Title: Ontario Bear Hunt 2011 (we're back-pic heavy)
Post by: leatherneck on August 05, 2011, 08:24:00 PM
Well next week(8-13-11) myself, sunny, and a couple training wheel guys are headed to Ontario to hunt some black bears. I'm going to try to do a follow along from now until we get home. I'm hoping to have service at camp so I can update everyone daily on my laptop. Things are going good thus far so hopefully this will be a great trip. So pull up a chair, grab a beer, and follow us from Ohio to the Canadian woods. I'll try to make it interesting until we actually get on stand.
Here we go.............

Our hunt was booked last year with Kapriveroutfitters in northern Ontario. Peter Martin is the owner. Peter is a dog breeder and professional wolf guide. A couple years ago Peter had a client(Tim Wells) who has his own TV show (Relentless Pursuit). Tim filmed his bear hunt at Peters place. Tim advised Peter that he had some great bear hunting and could make some money before wolf season opened up. So last year the camp was open for bear hunters. They killed 16 bear out of 18 hunters. The other 2 was waiting on a bigger bear but saw bear. Peter informed me these guys killed some big bear too. So kapriver bear hunting was formed. So I booked a hunt for the first week of 2011.
Peter offers 47 baits that he baits every 3 days from May1st to end of season. A week prior to your hunt he will pick out the 12 best baits and bait these everyday. He will only let 6-8 in camp at once. We only have 4 during our week.Peter also just got 3 more BMU and is going to offer an outpost camp next year.
So theres the history about the place we are going. Now to the hunt.

Any good hunt starts with preperation. Half the fun of going on a hunt is getting things prepared. Heres a couple of me making my bear arrows. GT 35/55 full length,50grain brass,100 bh insert,160 snuffer. Total arrow 605gr.That ought to make a nice hole huh?

Good luck Mike! I can't wait until I get a chance to bear hunt again. What bow(and specs) are you hunting with? What shape do you chop your feathers. Do you bring any secret bear lures with you?

Mike,

You will be in good hands with Peter. I have known and hunted with Peter for many many years. I was his first wolf client when he started guiding for wolves. Hard to find nicer folks than Peter and his wife Terry. Have a great time!

Now every hunt begins months before with practice. I usually shoot my bow year round so usually no issues there. This year has been different. I had shoulder surgery on May 11th so I was down for two months. Now normally I would be back into things after a week or two. But this year I made the complete switch from recurve to longbow. Although not as accurate with my lb as my curves(at least not yet), I'm determined to hunt LB this season. So I had ordered a Liberty Contender(64" 53@27) several months ago and wasn't able to start shooting until around 7-1-11. Had to drop a few pounds in draw weight cause of the shoulder but 53 will be plenty. I feel confident up to 20 yards and thats fine by me. All my stands at home are set for 15-18 yards anyhow. So practice is what I have been doing.

I chop mine at 5 1/4" shield. We have used chicken grease and donuts in the past and the grease worked wonderfully. The guide already uses this stuff so I dont have to bring it. I do have a little something/something up my sleeve to try. It's an odd mixture but a 200 year old man told me about it.    :bigsmyl:    Remind me later and I'll let you know if it worked or not.

SUNNY- Feel free to step in at any time. This ain't poundcake ya know.

Thanks MIke. How did you settle in that shape/size. I just had a custom Lil Chopper made that looks close to that. I'll be after you about your 200 year old secret, I always like to try something different as long as my guide doesn't mind. My good luck bait was pink Peeps, those sugar coated marshmallows! What size bears do you expect to see? Any color phase?

Good luck on your hunt.  I will be bear hunting myself in September here in my home state of Michigan.  My wife and I spent the day today setting up three bait sites and put up our tree stands.  We are baiting with sweets mostly.  Will be shooting a new VyperKhan longbow made for me by my brother Chris Cox of habu bows.  Arrows are 340 axis with weight tubes, 8gr an inch, 30 inch arrows.  Going to shoot a snuffer.

-owlbait- I just liked the shield is all. The size seemed to help steer my 160 snuffers best. Peter is really open about what we do to our own baits. I may get me a couple packs of those pinl peeps too!!!! No color phase but they say the bears are pretty big up that way. I'm looking for a 300 or better on this trip. We'll see soon enough.

-habujohn- Good luck to you and your wife as well.

