Title: MONSTER PIG HUNT....Where Would You Start?
Post by: Nala on August 04, 2011, 03:10:00 PM
Hey all,

I love the hunt threads that you all post here.  It gives me a chance to hunt vicariously through you.  Whether they be elk, moose, sheep, deer, bear or whatever, I love 'em all, but I am especially fond of the HOG HUNT threads.

I just finished checking out the Tejon ranch thread and was amazed at the location and the GIANT PIG taken.  AMAZING!

That started me thinking about something, where would you go if you were on a mission to take BIG, MONSTER sized and MEAN AS HECK HOGS?

I know there are several states that have HOGS, but is there one that has BIGGER and NASTIER hogs than the others?  I can attest that there are BIG HOGS here in south western Florida.  Not that I have had a chance to hunt them, I wish I did.  My neighbor puts out feed for hogs and birds and every evening he has a black hog that comes for the dinner bell.  He used to have a BIG RED one too, but it was hit by a car.
I have also seen pics of a hunt that took place in TURKEY (I think) and they had a dead hog that looked to be the size of a VW BUS.  It was just HUGE and GNARLY.  I know camera angles can fool you, but this was a big hog for sure.  Now I can't go to Turkey to hunt, naturally, I was just throwing that in.

So if it were one of your goals to bring in a true GIANT HOG, where would you go?  For me, it would also ADD bonus points if he were all scarred up, had big ole cutters, and looked like some of those hogs that were in the 2nd Silence of the Lambs movie.

Where does your quest begin?

Thanks for your time.

most really BIG hogs are feral or a mix.....I have hunted hogs in a lot of places and if you see a true 300# wild hog, it is a monster(not my favorite description).....I have saw a few ferals that would go over 600#.....just my observations......just for your info, one of our group killed a 250# hog not too far out of Punta Gorda back in 2001.....most of the other pigs killed on that hunt were 100# to 140#.....

There's a ton of public land in Florida. That's where I'd start.
From there, I'd go north to Georgia & east to S.Carolina.

The mountian hogs up around North Carolina tend to be smaller & leaner. Swamp hogs is what you want.

Louisiana has some monsters, as do Mississippi, southern Missourri & Arkansas.

If you want real adventure, Chile & Argentina apparrently have some freakin' HUGE pigs. Of course there's always Australia.
Poland, Turkey, The Czech Republic, Romania, Hungary, Latvia, Bosnia & Croatia all have record class tuskers (by that I mean 500#+)

Texas is probably the most accessible place to hunt swine, but you'll be hard pressed to find a real toad. Every once in a while you may hear of a biggun coming out of Texas though.

One thing to remember though; big gnarly old hogs taste like sinewy crap. 50-100#ers are the best eaters  ;)

Southern Germany, I saw some pigs down there that were huge and perfectly proportioned. Chris

Looking at this years regs, I would guess that this is no longer an option.
The TWRA in their infinite wisdom have banned private land hog hunting in Tennessee.

Don't know about "mean" hogs...but for big hogs, BIG cutters and FUN hog hunting - go to Australia.  Killed 4 big'uns over there while I was buff hunting - BIG cutters.  The best part....these hogs were unhunted so you could stalk them during the daytime and get close - my average shot was well under 10 yards.  Its a long ways to go...but if you are a REAL fan of pig hunting....

I'd go back to Oz just to chase pigs.

If i could go any where in the world to hunt that one big hog i would head for Russia. The cold there makes the hogs get big to hold in the body heat just like the far north here and the whitetails. but sence i dont see a Russia hog hunt in my near future i will stick to Tejon Ranch.

Good luck on your quest and if you are in Florida dang man get out and chase some hogs, i would love to get to your state and chase some through the palmetoes (spelling)

The pictures make it look like you shot him a bunch of times and had a nice group.

Tn mountain hogs are Russian, smaller than coastal pigs, but all head and shoulders. No calico looking pigs here. Their red when small and striped and turn black in a few months. I think their meaner than coastal and swamp pigs.
Not high population numbers and tuff hunting.
Tn closed hog hunting on private land, except land owner.
Only a few hunts on wma's now.
They closed it on private due to most pig population expansion was due to hog hunters releasing pigs on leased land or land they did not own so they could hunt them later.

Come to Tejas, you can Hunt Hogs 24 hrs a day 365. In S Tejas, you can Hunt Javelina, and Hogs, plus see some very nice Deer too. And Yes, we do have Big Pigs, I came face to face with a Big Black one like Wtpops, in the S Tejas brush... No I didn't get a shot on him, but we were eye ball to eye ball. Tu Compadres, Sutty
