It's that time of year to get our fall plans in order!
The annual Ohio Traditional Deer Hunt is moving to October this year due to some other obligations in November.
Just a little picture or two to refresh our memories

*************************************************
DATES:
October 19th - 23rd. I will be setting up on Wednesday night and breaking camp on Sunday evening. That means we will have Thursday morning to Sunday evening or afternoon to hunt.
*************************************************
LOCATION:
Go to the site listed below for the map of the AEP area. Look for Campground K off of SR83 & T13. It is surrounded by public hunting with no reservation required. You just have to sign in when you get there.
Here is the link to the map;
http://www.aep.com/environmental/recreation/recland/pdf/ReCLandMap.pdf
*************************************************
PERMIT:
You will need to download, print and sign your free permit to be legal. You need to keep this with you while hunting. No need to send it in anywhere.
Go to this site for the permit:
http://www.aep.com/environmental/recreation/recland/permit.aspx
*************************************************
FOOD:
I am hoping to provide meals and serve as camp host this year if I have been lucky enough to get a couple deer early in the season. However, we all know my luck, so plan to bring your own food or even some to share with others. On Thursday night I am planning to provide bear stew for all those who are in camp if you want to partake. I will keep you updated as to whether or not I can provide more dinners. Possibly we can have volunteers this year for each night to help out with/provide dinner? Let me know on that idea.
***********************************************
FIREWOOD:
Bring cut up pallets or other wood that is from areas that are not infected with the wood borer. For instance, it is safe to transport wood from the same counties we are hunting in Meigs, Guernsey, Noble or another non-quaranteened areas of SE Ohio. You do have to cover the wood during transport.
***********************************************
SHIRTS;
T-shirts will be black with white logo and lettering. Here is the design for this year. I am thinking about a full back with a small lapel design as well.
Here is the design for the shirt this year;
FRONT LAPEL AREA OF SHIRT
(http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd107/miller_cem/P1060214-1.jpg)
BACK OF SHIRT
(http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd107/miller_cem/P1060213.jpg)
I know the pics show black on white, but the shirts will be opposite! Get your order for a shirt to me ASAP so I can get the order submitted in time. Cost should be the same as previous years roughly. PM me with your order.
*************************************************
AMENITIES
There are outhouses in the camping area, but no electricty. There is also a pump to draw up well water. You are permitted to bring a generator if desired. Obviously, you need a tent and sleeping bags. Also, bring some field points for fooling around or practice!
**For those of you who have been to camp in previous years, I would like to set up further back in the camp grounds. This will allow for everyone to set up tents in closer proximity to each other. I am looking at having a sign made up that will hold up better than the ones posted in previous years.
Look forward to hearing from you all!
:campfire:
Sounds like fun. That is really close to me. I'll have to check those dates. :archer:
I have fished over there at Blue Rock State Park. Some big deer over there.
This does look like a great time. Thanks to those who put events like this together! I know first hand they take more work that what is transparent.
I will likewise check the dates. Are pop-up campers a possibility there?
I'd say count me in, but like others I have to check dates and with the better half first.
Troy
Pop ups are fine. Some folks have regular campers there. You have to be careful in some spots not to bottom out a trailer or camper, but some people have them.
Ill be there again.
WooooHoooo you know I'll be there!!
Put me down for the Saturday. I might come in Friday after work.
I am stoked--can you guys tolerate a female hunter in your midst?
Wish I could be there Charlie! Good luck this year. Here's some of the crew from last year! Charlies the good looking one on the right! (http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r224/REALVTer/056.jpg)
Hey Charlie, I PM'd you too..I will be there..sounds great. Fred
Oh ya I'll take a shirt too. Size- lg thanks
Hey CHarlie I'll be there for the week so I"ll set up on the friday or saturdaqy before you get there. BTW MEDIUM for me. Lol if you do any long sleeves I want a large. Anyone is welcome to come early and keep me company. I will be deer hunting and hunting squirrel, woodcock and grouse, in the afternoons with a shotgun. So feel free to bring something other than your bow. If you're coming for the first time bring a dish that can be added to a pot luck, we usually eat dinner as a group and its always good to share. BTW HUNTRYX You are more than welome in camp, as long as you can deal with the way boys talk when they're in the woods. Lol
BTW There are 60,000 Huntable acres so get on the aep site print off the map and then get on google eath and scout your butts off. There is alot of terrain to cover and we'll help you as best as possible, but we can't give up all the goodies.
Fred,
Are you coming to both hunts? The Trad hunt and the one I scheduled for you?
Susan,
We are more than happy to have you or in camp. I will make the boys behave! :help:
For the new guys and gals,
We will help you all out with hunting spots. I might have to get back down there and get to work on a few more locations.
:campfire:
yep
We are going to miss you Greg. Great pic!
Rob,
I was wondering if you would see this before I sent you a text. You in for the whole hunt?
Jim(heydeerman),
It might work out better for you to come on Friday. You never know who will or will not be in camp if you get there Satuday morning. Most mornings we are out hunting before or just at daybreak.
Like I said before though, if I have a couple deer before then, I plan to play camp host! Wish me luck....
hey matt this is brad i will be there on monday night again. i will have my pyramid and stove this year so i will not freeze out. taking vacation so i will be there the 17-26. good to share but i would not want to be responsible for tryin to feed you for the week. a guy would go broke. :) charlie put me down for a tshirt size xl.