I figured a new hunt needed a new camera to go along with it. Those that know me know that I tinker with homebru trail cameras. So I decided to make an IR one for the trip. The cam has been tested and working good. Just need to add the 3d camo and it's ready. Hopefully I'll get some good bear pics to show you guys. The Pelican case should hold off the bear teeth.....I hope.

Pretty simple build. It's a Sony P-41 hacked IR. Attached to a Simple Sniper II board.

The bags are packed, killing the bull with my bow, and the beer is on ice. Sounds to me like we are ready to rock. Now if I can get Sunny to Ohio in one piece we will be in good shape.

Saturday morning and we'll be on our way!!!!

Should have a few more pics on Friday as things get closer.

Not so fast everyone! We are still very much alive and kicking. But I can't say so much for other things.hint,hint.

Due to some technical issues with downloading pics, you all will have to wiat until Sunday to get the full story. The action has been hot and heavy and there have been several bears seen.

So be patient and I'll chat more when I get home.

Honey I cant believe you traded away my new tractor for the Caribbean!

Until Sunday.

Oh, Friday, 8-12-11 I meet up with my old buddy Michael(sunnyhillarcher)as he drove up from S.C. It's always good to see friends again. Hunts with friends is what makes the memories, the kill is just a bonus.
Anyhow, get Michael to the house for a cold beer and some pizza and catch up on things. We finished packing up the trailor and went to bed early.

The other guys (Jeff(wheelie guy),Rob (forestcreature) show up at 0530 on the 13th and help load the remaining gear. On schedule,we depart for Canada at 0600.

We all ventured out to our bait sites to check and pick baits. 3 of 4 had been hit the night before which was a good sign.

Here is my stand that I would also call home for an extended period of time.

Lucky me,everybody else had the metal ladder stands. I pick the one with a pallet in the tree.   :knothead:

Now I always bring my own stand whenever I go hunting. I let the guide talk me into using this stand instead of my own. Plus,I'm a whitetail hunter and being only 10 feet off the ground was just not what I was used to.

Bad move..............for my butt that is.

Here is a pic of my bait barrel from the stand. 13 yards to the barrel.

Keep in mind our baits were 25 miles one way from camp. 7 on main road and 18 on a dirt road. My poor black truck paid the price...

Yes,the possibility of sitting 15 hours on that wooden platform made me wish I would have hung my Gorilla.  :banghead:

Monday 8-15-11 0600

Opening day found us heading to our stands. We took one quad and the truck and headed out. Once at the crossroads, myself and Michael would take the bike and the other guys would continue with the truck.

I dropped Michael at his bait trail head and headed to mine. Heres me checking the barrel and throwing more bait in. A little depressing that it had not been hit last night but thats hunting.

I mentioned my secret bait early on. Not much of a secret but something I wanted to use. If you look on the ground around the bait you will see the big white dots. Those are giant marshmallows that are soaked in  vanilla extract. These wound up working better than planned.  :bigsmyl:

My wait would be short lived. At about 0620 just as daylight set in I hear a noise coming from the pines to the right of the barrel.

Now those who have bear hunted know that it's odd for a bear to make noise coming into a bait. I dont know how they do it with the thick forage and all,but one minute they are not there, the next they are. Like ghosts.

Anyhow, I hear this noise coming to me so I grab my bow. Figuring maybe I have a clumsy bear. Through the trees I see a black flash on the ground. Bear foot for sure......

My heart is pumping through my chest as I await my quary. He sure as heck was taking his time. I check my wind puffer and the wind was in my face. All is good, now just wait Mike.

I stand and wonder, how big is he? will I shoot him? Is it maybe a cub? Will my shot be true?

I catch a glimpse at the base of the pines and see that black paw looking thing again. Then all at once he steps out!!!!!

My excitement went from an adrenaline high to a giant release of a huge breath. All I was thinking now was please dont spray me in this short stand.
Old peppy gave me a good rush for sure.

After peppy ate on some of my marshmallows he left me to wait some more.
Thank God for the grinnys or my day would have been longer than it already was. I enjoyed watching them play around the bait while I waited.

At about 11:30 the guide came in to check on me and freshen up the site with some chicken grease. A welcome sight cause I had to stretch my legs a bit.

10 minutes later I was back on my stand....

During our chat the guide informed me that one of the other hunters in our group(not a trad guy) had stuck a good bear. Heres a trail cam pic of that bear the night before.

Unfortunately this bear was never recovered. This is just to show you that these guys have some nice bear up there. They had one weigh in at 470 last year. That is a full size 55 gallon drum there.

Back to my story.......

