O.k. I better rephrase that I mean Possibles bag! :biglaugh: I am really thinking of ordering one this fall from Asbell's website but would like to see pics of the inside if possible and different wool patterns if anybody cares to share....I'm not into carrying a heavy back pack and never had a "Man Purse" before and would like to see you post yours if you will..I know Ron La Clair will post his and if he's man enougth to wear one well I will too...So please let me see how much you can toss in one of these things if you will..Thanks in advance to all...God Bless, Keefer's <><
9.99 and it is perfect, even has smaller pockets on the inside. It is some sort of a gas mask holder and is made from heavy duty canvas.

I have an oil clothe haverstack I use. Sorry no picks.
I will be calling Teresa about the possibles bag as well, but wanted to know about the pockets and storage available. Also I don't like the bag to flop about,so need to find out if a belt loop is available. Maxx

Well I only really want to see what's inside the pouch ! At least you covered "most" of it up. :biglaugh: I agree the leather one looks very nice...
Killie that is sweet, where did you get it. Kinda looks like a mail bag.

If you want a smaller one that carries a few little odds and ends like a small torch, mobile phone, keys and so-forth, check-out www.texashuntco.com. (http://www.texashuntco.com.) I have one, and really like it.

I'm a pretty big possibles bag proponent....Teresa Asbell makes the best, in my opinion
I have been unable to access the haversacks on GFA's site. I click on "quivers/haversacks" and all I get is the ad for the quiver and fletching cover---no haversack. How do I find the haversacks on his site?
Joe - look under "gifts"
(http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h474/nigelkylatrista/quiver.jpg) here's mine.
Anyone have inside pics or dimensions for the Bison Gear packs the Houndaman and one other they have look really nice.
Roger,
I like that and looks about the same amount of stuff I would carry ! Anybody got any plaid colored ones they want to share?
Here's one I made this spring:
I bought one from Theresa Asbell at Tannehill in the spring, and I think I'm really going to like it. But, so far, in this 100 degree weather, I just haven't been able to bring myself to shoulder a wool bag when I shoot. Therefore, I have not adequately tested it.
I can't stand having my wallet in my back pocket while driving. Plus wrangling my keys, and cell phone,I almost want to carry a Haversack on a daily basis...does anybody do that? Or am I crossing into purse territory. :dunno:
I do that same thing reverrat...real men did it for centuries! :) Pockets are a relatively new invention in the scheme of things. I have an Osprey shoulder pack and an Army surplus rucksack that I often use. Plus, I weight a $1.25, and that much in my pocket will literally pull my britches down!
riverrat, for years my "purse" was a ten dollar camo fannypack from K-Mart. Lightweight cotton with a plethora of pockets. Just sling it over your shoulder and saunter forth in all your manly glory! Plus, when at a gun show or in the vendors' tent, you can buckle it around your waist and have your hands free to fondle the merchandise. And your wallet is still ever so handy... :goldtooth:
Riverrat I wouldn't do that! Woods only! :saywhat:
Riverrat, nothing wrong in carrying a shoulder bag. I carry one all the time here in Oregon. It is a Frost River Grand Marais mail bag that is waxed canvas. Works great in wet weather also. Most folks are smart enough not to say too much to me about it.

Well I make bags like that for a living all the time :)
Can't post any pics right now but will later.. Got one on the sponsors classifieds and bunches on my website I've made...
Ken
Riverrat,
I guess it's o.k.to wear one in public but I would only carry it over your neck and down one side of your body but "NEVER: EVER let me see ya carry it on your inside elbow like an old lady would when shopping cause I'll think you're a little different then most men... :biglaugh:
Ha! Keefer! you have got my word on that. LOL!
Here are some pics of one I made this summer from buffalo leather.

Hey Bel007---thanks for the guidance on finding the GFA haversacks. Would you believe I clicked every other link EXCEPT that one?
Many years ago, Roger Rothhaar exposed me to the convenience of haversacks and I found one at Cabela's. I have had it for at least 20 years now---it is a camo model made of some sort of soft material. Works pretty good but beginning to wear a bit.
Sure are a lot of nice "manpurses" in here---I like all of them.