I suspect Dylan and I will be there for part of the time. I'd ask him but he's currently doing this (he's the redhead):
... at USMC OCS, so our communication is a bit more limited right now than I'd like. I'm guessing he's going to want a large t-shirt and I'd like a XL but let me confirm that with him first, please.
October sounds like a good time to me. Thanks for getting this together again, Charlie. Hey - is there a thread somewhere about your bear? If so, I missed it.
Let Dylan know we support his efforts and are VERY proud of him! He has grown into a fine man. I just watched a documentary on OCS Monday. It isn't a walk in the park...
 :clapper:
Here is a link to my bear story. One heck of a fun hunt!

Here is a link to everyone's stories that went on the hunt.

Charlie,
Cleared it with the boss so count me in. I'll take a large shirt. If possible let me know when your going to scout and I'll try to meet you there. Would much rather know what to expect than run blind. I also have quite a bit of deer meat left over from last season. Since the boss doesn't care for it I have trouble using everything from one season to the next.
Troy
Troy,
Glad to hear you are in! I will let you know next time we head down to scout. Do you have steaks, roast or burger? We could use some for dinner one night...
Also, I will bring a large can of gravy if anyone wants to take care of the biscuits. We can have biscuits and gravy for breakfast Thurs or Fri morning.
charlie, give me a shout if you come over to scout i will meet you over there to have a look around. i only live 15 minutes from the campground but i dont really know a whole lot about the area over there other than fishing. i can throw my canoe on and bring it down if you want to try to get in and look at some places that way also. brad
What's biscuits and gravy? :bigsmyl:
you know you loved my biscuits and sausage gravy. :)
Greg is going to drive down just for the breakfast and he knows it!
TTT for folks who need to come.
Bear thred == epic. I sent a copy of that to Dylan - pretty sure he will enjoy. That may be bedtime reading to the other officer candidates or something. :D
Going to check our schedules today to make sure I'm not oncall that week or anything. Got to get back to scouting the area from the air. :)
Charlie,
I have just about all cuts of meat (except backstrap). Even have acouple sticks of summer sausage left. I'll bring enough to cover a couple of meals.
Troy
If i can get it done early this year i could bring my smoker down and we all can have a BBQ. (http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj10/longbowben/DSC06891.jpg)
(http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj10/longbowben/DSC06886.jpg)So everyone pray i can bust the big boy the first week of bow season he has been making a fool of me for 2 seasons now.
Ben,
If it means BBQ.... I'll pray as much as you need! I think the food might be better than the hunting this year!
I'm up for eating.
Hi all im planning on being down there that fri before n stay n till thur. have to work that weekend. hope see you all there.
Jim,
Sounds good. We'll see you there bud. I may have to get down there the Friday before and set up my stuff. Then I could just show up the following Wednesday. Hmmm...
It's amazing how the words deer and BBQ can bring out the neighborhood. :-) :-)
Troy
Food schedule...
I am cooking dinner Thursday night(bear stew) and Breakfast Friday Morning(Biscuits and gravy).
Troy,
You want to get dinner Friday with some of your venison? Maybe shepard's pie or something?
Tony said he might bring a turkey fryer... I'll have to get that firmed up, but that could be dinner Saturday.
I would ask Irish if he is up for a breakfast, but we all know he isn't getting up that early to cook! :biglaugh:
Anybody else up for a meal? Keep praying Ben will have a shot at that big fella so we get some BBQ!
Charlie,
Asking me to cook can be dangerous. I can grill and make stew that want kill anyone, but other than that all I can say is it will keep you alive.
I think I have some stew meat. I like to brown it add taters, onions and season to taste. Cook until done then see who doesn't passout after the first plate full.
Would something like that work?
Troy
Sounds good to me!
I can wake up if there is food envolved. I'll bring something for breakfast. may stay till monday the next week just to relax before going back to my hell called work.
Troy,
It was great meeting you at the shoot today. It won't be long until we are all sitting around the fire talking about how the hunting was that day!
Are all of us buckeyes welcome?
Even out of staters! Of course all buckeyes can join in the hunt.
Hope to see alot of you guys at Guernsey this weekend.
Charlie,
It's still funny as heck that we shot half the course before figureing out who each other was.
lol
Troy
Hey Charlie, to answer your earlier question ....yes both hunts.. only 10 weeks to go!
Sounds good Fred!
Levi,
Can't make Guernsey this weekend. Wish I could, but it's not in cards financially. Amy's car had a malfunction with the crank pulley and now I'm out some more cash! :banghead:
I do need to get back down there this month at some point though to get more stand locations set up.
Sorry to hear that been awhile since I've seen ya. Like I said give me a shout when you come down if I don't have work or school I'd like to help. I talked to Irish and when he comes down for the deer hunt were loadin his truck up with fire wood I work at a pallet building/fish farm and I can hook us up with some firewood.
Thanks for the firewood. I am looking at bringing some pallet wood as well. I have some other firewood from a local source I will bring. Load Irish up though! It will get burned.
Troy,
It is kinda funny we shot together for an hour and a half before we realized who the other person was! :knothead:
Y'all Buckeyes know how to throw a hunt! Looks like a great time!
Is GOSH not this year?
I think Mike is doing that hunt the weekend of Oct 8th.
Here are the people that have given me shirt requests so far;
Myself XL
Rob 2XL
Matt Med
Fred L
Brad XL
Jim (Kahn) XL
Dylan L
Troy L
Tony XL
Let me know if I missed you or you want to put an order in for a shirt.
I think I'll come this year now that it's in October. Ohio Power is a great place to be that time of year!
Hey, I think I can make this... :)
Whats out of state permit cost???
