Title: Walking among the elk...
Post by: ishiwannabe on July 27, 2011, 11:17:00 AM
As some of you know, I have been down with a spinal injury. out of work, laid up....blah blah blah.
The one positive is the amount of time I get to spend with my son.
That being said, I talked to a local elk farmer and arranged to bring the family there. He took us right out into the pasture. We walked up to and around the animals. Well, in a word, breathtaking. Now I know they arent wild, and I know they are tame, but being that close to animals I have dreamed about hunting all my life was pretty impressive. My son showed his hunting instincts, and was literally sneaking up on them.
Afterwards, Les, the farmer, brought us into his house and asked my son to name all the animals(he is a taxidermist too). He was impressed by my boy.
All in all, it was a very cool evening. Here are some pictures.

Jamie

Wowzer! Being close to elk, in the wild or not is an experiece rarely forgotten.

Glad you were able to bring some of you family with you.

I bet it gets the elk juices flowing for your future hunt!

Good luck with everything!

Outside with the family wild or tame doesn't matter!! Good stuff. Thanks for sharing. Hope you have a quick recovery.

Good stuff, yes they were in a pen but you may have just planted a seed in a young mind for life.

It was here near Windham. Close to where the Muzzy is held.

I was telling Les about my dream to hunt them, and he offered to have me back anytime to "learn elk".

Anyone who has a chance to bring a child to something like this, I highly recommend it. He is still talking about the "really huge elks" today.  :)

You should Brian. It is free and he gives tours of the elk, and of his taxidermy. The kids would love it I am sure.
If any of the Muzzy shooters are interested, all I need to do is make a call...

Hope your injuries leave you with no permanent disabilites, so that you may someday realize that dream of chasing these amazing creatures with a stick and string.  There is nothing quite like it, and the best part is, you can hunt you butt into the ground chasing them, and if you dont get to kill one,it really doesnt matter.

The thing about elk hunting is the chase, and the time spent in thier habitat. Killing one is a bonus for sure, but I for one never let that one factor define my hunt.

Great pics.

Amazing animals. I'd love to see some up close, tame or not. Good on you for taking your boy to share such an awesome experience.

I also hope all goes well on your recovery and you get back to top form.

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks everyone. I plan on hunting them at some point, I figured I may as well get to know them now.  :)
Glenbo, he does. Our very own Mikey hooked him up with a little longbow. Actually I just got some arrows for him that I need to refletch.
Anyone that is close to a opportunity like this, I highly recommend it. For the little kids, and us bigger ones. Lol.