Love that thoughtful lady!
Kenneth,
Wow they look like they came out of an old Treasure chest...Nicely done!Hope you don't mind me asking but to get that Old look do you soak the material in Tea bags? My wife use to make up some old looking pics and sew scripture on the material and if I remembered correctly she used tea bags to stain the material to look old...I've been following some of your posts when you make these and you're doing a great job!
Thanks Keefer.. there are tons more on my website www.CalumetTradegoods.com (http://www.calumettradegoods.com)
If its not for sale its under sold items... for examples of what i can do..
I use many things to "age" stuff... Including AGING itself LOL...
Depends on the materials.. you can destroy some leathers and threads if you dont know what you are doing.. Tea is good for powder horns.. Coffee is good for many things,, black walnuts,,,
various iorn oxide mixtures and some other things I dont talk about because its a secret.. :saywhat:
heat can be a freind or enemy... and i always try to find LOD materials in antique shops thrift stores etc...
Thanks...
Ken Bueche
Ken,
You ain't been diggin up old lady gravesights and removing there old pocket books from there Cold dead arms have ya? ... :biglaugh: :nono:
Ken you can have all the black walnuts or hulls you need if they make this year.I have one tree at my camp and it usually make plenty fruit but very nasty when you boil it with traps, stains everything. The fruit is very good to eat if you can get to it.Kip
I can use walnuts as much as i can get... nto many around here
heres anothern :)

Keefer mind your own buisness :o
drive up this way for walnuts. You could fill your truck bed.
I can always use walnuts :)
Heres a bag I finished last night for a Tradganger in PA.. (http://i913.photobucket.com/albums/ac332/kdbueche/ottobag1.jpg) (http://i913.photobucket.com/albums/ac332/kdbueche/ottobag2.jpg) (http://i913.photobucket.com/albums/ac332/kdbueche/ottobag3.jpg) (http://i913.photobucket.com/albums/ac332/kdbueche/ottobag4.jpg) (http://i913.photobucket.com/albums/ac332/kdbueche/ottobag5.jpg)
all bags are hand sewn and come with optional removable quiver.. forgive me if im "plugging" my bags here but I make museum reproductions for a living and I get excited when I can make trad bow goods because i can be creative and not have to follow certain guidelines and make a exact copy of something :)
Here the detachable quiver I make that can come with one of my bags.. It can be moved high low. on side,, left or right.. anywhere you want it.. and my prices dont kill the bank for the quality of work you get.. I will say that anyone that wants to try one out I will send you a bag and quver no charge.. use it for a week if you dont like it send it back!!!!!!!!!!!!! Like it just send me the money or Ill make you one to your specs... cant be easier than that :) ...
My goal is to make more and more trad bow goods to post on my website and become a full sponsor here on Tradgang... The strict living history world limits me on my "creativity" side LOL

Those are pretty sweet there Jerry, like it.. :)
Ken,
Now I like the looks of the plaid one with the quiver! Are most of them leather or do you do wool ones also without the quiver option ? You can't beat a deal like that to have one made and sent to ya to try...I need to save some penny's so I can get one...Hey Ken thanks for all those pics cause this to me is part of the traditional things we like to use...Men we need to carry these over the neck and under the shoulder and not the elbow...I'm affraid that even them squirrells might throw walnuts and acorns at us from above if we carry them like a lady would.... :D
If you look on my website on gallery and items sold you will see all sorts of bags etc...
the quiver is an option for and extra $50.
bags can be all leather, wool, linen, canvas,, most are a combo of various..
I would send one out and if the person keeps it they pay me within 2 weeks and I will donate part of the money to St Judes or another tradgang charity also..
SO< that gives you the bag for 2 weeks to try and another 2 weeks to pay for it... 30 days :)
That shouls be enough time to sneek from the wifes cookie jar and not get caught..
OH, and full bag price with EVERYTHING
*Bag
*Knife and sheath included!!!!
*Quiver
*2 to 3 pocket options and materials
$250

Ken,
I just figured out how the men can get a Possible's bag from borrowing money from their wive's cookie jar!
Tell her you saw this Purse and wanted to surprise her with it and you got it for her..
She would in return think you were very thoughtful of thinking of her and think it looks very old...Then you men will say "well honey" you know I bet it would make a nice travel sack for taking my gear in the woods..
She will say "if you are man enougth to wear it then you can have it"!
I ain't the smartest apple in the basket but I think this is called reverse phycology or something like that?

Thats good thinking!!!!! I have actually sold quite a few to women who just liked the rugged look.. sewd a holster in one for a women's 38 speacial who had a carry permit, LOL..
I just finished two for one of the producers of the history channel and have some im doing for
the parks service in Mass, close to Lexington and Concord.. I i should mention they are all double lined and heavily treated with beeswax..
they are made to abuse...and the beeswax is a natural sent for when hunting.. I generaly use mine on 3D shoots and stumping..
Kenny's stuff is even better looking first hand! I had the opportunity to check out his possibles bags/haversacks up at our hunt in Quebec. You won't be sorry if you buy something from him! Top notch guy. :readit:
Just checked out your website again and all I can say is WOW! This is a cool website and you guys look like you just walked back in time...Your photos standing in a field with some mountain tops just look so realistic of that time period...Thanks and now we need to see you on a Pinto chasing Buffalos with the bow in hand at full draw with a stone arrow head Ken! :D
This is one I made out of one of my halfmount bears backskin. In the pics it is loaded with blackpowder stuff, but I use it for bow season also if hunting for the day or 3D weekend shoots. The strapo is from an elk I had tanned.