Cost about $125 or so to hunt deer for non res.
Updated food schedule...
Wednesday night; On your own unless Brad, Jim or Irish are up for cooking that day for all us new arrivals.
Matt;
-Breakfast Friday morning?
Charlie;
-Dinner Thursday night(bear stew)
-Breakfast Thursday Morning(Biscuits and gravy).
Fred,
-Dinner Friday Night
Tony;
-Beer Keg Turkey for 14-15 people Saturday. I will bring a bag or box of taters to go with it. Anybody want to provide another side?
Troy,
Late breakfast Saturday.
Sunday breakfast is still open.
*Lunches will be pack your own to eat in the stand or you can come back to camp for something. I don't think we need to plan big lunches. If the weather is warmer, we may have more people in camp midday. Let me know if anyone wants to put together a lunch or has ideas about it.
thats big game archery permit for so many days or year?
This sounds like a great time. I'll try to make it and get back with you when I know for sure.
$125 annual non-resident has to be purchased for deer or turkey. It is good all year. Small game hunting only can use the 3 day $40 nonresident tourist license.
$24 either sex deer permit for out of state or resident. Same cost whether you are or are not a resident.
It would be great to have you in camp Ken!
What Charlie said...
Hope you can make it Tim. It would be good to finally get to meet you.
I will let you know.. I have to be in Louisville Kentucky the last weekend in October for a history show so thats not to far from there so I could go hunt first :)
I would have all my goodies with me also... How many guys generally go, sounds like a blast..
Ken
I will not know until the last minute if I can make it. It sounds like a great time.
This year we have about 9 guys for the whole hunt and a total of about 15 if you include those that will drop in and hunt one or 2 days.
Charlie,
Breakfast Sat. morning is no problem. Just tell me what time everyone will want to eat. I know some fellows eat before hunting and others like to eat more of a brunch after coming out. The better meal will be the brunch.
Troy
Troy,
Maybe we should do a late breakfast at like 10:30-11:00. I'm not sure about that though because I would likely be later than that getting back out of the woods. Anyone getting there Sat morning could eat with most of us that way. Just an idea.
Also, maybe we can do a little practice shooting/competition early Sat afternoon before we all go back out hunting? Input is welcome on something like that. I know a number of people have targets they could bring. We have to be careful though because there are other campers in the area.
Charlie,
Lets say brunch, I'll bring eggs and bacon. May even afew deer steaks and hashbrowns.
Troy
Hey Charlie, what did you do lose your phone or some thing? Been trying to get hold of you for a week and a half. Levi I didn't see you at the shoot Saturday.
I was runnin around with Chet, Jim, Randy that crew I diden't see you either. Been awhile eh?
Sorry to anyone who has been trying to reach me. My cell wound up under 6 inches of water about a week and a half back. :banghead: It has been a blessing and a curse! My new phone should be here today.
Troy,
That sounds like a good brunch sort of thing to me!
Been there done that
Charlie ill tke an xl shirt. thanks
how much does this cost?and how many peaple usually go a year?
It is completely free other than your licence and tags and whatever food you bring and gas to drive. I believe out of state licencse for big game is $125 plus $25 for your either sex tag and I believe 15 for doe tags. I'm gonna go look for ohio regulations. If anyone needs some let me know and I'll try to get them to you. They are some of the easier regulations to read through, they're only a quarter inch thick and smaller than a comic book.Compaired to other states that use old unabridged dictionary bindings for theirs. Lol
does it make any difference in the license price if i am under 18?
I will have to read up on that one. I'll post a reply later. There is an apprentice license available, but I'm not sure if a non-resident can use that. The ODNR site isn't loading for me right now....
Matt,
Call me. I don't have your number anymore since my old phone died.
I believe a non-resident can use the apprentice license regardless of age. IF, you have never held a license in Ohio before....you can buy three of the apprentice licenses in your entire lifetime.
BUT.....if you have ever held a regular resident or non-resident license in the state of Ohio, you aren't eligible for the apprentice license.
For the past two years I have taken my niece whom is now 13 on apprentice licenses and she is a non-resident of the state of Ohio. She has one year left and then she has to purchase the youth license until she hits a certain age (which escapes me at the moment).
We just buy her apprentice license at a local Wally World over in Ohio and then her either sex deer tag. She hasn't ever killed anything yet, but she has had opportunities each year. She kinda takes after me.......she's "picky".
Winterhawk1960
Tradhunter,
With the appentice license you do have to be within eyesight of a licensed hunter. I believe that is the stipulation anyway.
Although I need reading glasses for small print, I have great eye sight! Anyone who may qualify feel free to get one and I'll vouch that I could see you the whole time. Depending on how big the problem gets dictate's how big of a hole you dig :0)
I'm sure we can take you out with us. To hunt trad hunter. I sent you an email, did you get it?
My problems never seem to be simple. I usually need really big holes.... :readit:
IF THERE IS ANYONE ELSE THAT NEEDS TO ORDER A SHIRT PLEASE LET ME KNOW!
I will be putting in the order shortly and I can't change it once it is in. If it is a question of cost, please PM me. The price is fairly low and definitely reasonable. You will pay my cost. There is no profit margin on this.
Thanks all,
TTT
Looks like Dylan has a USMC event that weekend so we are trying to work out some vacation stuff in order to get out there for a bit.
Just let me know. It sure would be a shame if you guys couldn't make it. :(
Hey Charlie what color are the shirts gonna be?
