Went for a quick turtle hunt. Really I was trying to break in the new boots and let the dogs run around.
I had passed up about a dozen carp and seen many peculiar things making weeds move but out of the corner of my eye I saw the definitive motion of live game. It was quick, but I noticed a good size turtle head out of the water eating leaves. I shot fast and hit him in the neck at about 8 yards.
The bow is a "Special" made by Pearson. 50 lbs at 28". The point was barely poking through the other side. I just finished cleaning him at 12:50 am, going to bed so I can stump shoot early! His stomach was full of leaves!

Nice! I'll have to try that :archer:
That makes me hungry for some turtle soup. Good shooting!
congrats man great shooting, skinning them is not easy, but they are tasty.
Holy Cow! That pretty cool! Nothing like that in Oregon.
Nice shootin sir. Good find
Cool!!! Good shot, Charlie.
Skin the neck for a handle wrap and the feet for some cool decorations. Then enjoy some good soup.
Oh, and clean up the shell for a nice addition to the hearth.
:archer:
2X what Mudd said!
Very cool Charlie! That should make for some fine eating and some great keepsakes with the shell, feet, etc.
Nice looking boots too
Way to go Charlie!!!
I know you earned it. Persistence pays off.
Way to go.!!..
When I was growing up in Illinois we used to catch Snappers pretty regular in the summer time. Alot of work cleaning them but the meat is delicious.

Thanks for all the great words guys :campfire:
Chuck, That's exactly what I was thinking. Do you know what the best way to "tan" the hide is? I have all he skin. The tail could make a great knife sheath. I Cleaned him with your Mora clippers!
I always save the claws as well, they make great decorations. They polish up real nice.
Turtle soup!!
Nice shot!
Good shot!Enjoy the soup. You know, put a strap on that shell and it would make a cool helmet. ;) You going to Muzzy?
Well done Charlie congrats
Congrats!
Bisch
man that is cool. Good shootin!!
Cool beans, great shot and yep they are a pain to clean. I use a hammer and chisel to pop them loose from their shell at the head and the tail. I also don't skin them but scald in boiling water and scrape the skin off. Chris
Congrats Charlie,Way to go man!!Thats a big one!!
Nice job Charlie and congrats.
:campfire:

Nice tuttle! :)

Nice.....Shells make great clocks, you can get a clock kit at a craft store.
just curious what boots are those?
Good work Charlie that's cool.
Charlie, I think you could contact VanDyk supply for some info on reptile tanning. I am sure they have some kind of stuff to do it at home.
Did you have a frosty in the can cooler while dressing the critter? did you take any pics with the gear and turtle?
 :clapper:
Only had 3 pictures left on the camera so no cleaning or gear pictures. I was fortunate enough to have a neighbor come and take the few pictures I have.
I did have a peppy le'peu walk right behind me as I was cleaning turtle.
Chuck the can cooler is great as long as I keep it in my hand. Once I set it down it dissapears. What ever that camo pattern is, it works.
Ernest, The boots are made by Meindl. So far I am quite pleased.
Tomorrow I will be slow cooking the legs and tail like I would ribs on the grill. All the rest of the meat will be used in a soup or stew.
Looks like a snapper & great for turtle soup. Tastes better than chicken.
Congratulations Charlie, great job!

That is the same pattern we use in our felted wool vests.
It has been a good many years since I had me some turtle, My buddies Dad cooked some every year for us. Mighty tasty.
CONGRATS!
Nice job Charlie!
Nice Shootin!
Somebody brought home supper!!!!
Troy
I made Turtle Stew tonight with the scraps.
Let me tell you, Turtles Beware :readit:
If the other parts come out half as well slow cooked and smoked tomorrow, I might have to quit hunting deer for turtles :dunno:
Good job! Say hi to the Mrs. for me.

Really cool!!!
Well Done!
Thanks for the good comments guys.
Dave: I will as soon as she gets back from her vacation with her sister and grandma.
I am eating grilled turtle right now. I slow cooked it for 3 hours like I would ribs. It has great flavor and is moist and juicy but is a bit chewy.
I think next time I may try the crock pot.
Casey, let me know, I would love to shoot with you at least once more before you leave us.
