Title: Arrow Selection
Post by: Blue Tick on August 03, 2011, 02:01:00 PM
Looking for some new arrows for a new trad setup.

Bow will be 28/42#.

What would be a good spine to look at and point weight? Should I consider brass inserts? What about brand of arrow?

type of bow?
Draw length?
point weight you are wanting?
what type of arrow are you wanting to shoot?

If you are wanting to shoot carbon I suggest giving Shawn Leonard a pm.  Maybe 600 spine 29.5" with 150-175 point weight?  Shawn will get you real close.

Carbon? Aluminum? Wood?

I like the Gold Tip Trad Hunter carbons... I would start with the 35/55, and, using Stu's calculator, figure how long you may want them, how the heavy points, possibly use some internal weights (entered as "footings" in the calculator)...

It's a take down longbow.

Draw length is 28"

I was figuring my points at 125-145gr.

I would prefer to shoot carbons.

Any place I can find a calculator to use. Pretty new to trad and all the arrow selection bit!

The link to Stu Miller's free calculator. But, all the info put into the boxes has to be correct or it won't work.

Beman MFX Classic 600"s or Easton St. Epic 600's
around 29" should fly well.

I had seen in another thread that this is a Fedora... Mike's recurves are cut about -1/8" (past center)... not sure about the longbow.  (If it is cut past center, it gives you a little more leeway with spine.)

With the incomplete data you've provided, I'll make a guess that you could start with this:

Gold Tip Traditional Hunter 35/55 cut to 29.5" w/ 3x5" feathers and a 150 grain point.  (This is roughly 10 gpp with a FOC of about 16%.)

Read the instructions for Stu's calculator carefully and try to provide all of the correct data... it really works well.

Thanks guys. I know the info is incomplete, but bow is not in hand as of yet. I trying some preliminary guessing.

.600s and if not cut past center and you draw 28"s you will need to keep them kind of long 29.5"s and at least 175 up front for point weight, use a 50 grain brass insert and play with points from 125 to 175 grains. I am shooting .600s with 190 up front cut to 29.5"s(my draw 28.5"s)out of a 38# high performance recurve and get perfect flight. Shawn

Ok....decided on the bow! I ended up getting a Bob Lee 3pc recurve, 49#@28". I am actually drawing 29" according to JJ at their shop. On the arrows. Myself and JJ ended up with a GT 3555 full length, with 3 4" feathers and a 125gr point. After bare shaft tuning, these seemed to fly great and what he suggested I buy for the bow.

My question is, are these enough for this bow? Total weight is right at 375gr, which seems very light to me for a trad bow. I'm still trying to learn proper setups on trad bows and want to make sure I get this right.

Anyone have any other suggestions?

At your draw length, you'll be pulling between 51#-52#. At, 51#-52#, with a 375 grain arrow, you're basically shooting a 7.3-7.2 GPP (grain per pound) arrow. That's pretty light. You might want to check with Bob Lee and see if they recommend an arrow that light shot from their bows.

Also, that light weight of an arrow may make the bow loud upon arrow release.

A lot of bowhunters shoot 10-12 GPP (grains per pound arrows.

I was at their shop when this arrow was made up! Rob's son JJ is the one who said it would work great. I am worried about it being so light myself!

You can always add weight tubes to those arrows to bump up the weight closer to 10 gpp/  the 5 gr per inch weight tubes should get you very close!

Does that affect spine of the arrow? I have heard it does and heard it doesn't!

Vapor 2000 carbons, cut to 29", 225-250 grains up front. You can also look at other carbons that are .600.  Just remember to load up the FOC and spend some time tuing the arrow.