You should gp with something other than black grey tan or green, My wife hates the fact that that is all the color my wardrobe has. Lol
Shirts come in something other than black, gray, tan or green? Huh? Well that's just weird.
If there is still time put me down for a XL Mike
But Matt, you got that smokin' green hat you can wear with all them colors! What's the problem? :dunno:
LOL
You know, I try to go out and do a little last-light shootin and the skeetoos are like freekin crazy :scared: Bring on the frost!
Don we have been shooting Glow in the dark bracelets on Saturday nights at the club. its great fun!
Mike,
I will get you an XL shirt. I haven't put in the order yet. Been busy... Can we get deer to wear glow in the dark necklaces/bracelets? Just to simulate shooting conditions. :bigsmyl:
Don,
If you can double lung a mosquite, that IS a trophy!
Hec as thick as they are just let fly, I'm sure you'll hit 2 or 3. I live accross the street from a big swamp with 2 ponds right next door. I tried shooting at a candle once, till I caught the fletching and shaft on fire. :knothead:
Btw dont try it
Drummer, I see you are from my neck of the woods. I assume you locals shoot at geauga bowmens. New here and trad, been meaning to get out there to a meeting and join up. Got a nice invite from paolo. New addition to the family put the brakes on that for now. Went to school in muskingum county, love SE OH. Im gonna make an attempt to make it down there for a day or two and see what you fellas got goin on down there. Sounds fun.
Connon, yes I go to Geauga bowmen when I can (not as much as I would like). Come on down and hunt with us if you can. We always have a good time!! :campfire:
Hey drummer get denny's butt down here this year,
Yea, well Denny is more of a ghost then I am. I'll try but he is not a fan of growds or hunting on public land (from what i can tell).pure speculation on my part but I think he had experience at some point, ????
We got him to come to the GOS (http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r267/bowmofo/GOSH09024.jpg)H
The elusive ghost has a torn rotator cuff and probably won't even be able to hunt this year :( , and will be working 6 days a week up into Nov. without a chance of escape. Hope you guys all have a great time and best of luck!!! Irish did I read wife in a sentence you wrote??????
Denny
I hoped it would be healed up by now! any progress?
Yeah, Irish got hitched!
Yeah, it's improving but not something that just goes away without surgery.
Denny
Denny, I'm sorry to hear it's bothering you still. I knew you hurt it good but I didnt think it would still be keeping you from archery. I may know someone who mite have a crossbow you could borrow this season. I dont wanna hear any crap about it, thats what those things are for! I hate to think of you in the living room and not the woods this fall.
Fellas, I'm gonna come down for a day or two. Looking forward to it! I gotta warn you, tho. I'm new to trad this year. I'm hoping there will be a few daylight hours in camp where I can pick your brains and get some pointers. I do promise, however, not to be the annoying new guy in camp. Ive checked out the maps. The earth map doesn't match up to well with the AEP map on the site. I can't find the camp site on the google earth map and would like to do some scouting. Any big landmarks I could find to get me in the neighborhood?

With Google Maps search for this...
ohio power pond nb-43, oh
I was trying to get you gps coordinates or lat/long but apparently I'm dumber than the internet today. The camp site is just east of that pond.
Look at Google maps in the road map version and look for the pond Kahn said. Easier to find that way.
I just typed it straight into google and it came right up.
Charlie, i thought you were going to try and get deeper into that campground? There's some good spots down there at the end of the pond. i know i'd have a stand there this year if i was going
I just meant we would go further back at that site for now. We did have a look around and some things might be a little different next year. There are some better camp areas with a huge pavillion to use as well in them. With the new 20,000 acreas they just opened there are deer that haven't even been hunted yet in years. World class bucks and old fat does! I never even hunted AEP before 5 years ago. There are areas I haven't even seen yet. Let's hope there are plenty more years to learn and hunt out there. It is truely an untapped resource. This year should be eventful!
Yep denny I got hitched in june.Going pretty well, not that it matters, I'm stuck for life. Lol. Hope your shoulder starts feeling better. I got a motorcycle a few weeks ago so I'll probably be at more geauga bow shoots next summer. My computer crashed so I can only get on from my phone. I hope we get a chance to talk again soon.
Irish what kind of scooter? I bought my three piece bow after I got my bike, LOL
Its a Suzuki DR650 dual sport. Gonna be using it at the hunt and probably at the squirrel hunt.
Irish,
What are you going to sleep in?
May need a place to crash for the squirrel hunt but I'm gonna trailer it down to the deer hunt. I may need a place to crash during the squirrel hunt. Lol
Me and a buddy are planning on coming down for the deer hunt!! I can't wait to meet some of you guys, I'm looking forward to a great time!
I can bring an extra tent and straw for underneath.
can't wait to see everyone again! :smileystooges:
Got the okay to take off work!!! Looking forward to the hunt, im the buddy that is coming down with longbowlogan. We will be headed there after work on wednesday.
Looks like moving the hunt to October was a popular idea. It will be good to meet all the newcomers. Who all is using climbers or climbing sticks this year?
I am definitely bringing some sticks and a hang on stand. Too many good fringe areas that aren't fit for climbers, but the sticks and a hang on will work wonders.
Look forward to meeting you Alex and Logan.
Charlie I need to change my shirt size to an XL is that ok?
Longbowlogan I'm guessing you live in logan? I live in thurston by baltimore can't wait to see ya there. You too alex.
Thats fine Levi
FYI; I plan to hunt the weekend before the Ohio Trad Deer Hunt out on AEP and leave my stuff there with Irish and Jim. So anyone else that wants to come out earlier is certainly welcome. I will hunt Sat and Sunday and then come back Wednesday evening and Hunt until the following Sunday.
