HEY GUYS, I SHOOT A BEN PEARSON BUSHMASTER, ITS 62"AMO,55#@28. IM PULLING ROUGHLY 29", SO IM SHOOTING GOLDTIP HUNTER EXPEDITION XT 7595'S, WITH CRESTING ON THE BACK WITH 4" FEATHERS(NOT SURE THE BRAND JUST NORMAL LOOKING), AND A 250GR PIONT UP FRONT. NOW A GOOD ARCHER FRIEND OF MINE SAID WITH THAT WEIGHT ON THE BOW, THAT I NEED TO LIGHTEN THE FRONT MAYBE DOWN TO 175 AND GET BIGGER FEATHERS LIKE 5" TO STABILIZE THE ARROW BETTER. THE ARROW HITS BASICALLY WHERE IM AIMING WITH GAPO SHOOTING BUT PORPOISES AND DANCES ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE TARGET. WHERE CAN I GET SOME GREAT FEATHERS OR WHO DO YALL RECOMEND?
There is a bunch of people selling great feathers or you can get a 3Rivers catalog and get about anything you want or need there. I'm not sure that differant feathers is the answer though, might be a stiff spine issue or nock point issue. Bigger feathers will stabilize faster but still don't think you should mask the problem with a bigger feather maybe more tuning, keep asking questions, its a great way to learn bud!!!
You didn't mention the length of your arrows, but I would guess that you need all off those 250 grains up front for that spine arrow. You may be able to eliminate the porpoising by changing the nock point.
I'm no expert - actually, I'm just taking a stab at this here... but I hope some of the experts do chime in for you. (I'm kinda curious to see if I'm goin' down the right path about this myself.)
Depending on the length of the arrow I`m guessing that arrow is way too stiff. You may need more than 250 up front.
From a good bird.
I raise my own so I know what I get at harvest time.
sounds like you are way overspined. My recurve that is 53 @28 with a 27" draw needs a 500 with 225 up front.
As others have aready pointed out your problem isn't feathers. It's an arrow that's way overspined for your bow. With correctly spined arrows, 4-inch fletch is plenty to guide a field point.
You're shooting 7595s from about a 58ish pound bow. Those arrows are WAY WAY WAY too stiff. You'll need either much longer arrows at that spine (silly option), or quite a lot more point weights (and you're already pretty heavy, but that could work), or lighter spinned arrows with similar point weight (probably the most practical option). Gold Tip 5575s would allow you that, as would any number of other shafting options. Or you could go the super-duper heavy point route with what you have as new shafts can be pretty steep.
I get all my feathers from 3rivers. However I too believe that you are way to overspined to just use bigger feathers.
I shoot 56# at 28" bud and my set up is as follows:
Gold Tip Traditional 5575
100 Grain Brass Insert
175 Grain Point
16 grain nock.
Total arrow weight is 562 grains, which puts me at almost exactly 10 grains per pound, and flys like a dream.
I hate to say it, but you should sell the 7595's. The numbers sort of indicate the range of pounds that the arrow is meant for. In that case a 7595 is best suited for a bow around 75-95 lbs.
If you get the 5575's, and do a setup close to mine you will be perfectly spined (or close to it) in Stu's calculator, and should really like how your arrows fly.
For sure you only need the 5575's and probably don't need all that weight up front. Remember total arrow weight, keep at least 10 Grains per pound of your bow.
I agree with USN Sam, I shoot 54@28 and shoot a similar arrow perfect.
54@27''
CE Heritage 250 cut to 30''
125 grain point
and if I run a 100 grain insert I trim them back to 28.5''
ok i think im getting it. but if i shoot a 29" arrow (which mine is) 7595's with a 250gr piont doesnt that weaken the spine of the shaft considerably? so if i went down to a 5575 with the same point would i be underspined with that theory in mind? reason is it might be common or maybe not, but my point of impact (aiming with the point of the arrow) is about 18"-20" high consistently at 20 yards. so i was trying to weight the arrow down up front.
Yes you need 55/75 Gold tips.
Yeah, 75/95's even at near full length would be ok for something around 70+ but for your 57-ish pound bow you'd be better served with the 55/75's near full length.
I shoot 55/75`s out of my 58lb bow with 281 grains up front including the insert and they are cut to 29".I think a 55/75 with 250 will get you in the ballpark
As others have said, you are overspined. You need shafts as well as feathers. My recommendation would be the Nocking Point. Mike carries just about anything you would need and his prices are great.
DB
ditto the nocking point!!
Mike at the Nocking Point has always done a great job of helping me and getting the order out asap. Good competitive pricing also.
From Magnus. He's a sponsor on here.
agree with mike get ahold of magnus...and if they fly great leave em alone...i shoot a 340 spine out of a 59 lb. widow cut to 30 i draw 29 and bareshaft and paper tune perfect....
