Title: Douglas Fir spine?
Post by: wooddamon1 on August 06, 2011, 04:13:00 PM
I'm looking into ordering some of these shafts and was wondering what spine range I'd need. I'm currently shooting a Bear Grizzly pulling 42-43# @ 27.5". I'd like to cut them to around 29", but any length short of full is acceptable. Just don't want the nocks in the dirt if I lean my bow against a tree...I use a bow quiver. I know that they offer test packs with different spines to try, but I'm kinda on a tight budget with fall fast approaching.

You don't say what point weight you're using, but I'd probably go with 55-60. You can leave them long and cut a little at a time until they fly well. If they turn out to be slightly weak when you get to 29", you can build out your sideplate a little with a toothpick or something.

Thanks SCATTERSHOT, I'll be using 125 grain points since I have about a hundred broadheads around at that weight. LOL

50#-55#'s should work good for you if you're using 125gr or 145gr tips. Any heavier tip and I'd go with the 55#-60#'s. Is that an old (vintage) Grizzly and not a new bow? Is it marked 44#@28"?

snag, it's a newer one. Couldn't pass it up for the price ($225 brand new) it's marked 45# @ 28".
Thanks a lot for the input! That woodie thread got me all hopped up to make some more but I've never tried the Surewood shafts...

You'll love the Surewoods, for sure! Sorry..... If it is a new bow they are cut past center and with the strike plate it should be a center cut bow. So you could go with 60#-65#'s.

Thanks snag, I think I'll put in my order with Braveheart right now and do 'em up the cheap and easy way. Kinda been side-tracked lately working up some batches of carbons to fool around with. Just ain't the same. Now back to my first love...   :archer2:

Just ordered some 60-65# Surewoods from Surewood shafts because Braveheart has them as a back-ordered item. Had to get "Hunter grade" because that spine was OUT there too in the premium grade. I did however order some of those A.M.G. feathers from Braveheart. Thanks again for the replies, guys.   :campfire:

Post the results of your efforts when you're done. Love to see them and hear about it. The Hunter grade are a good shaft. They will work for you!