Alex and I are from Delaware, Ohio LOL we can't wait to get down there! I'm bringing my muddy stand and sticks :) they weight around 23#'s stacked together and I can put them in about any tree!
I'll probley bring climber as well as a hang-on and stick.
Troy
I'm bringing my huntmore stool and my hang on and sticks. Gonna be tearing everything apart tonight and making sure everything is in good working order. Got to rewire my trailor and take one of the motorcycle ramps off. Build 2 dozen arras. Sharpen broadheads and wash all my wool. Got a lot left to do and very little time to do it. Hey Charlie, Christinia, Chloe, and I are going down to AEP friday to hunt and hike. If I can convince her I'll try to cut our trail with a machette. Other wise we are going to have to cut it friday evening. Or sunday afternoon. Call me tonight if you see this. If not I'm sure I'll call you.
BTW I will also be bringing a lockable gangbox if you decide to bring a gun and don't want to leave it open in camp. And from what I can tell I have some extra space in my tent I have a 12x12 canvas pyramid tent with a wood burner if anybody needs a place to stay. I can fit 3 with the stove but it gets cramped, so really only have room for one person but could deal with being a little tight for a day or 2. Let me know if you need to crash.
Practicing a lot and it's paying off!!!
That was a 30 yard shot!
And then 40 yards!! I'm very excited for this year :)
Is that with broadhead?
Nice shooting! I was just out working on some arrows tonight.
Also, I waited as long as I could, but finally put in the order for the shirts today. I will PM you all with the cost. They should be in by Oct 3rd or 4th. The guy I buy them from is a friend and always gets me decent t-shirts at a good price. Even wih the lapel design added he is still giving them to me at the same price as last year!
I like to hear lots of climbers and stands! Some deer are going down! I have to figure out something for gambrels and a way to hang any deer we might get. Don't forget your fishing poles as well ladies and gents!
Hey guy I'll be down there sat before have to work friday now. sounds like we got afew new faces show n up.
No broadheads in those pics, I'm shooting 165 grain zwickey 2 blade no mercy heads this year!
I will most likely be shooting Zwickey Eskimos again this year. although I have been experimenting with the dead head with great results.
Gonna be shooting grizzly's again this year, maybe I can put some blood and meat on them this year.Gonna start making some new arrows tonight. Got to start fresh this year. It's been 2 years since I've had deer blood on my arrows, it's time for a change.
Matt, your a married man now, How much change can you stand?
This sounds better and better but the schedule at work won't let me loose. Maybe next year?????
If luck will have it I think I might get down there to fill a doe tag or two. Hopefully down a biggun early then relax the rest of the year. We shall see.
I was wondering what happened for you Susan. I just figured you were a quiet sorta gal! Sorry to hear you can't make it... :(
Matt,
Better no blood than a bad hit my friend.....
Is that a crack charlie?
Only if it is a dig at myself. I should have had 3 does and a little buck last year. Two clean misses, let one walk and one bad shot..... :banghead:

Hole in the transfer case? sounds like he is a she!

We plan to be there Fri-Sat.
Glad to hear it Jim!
Drummer,
Take Irish up on his offer!
Tom,
It would be good to have you in camp. I hope we get a few good ones too!
1997 But right now there is way too many things on the edge, the poor thing is falling apart. I may keep it and try to bring it back to life but I have to get something more reliable to drive. Thanks Matthew!
I know what you mean Don. My truck wouldn't start yesterday. Just turned out to be the battery, but it is on it's last leg too....
How far away is this shindig from Malta?
From what I can see om the map, it looks to be 40 min. Give or take a few.
Irish are yu going to go down earley. Iplan on being down there from the 15 thru. 20 what my work schedule will allow me. Any other takers on meeting down there earlier.
Hec from the way it sounds some of these guys will be there all month :campfire:
Bg ill be there the same time but through the next weekend too. I give up, I found the number of the amish guy that made my ground cloth, if you're still interested.
I'm sitting in a tree right now and charlie is about 200 yards behind me, haven't seen anything yet but we both got out late and had never used our new climbing sticks and hang ons soooooo. Lol won't be long though. BTW for anyone wanting to come scout before the hunt. 2 weekends before it There is the Great Ohio Squirrel Hunt at aep also, It is in the events section I believe, trad bows and squirrels, you can't beat it.
I'm in a tree also! I didn't pick a spot and missed high on a doe already lol oh well that's the fun with a stick bow, just glad to be seeing deer :)
This is inspiring!
Had 2 small bucks 15 steps from my stand this morning! Passed up shots on them, little to young. The bigger of the 2 had 4pts on one side and 2 big spikes about 8-9 inches on the other side. He was a cool looking deer, hopefully he makes it another year or two!
little test drive on my new duds today

I'm counting down the days! I'm hoping to have a doe before I come down to hunt!
Who you guys going to pick on this year anyways, I won't be there. :smileystooges: :campfire:
Probably me and my buddy, we will probably be the youngest guys there lol
Bg,
I'm planning on coming in on Wed the 19th.
Troy
Logan,
How old are you two? I'm likely hunting Delaware wildlife area this weekend. You guys going to be out and hiding behind trees in the area this weekend?
I'm 22 and alex is 23, I was hunting wildlife tonight. The rain sucked but had one doe out of range. This weekend I'll be hunting a farm i have permission for!!! What part of the wildlife are you going to be hunting this weekend? Maybe i can meet up with you during the middle of the day, I live close to the wildlife area.