The hours ticked by and I started to get sleepy. Not to mention this stand was THE most uncomfortable stand I have ever sat.
Because the seat was at a different angle than the platform I could not lean against the tree. So I started standing on the seat in the right hand corner and leaning against the tree. Keep in mind my bow was hanging lower than me now.
Again, this would play an important roll later...

The day rolled on with no sightings of any bear for me. My butt hurt and I was getting uncomfortable. I once again climbed up on the seat to lean against the tree for some relief.
At about 7:00pm (13 hours on stand)I pulled my phone from my pocket to see if I had any service to text Michael. Just wanted to see if he was doing any good. No service as usual. When all of a sudden I look 5 yards from the stand to my left and there is a big black object.
Yes, this time it was a bear!!!!!!
Cursing myself for allowing technology to let my guard down all I could do was wait. My 64" longbow was within yards from her. I could just picture her chewing on my bottom limb.    :scared:

But,instead of paying any mind to me,she walked over to the bucket on the ground and sniffed for a second. Then guess what, she went straight for the marshmallows.     :bigsmyl:

Not a monster bear, nor was it a little one either. Bigger than any I have shot to date.I decided that I was taking this bear. While she chewed on those marshmallows her butt was facing me. Time to get the bow in my hands. Keep in mind I'm still standing on my seat. Knowing for sure that if I tried to step down on the platform a creek or moan from the stand would send this bear running. So if I was going to shoot this bear then it would have to be from the seat. I actually practiced drawing my bow from this perch earlier should the occassion arise. Boy I'm glad I did.

I reached down to get the bow and surprisingly was able to get it off the hook.

Thinking I might actually pull this off I slowly eased the bow up to my bow hand. Almost there I kept my eyes on the bear. Just as my bow was almost in my shooting hand I bumped the bottom limb on the platform. CLANK!!!!!! To my surprise those marshmallows must have been real good cause she didn't even look up.

Bow in hand I just had to wait on a good broadside shot. Lady luck was looking after me cause all the marshmallows were gone except one that a bird tried to pick up and dropped it behind the barrel. The bear went after this last marshmallow. The good part was her head was behind the barrel with her full body exposed. Slighty quartering away I picked a spot slightly back so the arrow would go up into the lungs.

Practice took over and the string came right to my face. Before I knew it the yellow fletching disappeared right where I was looking.
The bear took off and all was quiet.

I sat back and took in all that had just happened. I cant believe I just pulled that off.

But was my shot true? Was the spot I picked correct? Did I go to far back and miss the lungs? I hate quartering away shots!

Me getting down checking the spot.

I briefly looked for my arrow but couldn't find it. Now I'm wondering if I even had a pass thru.

I did find wet stuff right at the shot site and thought this was good. Keep in mind that I'm colorblind and cant see blood. So all I can look for is wetness.

I walk out to the road to gather my thoughts and see Michael coming down the road to me. He walked 2 miles to get to me.Here I thought we both had one down. But Michael had a bear in twice but elected to pass on it. His winds started to swirl so he decided to get down and not ruin anything since this was the first day. I was disappointed that his hunt got cut short the first night but welcomed a pair of eyes to help me track.

After going over the story with Michael we went back to the bush.

Michael looking over the scene.

I took Michael to the spot where I found the wetness. I told him that I have blood. He laughed then and is probably laughing now as he reads this. He said Mike, thats not blood,it's grease splatter.
Now I'm really disappointed. But right behind the barrel we did find blood. The 160 snuffer did it's job. And two yards away we saw this:

Now where was I?

Oh yea,the trail. After finding the arrow me and Michael went after her.
Folks, let me tell you something about a 160 Snuffer. Bob Morrison was right when he said it would be a short trail. After a mere 30 yards we found my bear. Lady luck was really with me. The arrow went straight in her right side around the ribs and exited through the back part of the left shoulder. Liver and lungs were toast.

She did give me the death growl so I new she was dead. But that would have killed the story.

Michael has a couple good pics of me approaching the bear and we'll get those up shortly. But here's my girl.

I want to thank Michael for his help in recovering my bear. Also want to thank Rob and Jeff for a good time hunting.

Congrats on a great bear.  How did the other guys in your group fare?  Two weeks and I will also be out there chasing bruins.

Unfortunately the 2 wheelie guys wounded a couple bear.
Michael(sunnyhillarcher), the other trad guy with me, passed on a bear on the first day.
Everybody saw bear within shooting distance.
