Getting my elk arrows ready tonight and as I'm waiting for different stones for my KME sharpener I thought I'd try to file sharpen my Stos 160's. I'd never file sharpened 2 blade bh's before so I threw in my Bowhunters of Tradgang DVD in and watched Charlie Lamb's tutorial on using files. It took awhile to get the tip section ground in on both sides, then switched to lighter alternating strokes and... Oh my God... I've never had a broadhead that sharp! I take some pride that I can use a file and stone to shave hair with my Snuffers, but tonight I finally achieved that "hair popping" sharpness that y'all talk about. I've got a big bald spot on my calf to prove it. Excited, I took a scrap peice of leather held vertical, placed the blade on top and with a downward stroke sliced through it effortlessly. I then pushed the head through the leather as if it wasn't there. If it seems I'm a little stoked at learning this new skill, it's because I am! To be fair, I just got the KME and I'm eager to use it, but learning how to file sharpen a broadhead just seems to me a bucket-list kind of thing for a trad hunter. Thank you Mr. Lamb and the guys who put the video together.

Mike... congratulations. I understand your elation. The KME is a great system for sharpening broadheads, but there's something very Howard Hill and Fred Bear about being able to produce a killing edge with just a file.
I had a discussion on this very subject not long ago with my buddy Chris Kinslow. I've been doing it so long I kind of take it for granted.
It's nice to know that you'll never get caught with a dull knife or broadhead if you've got a file in your pocket or pack.

Yep, can understand your being 'stoked' - after many years of wearing out Arkansas stones, and only using files to repair or reshape heads, 'twas somewhat an epiphany for me too... BTW, gotta put in a plug for Grobet brand files - may be others as good out there, but the cutting ability of these files is amazing...

Congratulations; using a file with finesse is almost a lost art, skills like this become lost in the age of instant gratification.. Pass it on to a young person