Got you beat I'm 18.
Rob will probably want to hunt the state park on Saturday. I hope I can talk him into hunting the area south or north of 229, just off 23. Which area we hunt depends on the wind. Does that area get hit hard? I know hunters pile into the State Park with crossbows on the weekend.
I would hunt north of 229, seems like less people most of the time. If you have a small boat that would really help you get back where a lot of guys don't want to walk :) being the weekend there will probably be a lot of people out hunting. The temps are going to be nice and cool Saturday so hopefully the deer will be moving good!

At least I won't be the only youngin there except for my buddy, hope to see you there.
If I can get off work the 22nd I will try and come down and add another young guy. I'm 24. Got to bring a fishing pole or two as well. I fish out of a float tube down there on some ponds way back and caught alot of big bass....and bluegills with a flyrod for lunch. Anybody gonna hunt from the ground? I dont use a climber and dont have anything other than screw in steps or I will be a ground guy. I will post on here again if I can make it, but if I can't I know you guys will have a blast and hupe you all stay safe.
Hope you make it down! Alex and I will probably still hunt Thursday so we can do some scouting. The rest of the days we will probably hunt out of stands. I think we are going to bring some fishing poles down also!
Hey stick flipper what town do you live in? I live near baltimore, maybe we could get together and shoot sometime?
Also bring a shotgun. I know its a traditional hunt but dove woodcock grouse squirrel turkey coyote and crow are in season. I got a woodcock last year. And some squirrel.
Celtic,
I live in Hebron. I can about hit a golf ball to buckeye outdoors. I grew up in Pataskala.
Heck your not far away at all. I'm working in Pataskala right now. You ever been to the Great Ohio Squirrel Hunt? It;s Oct 8-9th if you have the time you should come. It's awesome. It's at AEP near cambridge. If not maybe we could get together and shoot sometime.
I work in pataskala as well. I work full-time for west licking fire district as a FF/Medic at the main station which is the big one in broad street a half mile east of kroger.
I have not been to the GOSH. I won't be able to go this year. I have been off for a few weeks for my wife and newborn. I go back the 4th and work is crazy until halloween. Where do you work at? Where do you usually shoot? I shoot in my yard but I also go to the fish hatchery. The hatchery is just south of I-70 and in between SR 37 and SR 79. You can see the hatchery ponds from 70. They have a really nice range. They use the 4'x 4' block targets set at 10,20,30,and 40 yards. They also have an elevated deck that is probably 12'-15' high to shoot from. It would be more of a drive for you though so if you have some place in mind I'd be fine with that.
Hey fellow tradgangers I will be there sometime on Wednesday...Vermont opens this saturday...Yeehaw! can't wait
I'm an electrician. we are doing a renovation of the waste water treatment plant. I should be there another month or 2. And actually the fish hatchery is only about 8-10 minutes away. I have yet to go there but want to check it out. Is it just a range or a course? I'll pm you my number, going yard sailing in about 15 minutes. YeeHaw. lol not really. lol
It is a range not a course. It is nice for a range.....but a course would be a blast
Well I know a place or 2 to go stump shootI have 3 or 4 small game targets at my place. Have you ever been to tar hallow? It's about an hour drive but it is one of the most beautiful stretches of woods in ohio. I love stump shooting and squirrel hunting down there.
It's getting closer! I can't wait :)
it better show up soon or I may quit my job. lol
The shirts are in and I will pick them up as soon as I can. I will let you all know when I have them.
Who all needed them shipped again? I have Logan and Troy wanting the shirts sent to them, but I know I am missing someone.
How did you do in the wildlife area this past weekend? And yes I would like my shirts shipped, thanks!
Not too good, but not ready to give up on that area yet!
I saw 8 deer in coshocton sat night stalked a doe within 40yrds. was pretty syked about it.
I believe I sent extra for shipping
why are yall getting them shipped you'll all see him in either this w3eekend or 2 after. LOL Who is ready to go to GOSH I'm also going to deer hunt while I'm there. Have to know if my spots are full up or dead. See yall real soon.
I was hoping to wear it at the squirrel hunt :archer:
lol
Sorry Mike, but I can't ship the shirts out until next week or this Friday at the earliest. I may be able to bring yours to the hunt on Saturday. I would even wash it for you so it didn't have that crappy new shirt smell....! The shirts have arrived at the shop, but I haven't gotten over there to pick them up. I will get them today or Friday.
Not an issue !
I'm heading down to the area, I'll give a scouting report when I get back
Wish I could have made it for the squirrel hunt saturday. Spent the day with my dad had a good time on the river kayaking, haden't done much together in a while. Sorry I mssed it.
I was there Saturday...... Couldn't find anyone. Did you have it somewhere else ? I checked d and k.
We were at D camp, we did't get our normal spot as boy scouts took that spot. we most likely were in the woods during daytime. we also pecked up early on Sunday to get the Deer home.
Mike,
Who got a deer?
Counting the days! Got a new hitman longbow, wensel broadheads, and some pink nugent arrows! I hope the weathers nice and cool.
There is a front coming in that should cool things down. I'm not sure how long it will last, but hopefully until February!
Charlie,
I'm with you in hoping it cools down. I just returned from the IN TG hunt and it was hot. Spent more time in camp than the woods due to the heat.
Troy
Shirts were shipped this morning. The delivery will be tomorrow according to USPS. Sorry it took so long.
