Hello everyone, I'm new here at tradgang and wanted to say hello. I'm new at traditional archery and have found it to be alot of fun. It all started off about 1 1/2 months ago when my son came home from Boy Scouts with a Hickory Longbow,I could've bought one also but said I didn't need anything like that. Well I ended up finding a cabinet shop that had some planks of hickory, and built my first longbow.I couldnt find a string so guess what I bought a spool of B50 and made myself a flemish string (the internet comes in handy sometimes). I have around 15.00 and 30 hours and feel proud of what i had done. We took Some of the Scout Troop to ETAR last weekened. and here i was with this homemade longbow and it was so cool no-one judged me cause of this stick i was shooting instead people wanted to check it out and ask me what it was made of, how i carved it out, how does it shoot etc. I want to thank all the people involved in triditional archery and all the websites with info on building longbows and to Our Scout Master of Troop 281 for getting the boys involved more in archery. You're gonna make some selfbow guys real proud. Any specs?
Welcome from Kentucky
it's 72" long w/ draw weight is 40-45 lbs at 28" 7 1/2" brace height it's not a real fast bow but gets the job done.I'm thinking of adding either bamboo or glass backing. Laid off and money is tight so it will have to do for now.
Welcome to the gang!
Hi there-Hap

Welcome to the gang!
I'm glad you're here. Congrats on the self bow. Good job.
Word of caution...definitely do not do any searches about pretty bows. Your bank account will suffer and your wife will give you that look, at the very least.
Just stop now and build your own bows and be happy.
For your own good.
Welcome to tradgang and nice bow
Welcome. I should have tried making my own first. As stated above the pretty ones get expensive! Nice work!
Welcome aboard! Trad archery is very addicting!Shoot some pics to my email addy and I'll post em up for ya or feel free to p.m. me for help.
I'll see if the picture posts this time, Ill figure it out one of these times. I can build myself a bow but can't seem to post a picture, go figure! Welcome! Welcome!! Welcome!!!
Welcome! That bow looks sweet. The Tiller looks good too. Hats-off to you Sir! You've made a better start in Trad Archery than I did. It's an honor to have you join our campfire.
What did you do for arrows?
Anouther member who turned me on to trad gang loaned me some gold tips that were to short for him for now.
What is your draw length? I would be glad to help you get started. I love it that you made your own bow to start out. I will give you a half dozen Carbon Express 3050 Thunder Storms if you can use them. They measure 28" and I've found them to be nice arrows. I shoot them out of 45 to 50 pound bows. I just fletched-up a bunch for Denton, then couldn't go. You're welcome to them.
the tiller isnt perfect, but close enough for what it is. It shoots good, balanced, doesnt vibrate your hand and has a nice steady/even pull to it. So it's a winner, now all i have to do is get used to not having sites and training wheels.
28" arrows will work the ones i'm using now are 27 3/4'and 29 1/2" tip to tip. Money is tight with loosing my job so if your willing to part with some arrows it sure would help me out.
Welcome glad to have you as part of the family
do any of you guys know what is the best backing and what kind of glue should be used?

Those Scouts look to be having a good time. Good on you George. Some of those boys look pretty strong, I think I have something extra to send with those arrows George. I'm sure you will find a use for it. :bigsmyl:
:bigsmyl: :wavey: :campfire: :coffee: :archer2: WELCOME........♠
Welcome! :campfire: :archer2:
Yes the scouts had a wonderful time,as did I. Wish I could take credit for taking them but I was just along as a leader and a father. And will be there again, the scouts are counting down the days till next year.
We at troop 281 can only take credit for a very small part in the boys accomplishment in building up the skill and gear required to end up at ETAR. Campton Archery, 3rivers Rudderbows and many more here on Trad-Gang helped the boys get to where they are now. Let's not forget how much work the Scouts did in a very short time. My hats off to them all, George you have a lot to be proud of as well you traveled a narrow path many chose not to take including me. A self made bow is a long way from having a bowyer make a bow for you, Someday I will put my tip down and pick up a stave and do what so few do, build my own character in a bow. I look forward to next year's shoot and many in-between, I know I will not have to look far for shooting companions. Working with these Scouts is what it's all about.

Welcome from NC
Thanks Danny for the arrows, and this Bow kit is beautiful, this world is a better place cause of all the wonderful tradgangers!
Welcome and good job the whole way around, especially on getting those boys shootin'
I think me and my buddy sat next to you guys on Sunday on the lawn for the giveaways. We definitely sat next to a troop.
And another one gets the bug. :archer:
Welcome to Trad Gang!
George you are in trouble now, that's how it starts. The next thing you know you will be shooting with the lights on and Melissa will have to drug you and Tyler to get you in the house.
Todd, if we were the troop next to you my son won the beautiful knife from EIEIO brothers.

George that bow came out beautiful! I like that riser design and I see you even added a lamination in the riser and tips. Very Nice Indeed. Well Done my friend! You certainly have a natural talent. :notworthy: :clapper: :archer2:
It must be a great feeling to take those rough, raw materials and turn them into such a beautiful bow.
When I get straightened out from this Hurricane I have something else to send you that I think one of those Scouts might be able to use.
my makeshift hot box 160 - 170 deg. average temp (http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m551/surefirespider/2011-08-11123117.jpg)

It is great to have newcomers join the clan. Welcome, you could not find a better sport than trad archery or a better group of folks than you will meet on Trad Gang.