Bear is cool,, I have some Im going to make one with... Thats cool David!!! well made...
Need a nice beaded strap :)
Wore camo waistpack until switching to trad. Carried way too much cmpnd nonsense!
Wear also a canteen w/long strap to position out of the way of my BQ. KISS method fixed me on simple 1-bag either of these 2 (prefer the green) holding these essentials;

If useful your bag works for me. No color coordinating. Charlie, you had me laughing big on the other thread. Plinker, way nice stuff there partner!
Yeah Ken (bowplinker),I meant to comment on all your stuff. You make some serious trad gear. Like right out of a history book.
Thanks David, much appreciated :) its what I love to do !!
If I'm not mistaken Bjorn's bag is the same bag that I use. If so it is the LL Bean small, canvas
messenger bag. I find it to be perfect for my needs. I liked it so much I got the larger one for everyday use, but its especially nice when you travel by air.
Does anyone have a pic of the inside of Mrs. Asbells? If you have a made of wool I shure would like to see what you got....Thanks again everyone ...Keefer's <')))><

Couple of flashlights ,gps, meat sack, knife , cord, fishing stuff, bug spray, small medicine bottle with common stuff like asprin etc., two knives one has a saw blade, face paint, puffer bottle, compass, extra batteries, snack and water, small tripod for pics and camera.super glue, dental floss and a couple extra arrow nocks and a small file. The Bison Gear haversacks are pretty good sized. I usually carry an extra knife, 50' of paracord, rubber gloves/ziplock bags, flashlight, headlamp, tags, a couple bottles of water/snacks, a compass, and a stocking cap and gloves if it's cold. There's also slots on the bottom for 1" webbing straps, so if I need it I can roll up a coat or rainwear and strap it to the bottom.
Brad
RC would you mind showing exactly how this is to be worn?
Thanks!
God bless,Mudd
Brad that is a "storage shed"! :biglaugh: I like the looks of that one and about the right size too..Thanks for the pic... Keefer's <><
I use Bison Houndsman pretty exclusively , exactly as Brad posted . Great bit of gear .
Hey Roy, it looks like RC has done that up like a light weight set of web gear. Where the two straps are wrapped together would run up your spine and the open straps would go over your shoulders like backpack straps. Very slick idea RC!
Here is my man purse. Braintan deer and bear fur belt bag. Blue ticking on the inside. Abalone shell and antler button. Glass and brass crow beads. Made by good buddy Chuck Rush.

I like RC's. One bandoleer has his trad stuff in it, the other still has the Claymore in case someone sneaks up on him in the night. ;)
I just got this one and I had to share!
Coyote Fur and the snake skin is "alicante" as we call it here in Mx, I belive the sc name is "Pituophis deppei deppei" but not sure

This is a great idea for carrying gear with back quiver. Thanks guys.
The reason I have been wanting one is to carry water. I don't want to carry one of those bladders on my back in addition to a shoulder bag.
Do you all carry water in your bags? Have you came up with a way to carry plenty of water and be able to get to it easily?
I also don't know if I want to mount the quiver on my bag or on my bow. I have never had a quiver on my bow, but these new strap on quivers look pretty darn light and seem to work really well.
I have been looking at a shoulder side pack from Maxpedition. Really nice stuff, but kinda expensive. Other varieties on ****, but not as good quality wise.
Keep 'em coming everyone. Nice stuff.
Nalajr
I have been using a small LL Bean shoulder bag for day hunts. Carry everthing I need and more. Nala, I just carry a small 16oz plastic bottle of water with me when I hunt up on the mountain. Not quite enough because I am sure thirsty, though, when I get back to the truck. I have one of those Maxpedition Versipacks. They are awesome and looks like it will last forever. The only draw back is that they are a little loud when new. Fine after they are broken in, though.
Was wondering what model bison gear packs those are.

Dave,
What material is that one?
Hey,
I don't think I could make it on one 16oz bottle of water especially in the TEXAS heat. Even when it's cool I have to be drinking all the time because of a chronic dry mouth problem.
I think one of the Maxpedition Versipacks is probably going to be my only solution.