I am still only certain of 2 people that sent extra $ money for the shirts to be shipped. That is Mike and Logan. I think there is still one other person that wanted the shirt shipped to them. Please let me know.
Let me know
-Charlie
Jimmy(GBHunter) and Matt,
If you get down there before anyone else on Friday, set up further back and to the top of the camping area if possible. I would like to be in a bigger area for everyone to camp nearer to each other this year.
Thanks!
Ok will do if possible. I'll be there sometime sat.
I might just beat you down there then. I'll have to talk to Matt before I head down.
Got the shirts today! They look good, maybe my new good luck charm :)
Glad to hear you got them!
If anyone needs to reach me, the telephone number is 614-209-8568. While in camp I won't have a signal, but I will go to the top of the hill Saturday night to check messages. I will also be available most of this Friday(10-14)via cell. I am heading down to set some things up either VERY late tomorrow night or early Saturday morning. I plan to hunt this Saturday and Sunday. I will come home for Mon and Tuesday then be back out there for Wed night to Sunday afternoon. I likely won't have signs out until Wed night though.
If you have any questions please feel free to call me.
I won't be down till sunday afternoon, have to get some work done at the house before I leave, or the wife is going to leave me. lol
Due to a high numnber of campers in our camp area K, we are forced to change locations. We will be camping in area D. Please look for the primitive tents and you will will find us. I will also have a sign posted.
Sorry for the change, but it is necessary.
Campsite D is about 8 miles south of cumberland on 83 it is about a mile and a half past the aep building on the right, campsite D is on the left. Jimmy if you can try to secure the camp site all the way in the back it's 30 yrds down the road that says road closed. I'll be there sometime sun.
Charlie who is making what meal for what day morning or night?
Tony is already set up in camp D look for his tent.
Charlie who is making what meal for what day morning or night?
These are all the volunteers for food. If you don't see a meal listed plan to eat on your own.
Charlie;
-Breakfast Thursday Morning(Biscuits and gravy)
-Dinner Thursday night(bear stew)
Matt;
-Breakfast Friday morning
Fred,
-Dinner Friday Night
Tony;
-Dinner Saturday; Beer Keg Turkey for 14-15 people. I will bring a bag or box of taters to go with it. Anybody want to provide another side?
Troy,
Late breakfast/brunch Saturday.
That covers a good number of meals. Lunch isn't listed for any of the days. Therefore, you take care of yourself for lunches. Hopefully it is cool and deer are moving all day so we will be eating lunch in our stands. I am leaving tomorrow morning. Couldn't get free tonight. I am coming home Sunday night and returning Wednesday night for the "official" start of camp. I won't be putting the signs out until Wednesday night. Probably sometime around 6:30 or 7 pm. I can't get there before then. If you get there before we have signs out, just go to camp D and look for the Canvas tent(s).
Headed down today. Just have to do laundry pack all my **** and load it on the truck and trailer. "sounds" easy enough. LOL
Took me all day but I'm loaded up and on my way.
Directions to camp D from I70:
South on 83.
-continue south on 83 through Cumberland
-continue past console energy sign(roughly 7 miles south of Cumberland. It is lit up at night)
-continue past the big lit up white building with red roof(It says AEP in large red letters)
-You will see a sign just past this building that is yellow and is a warning for truckers of a steep grade.
-Continue past that sign and you will see a yellow sign that says park entrance.
-Continue past that sign and the Camp D is at the bottom of the hill on the left.
-There is a big brown sign on the left that says Camp D, but it is actually easy to miss in the dark.
-We are in the first set of campsites on the right. The camp road is a little long.
-Look for several white canvas tents a small blue and gray tent and a blue pic-nic tarp.
Camp D is roughly 9 miles south of Cumberland.
See you all thursday!
The hunting was rough this weekend, but Tony did pass up a 20-25 yard shot on a button buck. The wind and full moon didn't do us any favors.
Sounds good! I can't wait to get down there and meet everyone, Alex and myself will be there Wednesday evening. Hopefully before dark! Lol
I'm not sure what time I will get back down Wednesday. That is why I tried to get very specific with the directions.
FYI.. There won't be signs posted until I come through Wed evening. In the past someone has removed some of my signs. I'm glad this is easier to find than Camp K if that happens again.
Also, the camps cleared out pretty well. Most of the campers were there to hike, fish or just hang out. Very few hunters were there. I didn't run into any other people when hunting this weekend. AEP is HUGE, it never ceases to amaze me! Look over your aerial photos before you come down. Lots of places to roam.
Hope you guys have a good time and enjoy yourselves. Please post up some pics for those of us who won't be able to make it.
Noticed on the weather forcast that Wed. is supposed to be rain, rain, rain....
Is there a place around the camp site (open building or something) to get out of the rain?
Troy
Charlie, Tony left this morning but will ne back tonight or tomorrow, he's taking some stuff home, his tent colapsed on him about 3am because his stakes pulled up, it rained all night but it's beautiful day now. Cold morning so deer shoud be moving early, still a little windy.
If anyone is interested i will have my hitman longbow with me that i might do some trading with if anyone is interested. It's 55@28
Call me wimp or whatever, but if the heavy rain is still on for Wed. as they are calling for now I want be over until Thursday.
Troy
Wimp! Lol that's why I brought the shotgun, that's for rain huntin. Lol tony brought his. I jumped 2 woodcock yesterday shot a squirrel and tony jumped a grouse.
Matt,
I figured you'd be the first to jest me... :bigsmyl: Guess I do have the advantage when it comes to hunting. I can pick and choose my days to hunt. :biglaugh:
Troy
Matt,
I heard you guys have been seeing some deer the last couple days. Is that right?
