Title: Fletching
Post by: Ronaldlee on July 15, 2011, 10:49:00 PM
Can anyone tell me what the shelf life of fletching is ? The feathers I put on a year ago seem to be getting brittle and coming apart. Even the ones that have been recently replaced. They are all out of the same stock, so I assume they are the same age. Thanks Ron

I think that it might have to do with location, tempature, glues used, sunlight and ect.  I see you live in Arizona in which you might have more drying weather and if left in sunlight, the sunlight could be adding to the breakdown of the feathers.

I have feathers for fletching onto arrows and on arrows, that I have in storage in the basment, that are over 20 years old and are in fine condition.

Thanks for the reply. I am getting ready to order a new batch and didn't want to get a big order if they would go bad before I used them.

I'm still shooting arrows that I fletched over 20 years ago. Have feathers stored in zip-loc bags older than that. You'll lose or break 'em before the feathers wear out.

I keep my unused feathers in plastic.

Probably something I did . I'll keep my next batch in the house where there is a stable environment.