I got really, really tired of toting around 'water bottles' that crinkle and make lots of noise, take up too much space and are in general just a nuisance. But then water is also an essential item as far as I'm concerned (I usually hunt all day), so I did some experimenting to find something that would work for me.
I use one of the Asbell haversacks and what I do is carry a Camelbak 32 oz. bladder in one of the two large pockets. I'm able to reach in, pull out the hose, drink and put the hose back in the bag; I have no need to remove the water bladder from the bag. I've considered finding a way to jury rig the hose to the strap so it is even more readily available but so far the need hasn't outweighed my laziness.
Alternatively, I also have a Platypus Platy PlusBottle (say that 3x real fast) that is 1 Liter in size. This is basically a collapsable plastic bottle with a sport cap on the end. Works really well. The idea here is that you're only taking up as much space as needed -- you're not toting around a big hard plastic Nalgene bottle or what have you that is always taking up a lot of space whether empty or full. When empty, the Platypus bottle can literally be folded up and stuffed in your pocket, it's small. It's also malleable when full, similar to a water bladder. The only downside is that you have to take it out of the bag to drink from it.
Mine isn't as pretty as the ones you guys have but here it is in all its glory...

It's some sort of military(ish) surplus thing. Bout time for a new one as this one is about worn out.
Marc, it's wool.
I agree with some of the earlier posts, can anyone post an image of the inside of one of Teresa Asbells haversacks?? I am interested but have to save up my pennies for awhile. I have been wondering how the inside is set up. Can someone help us curious ones out??
Thomas,
Since I started this thread and also wanted to know what the inside of Teressa'a Haversacks looked like and how many compartments you would think I would of posted pics of mine by now...Our main computer tower won't power up and a computer geek said it's "barn yard did"I meant dead...I knew how to post pic's on that one but not this craptop...I'll see what boss lady know's and if she can post pics on this lap top thing ma crappy then I'll show you mines....I :help:
Thanks, and good luck with the computer.
I used this one this season, and it worked very well, I just have to get the shoulder straps for it so I could attach my light weight stand and climbing sticks.
I don't understand why it keeps copying it at full size, it was never downloaded at full size, but this happens every time I try and post more than one picture ? I just went and deleted the picture totally and then resent it again at the reduced size and it still copies it at full size ??????, oh well had to delete it.
( I hate when this happens )

QuoteAlternatively, I also have a Platypus Platy PlusBottle (say that 3x real fast) that is 1 Liter in size. [/QB]
I just saw one of those platypus bottles and now I have an idea for a new project, I'm thinking on making some kind of bag in suede or somekind of flexible leather to exactly fit the platypus botle with a carry strap to wear on the opposite shoulder the possible bag is, and drink from it, kind a like the "bota" the spanish people use to drink wine

Here's mine. A simple, no frills, military surplus canvas bag. It carries all I need.

Repurposed possibles bag. This is an Israeli paratrooper bag that I found for like $10 at a surplus shop. Pretty handy bag. Archery, small game hunting, anything.
When I need a lot of room I go with my GFA.

What size do you guys recommend in the asbell haversack? I'd like to have one of them myself.
Jason
That beaver bag is cool......did you make it?
Ron,
I bought if off of a guy at a Rendezvous in Southern Illinois about 8 years ago. He had about 50 of them all different types of leather and animal hides.
That's really neat, Thanks DuffyRP I'll have to keep my eyes open at the next Primitive event I go to!
:p
When I posted back in September, I had not yet tested out my Bag from Theresa Asbell. But now I have used it a lot and really like it. It has a lot of room and several pockets so stuff doesn't get all tangled together. It does not have the old time look like a lot of the leather and fur bags, but does have a very functional look to it. It looks nice , but more importantly, it really works for me. I highly recommend it.
I'm rather surprized, with all you guys incorporating bow quivers into your bags, that no one has utilized the Kwikee Kwiver. Easy on - easy off.

William,
You do know this thread was about Haversacks and not making a bowquiver don't you?
This what we call a "Man Purse" and it's for carrying all your gear that you would of put into a backpack or fannypack....These haversacks make it much more easy on the back and more easy to retrieve something without taking your gear off... :archer:

Here's a bag I just finished for a guy who was complaining that his store-bought bags wore out too quickly. This one is made from 9 oz bison leather with elk and deer trim. Hopefully, it will last him a little longer than the others.

Some really beautiful bags here everyone....
I have been thinking of getting one, but I need to be able to carry water, maybe 2 quarts or at least 1 quart. I don't know if it would be best to go with a bow quiver and a regular fanny pack with water bottle holders or go with a bag like these where I could just use one of the bladders or collapsible bottles and attach my quiver to it.
Any thoughts or advice?
