Title: First time on the ground
Post by: 3Feathers on July 24, 2011, 03:33:00 PM
Who is going to hunt from the ground for deer this fall for the first time? This is going to be mine.Always hunted from a treestand.Sometimes it can get somewhat boring.Want to be able to make things happen.Lots of times watched deer pass by way out of range.Maybe on the ground you might have a chance to cut them off if the wind is right.Well I,m going to give it my best shot this fall. Its my goal for this year........

I think that if you go in to edit your first post, it will let you fix the title...

I want to do some ground hunting this year.  More so than just getting tired of sitting and then deciding to walk around.  I've got GFA's book, and am going to try to put some of it into practice.  I just get tired of sitting in a tree.  My best hunting encounters with deer for the past 2-3 seasons were all from the ground, while sneaking into or out of an area.  As a side note... I have to walk a mile from my where I park to where I hunt -- all private land -- and started using my mountain bike.  I was, and still am, shocked at how the bike does NOT spook game like walking.  I literally almost ran over a coon in the dark, accidentally got within about 20 yards of an oblivious skunk, and upon parking my bike at the corner of a cornfield, regularly find deer within 50 yards out of sight around the corner.  The critters seem to not spook at the continuous sound of hushed, rolling bike tires.  So, that's how I go into my hunting area.

I stand hunted 34 years I started totally ground hunting in 05 after 2 strokes. You have to hunt the wind totally. Made a ghillie in 82 never not used it when on the ground.
45 Gobblers 15 with a self bow along with 12 of my 34 selfbow bucks. I'll never climb another tree. I'm 49 and it seemed to have gotten more dangerous the old I got.
Plus now i have no balance. I love buck hunting to much to fall. Plus selfbow and ground hunting go's hand in hand.

I am actually thinking of stand hunting this year for a change. I've always hunted the ground and have had success there as well. I'm sure I will ground hunt plenty this year too, just thinking of trying something different.

Go very, very, very (did I say very) slowly... and play the wind...  thats if you are moving... a ground sit can also be very productive if ya find a funnel or well used trail....
