hunting bow.  It just seems appropriate.

My Father-In-Law passed away this past October.  For years he was a close hunting partner of mine and, though he never approved of my stick and string, he was a very skilled and highly successful hunter. He had several nicknames and one of them was Chicken Hawk.

Chicken Hawk seems to me to be a good name for a hunting bow, so Chicken Hawk it is. Maybe I can find some of his luck and success as I hunt with it this fall...

Awesome answers everyone.

I think that my Coup stick is probably going to be named simply "Red."

Red was the name of my grandfather's last dog, a Chesapeke Bay Retriever. That dog was absolutely gorgeous and could always be found walking just behind my grandfather's heels. The dog was a heck of a retriever, and my grandfather used to throw single clam and oyster shells into the muddy water, only to have Red jump in, dive down 10 feet, and come back up with the shell.

My grandfather spent 33 years in the US Navy, and then spent the rest of his life on about 7 acres of waterfront property at the mouth of the Rhapahanock River , where it feeds into the Bay just outside of White Stone, VA. Their house was at the end of a long gravel road, and I have many fond memories on that property. My grandmother grew the BIGGEST magnolia bushes on the property, and they had huge, beautiful flowers.

My grandfather had a dock and 2 boats. One a sailboat, and the other a small flatbed fishing boat that doubled as a personal crabbing boat.

Nothing beats Chesapeake Bay blue crabs, (a.k.a. Maryland Blue crabs), and we use to catch them by the bushel. Every once in a while he would even let me drive the boat.

My grandfather passed away about 10 years ago, and Red passed away 2 months after him. We had them both cremated, and then had a small funeral for them at the end of the dock on the property at sunset. We threw my grandfather's ashes into the water first, followed closely behind by his favorite dog Red, and then threw about 200 giant magnolia flowers. It all floated away into the sunset, and was exactly how my grandfather would have wanted it.

Red was also the color of:

the dress that my wife wore on our very first date.

my first truck given to me by my Grandfather after he passed away.

my favorite animal, the Red tailed hawk.

the hen feathers on my arrows.

Finally, my bow is an almost orange-red hue.

I have several names for my bows, and the one I use at any given time depends on how well - or how poorly - I shoot. Genrally, though, I refer to any bow I am handling well as Sweetie or Baby.