If it rains, I will be holed up in one of the big tents! At least we covered up the wood so it will stay dry. Maybe I will bring my canopy. Never used it yet. See you guys tomorrow evening rain or not!
Tony,
Sorry about your tent bud. Hope mine is still sitting ok!
You guys may have more target animals than you expected. Apparently about 50 animals got out of an Exotic Animal Farm last night in Muskingum county near Zanesville. I guess the animals include lions, tigers and bears [Oh My] as well as wolves and cheetahs............
http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/story/2011-10-18/exotic-animals-loose-ohio/50821092/1
Just heard that story. Could be interesting! I might have to raise my stand a little higher in case the giraffe comes into my area!
Yes grizzly wolves lions and tigers are running loose, bring you shotguns and slugs, seriously we were told by aep to keep watch and have a loaded gun.or big handguns.
I haven't seen any heard a few and tony and jimmy saw some and brad saw one. I have only been out twice.
Charlie can you grab some extra wood, what I brought won't fit in my stove so I put it in the wood pile.
I had planed to do quite a bit of ground blind hunting. With all this going on I may just perch by butt in the trees with the squirrels. :scared:
Wouldn't it be a hoot to be sitting in your stand and have a grizzly ot tiger come walking by? :bigsmyl:
Troy
I can try to get some matt. There is a small lake between my house and the shed I keep my wood in!
There may still be a monkey on the loose - you guys get extra points if you bag it.
Guess I better bring my cannon
Sounds like you need to change the thread name to "2011 Traditional Safari".
Best of luck and may the weather man change the forcast for you guy's!
The monkey has herpes so will be counted as "dangerous game".
Buckeye Hunter how high are you going to have to raise your stand now? :)
I think the monkey is inside one of the lions!

Yes - when in doubt, do not kiss the monkey. Come to think of it, that sounds like a pretty good rule for life in general.
Grunted in a good 8 point buck tonight out by the power line. He looked to be 3 1/2. His antlers were outside his ears/. Probably about 125 inches. His neck was already swollen up!
Kahn,
There are way too many jokes in there. Most of them inappropriate.....
Shoot left my shirt down their tonight will somebody give it to irish for me please..thanks
Good luck to you guys.... Do you put up a post for the hunt in advance? id like to get in on a hunt or two with some trad gangers if I can put some days aside in advance.
Dave yes we post it in advance, next year it will be in november. Keep an eye out. We post about 2 months in advance so everyone can get there time off.
Ok that sounds great......
Any pictures of the bragging post?
Charlie,
I hope you guys get to let the string go on some good ones !!
First evening out i put a stalk on a bedded 135 inch 10pt and got 15 yards from him till the wind hit the back of my neck :( He stood for a shot be had a limb in the way and didn't want to put a bad shot on him. I ended up seeing him the next night but 300 yards away. I did pass on a little 6pt chasing a doe, had a blast and met a lot of good guys!
We are back, but unfortunately short on groceries AKA deer.
Some of the guys were hunting Western style and stalked some bucks and does. Like Logan said, he got VERY close on a nice 10 pointer.
Tony passed on a button buck the first day.
I just barely missed out on a chance for a nice 8 a few days into the hunt. He snuck in behind me and I saw him too late. Then he walked toward my second shooting lane, but hit the brakes. He abruptly took off straight away and didn't give me a shot. I just needed 3 more steps.
Good stuff, Charlie. Thanks again for all the work and planning you do to put this thing together year after year. I'd love to get to spend more time at the camp (well maybe not this year - too rainy! :-p ) but the last few years' schedules haven't allowed for that. Rest assured we do appreciate your effort - not to mention your bear stew.
levi your shirt is at the dog store or morgan has it
No problem Jim. So close so many times! It is getting a little frustrating!
Where are the pics Charlie? :)
Even without bagging any deer trip was a great time! Hope we can get together and hunt before season is up this year because I don't wanna wait till next year to do it again! Lol
Glad to get down and see you guys and it was nice meeting everyone new, Logan and Troy great talkin with you.
The pics will go up tonight or tomorrow. I have a few things to get done before loading them on photobucket and posting them here.
The practice shooting was a good time. I got to shoot a few bows I had never shot before. It was a good time overall.
Sitting around the fire until 1:30am isn't conducive to hunting the next morning though! :campfire:
It was nice talking to you too Levi, good luck with your new bow. I agree, staying up till 1am really hurts you if you want to hunt that morning lol I had a great time!
Great hunt even if bambi didn't do his part. Food was great and thanks to Brad, I did manage to feed everyone Saturday morning without killing anyone. Already looking forward to nextyear. Maybe it want be as cold and rainy as Thursday was for me. Again, thanks to Brad I had a place to warm up that day.
Troy
Sounds like you guys had a great time. Wish we could have went but just couldn't fit it in our schedule. My son and I are going down the week end of Nov.5th, anyone have any suggestion on some good areas. We will make sure to be at next year's hunt.
no problem with the help troy and you are more than welcome to sit next to the stove in my tent anytime. it does not take harvested deer to make a successful hunt. great fun was had by all. thanks charlie for putting everything together. look forward to next year. brad
Waiting for some pictures! any one going down for the rut?
not sure. looking like a negatory since the wife will be off work un less someone is going down for a day. Need whoever took pictures to post some.
Irish Chttp://tradgang.com/noncgi/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=109869harlie started a diff trend with the pics.
