Title: A wonderful"Bear Knife Set" found at the TBW Rendezvous
Post by: L. E. Carroll on August 08, 2011, 02:57:00 AM
Wanted to share pictures of the lastest addition to my expanding archery collection....

You don't see many of these floating around and the only other I have seen was in a glass case and safe from harm...

The knife is a Beautiful "Western 648" that looks to have hardly ever seen a stone during it's lifetime... The file has an orangeish color handle with "BEAR" in raised lettering, and the stone is a "Norton" just as it should be, and shows very minimal wear.... The case does show some wear and is dry with a bit of cracking [ especially where the securement strap bends over the knife hilt to snap...

I am stoked by this find, and am seeking your advise as to if I should try treating the sheath with something like "Pitchblend" to soften and re-store the leather or leave as is and let the true "natural beauty" be seen.... [Realizing that this knife will from here on have a permanent place in my gun safe]

What are your thoughts?

thanx,
Gene

Nice set!!  What I would do is, remake the original sheath, if you want to use the set, and store the origial secure...  and of course greasening the leather sheath...

I love those sets, well done!
I'd recommend contacting Scott Teaschner (Sponsor here, Wyoming Wildlife Artistry)who is a leather artist and sells some excellent leather care products and info for free. I bet he knows how to bring that case back.

Gene I would contact one of the leather workers on here as described above they can best tell yo what to do there. The pics look fuzzy, but the knife looked to have some light rust on it. Carbon steel will continue to rust, unless cleaned. I do a lot of knife rehab for folks here on the site, no charge. If you want the blade and brass guard polished and cleaned, pm me and will get it back out to you in a day or two of recieveing it. Hope this helps, Sam.

Gene...quit it...  :deadhorse:

Try Lexol on the leather after you dye it hot pink.

:biglaugh:        :biglaugh:    I think Lon had a "shot' at it at an earlier shoot or two... but he may have "choked" a bit.

You know me....the most "Sparatic" person you may know..        Something "shiney" or "rare" catches my eye         I do what it takes to wheel and deal to try and make it mine.    ;)

Thanks for all of the suggestions.
