Just getting ready to start fine tuning my new bow. I live in the boonies and no archery shop within 10h drive. Would like to cut my mfx's little by little to find the right lenght for perfect flight. Any suggestions on how I could cut my arrows. I would really appreciate your advice.
Well, it all depends on what you have. You need a high speed cutter to cut carbons. Do you have a dremel? I've heard guys use a hack saw but never tried it myself. I think it would be pretty hard to cut small lengths with one without fraying the carbon.
carbons cut best with a carbide cutoff wheel, such as used with a dremel. most anything else -saws- will "splinter" the carbon.
I have used a Dremel with a cut off blade in it.
I use the cheap Harbor freight mini-chop saw. It works o.k.
I've cut carbons with a hack saw and mitre box. First wrap the area to be cut with a layer of masking tape to prevent splinters. Cut with gentle strokes and a fine tooth blade. After the cut, champfer the inside and outside edges ever so slightly with fine grit sandpaper.
If you need to square the end, lay the shaft along a piece of wood, 2x4 for example, that's cut square on one end. Move that piece of wood with the arrow back and forth on another flat surface to which you've attached some fine grit sandpaper. Best to do this horizontally so the table surface keeps one side of the shaft square and the block keeps the other side square/90 degrees to the sanding block/surface. Good luck.
Dremel tool will work
Thanks for the advice guys. Going to try to tune my soon
X2 on the Harbor Freight mini cutoff saw.
Used to cut carbon golf shafts by taping w/masking tape first. Never a problem. Plenty to be said for high speed carbide wheels.
