Title: Anyone switch between longbow and recurve regularly?
Post by: huntin_sparty on July 15, 2011, 08:43:00 AM
My 9 yr old had been reading some books that really got him enthusiastic about shooting his Maddog pup longbow.  I decided to check em out and the main characters shoot longbows and got me wanting to try and shoot a longbow too but I have been a recurve shooter for my 2 years of Trad.  Anyhow I bought a use one here Great Northern Fireball, I really like the ease of silencing the LB but the grips are totally different and when switching between the 2 during shooting sessions it takes a few rounds of arrows to adjust.  Are you just a longbow or recurve shooter or with time can you switch between without suffering accuracy on a short term basis?
Thanks

I can go back and forth easily.

Usually takes me a few shots to get "reaquainted" with the new bow.

Dont let your mind fool you into not shooting a bow well.  Wether you think you are or are not, You're probably right  ;)

Good luck, Have fun

I switch between a recurve risered longbow (Bob Lee TD LB) with a pistol grip and a straiht longbow with a locator grip and have no problems at all with that. after 5 shots im usually back in line with everything.

I am a straight up longbow guy, but have recently been shooting a recurve given to me by a good friend. So i have been shooting both, and like Charlie said, it only takes a couple shots to re-adjust.

With my kajika stiks, I have the same riser and switch back and forth from longbow and recurve  all the time, No problems here!!  I acutally got a second kajika stik that is recurve so I could leave the longbow limbs on my other!  I allways take both out shooting!

I shoot both enough that they all feel familiar to me.

Having high wrist grips or the same handle on a ILF rig on both is cheating.  I meant switching from the flat or longbow looking locator grip with a lot of hand then switch to a high wrist pistol of the recurve with the thumb, pointer and ring finger touching.

I like to shoot my recurves and longbows on a daily basis.  I don't seem to have any trouble adjusting.

I go back and forth all the time.....which might explain my shooting...lol! For the most part I like low grips and if they are even close there is no problem. Medium or high grips takes a few shots to get the feel and then I'm alright or as close to alright as I'll ever be. Once at full draw and at my anchor, the sight picture is the sight picture!

Agreed!

My feelings mirror that of Cyclic.  Takes a couple shots for the switch, but if the grips are closely matched, it makes it that much easier for me.

Shoot my Tall Tines l/b and r/c back to back every day! One thing I've learned is that I shoot the l/b better, but like shooting the r/c better...Ryan

I shoot all four of my bows (see below) as often as possible. Each one is differant with their own quirks. My goal is not to become an expert with one bow but to be good with all four of them.

Three of my five bows have such different grips I need a few days to adjust when switching them.  My Hill and my selfbow have straight grips; my Apex Predator has a slight locator; my Fedora recurve has a high wrist and my Shrew is "in-between".  The one that gives me the most problems is the recurve - it's super smooth and a joy to shoot but I think it's short length (52") makes it a little "touchy".

Andrew, what books are they?  (I'm interested for my 10 yr. old son.)

The Rangers Apprentice by John Flanagan there are 12 in the series.  It is medeviel fantasy.  They are geared for kids but I've enjoyed them too (I guess I am a 42 yr old kid!).  The ranger training is archery, tracking and stealthy woodland movement descriptions makes me think the author has done some trad bowhunting.

I can shoot both easily. It usually just takes a few shots to get reaquainted with either bow.

I must be the minority here.  I nearly drove myself crazy for a couple of years trying to switch back and forth.  I love the idea of the longbow and wood arrows and I have killed a few deer with them, but I shoot my recurves so much better that I only have one longbow left.  I figured I owed it to the critters to shoot what I was most competent with.

Exactly what I was thinking and reason for asking the question!

I go back and forth between recurves, longbows, and selfbows with no trouble.  It takes a few shots usually but that's no issue since I like to shoot anyway.  I always take a few shots befor I set up to hunt no matter what I am using.  Just don't think about it too much.  Let your mind to the tweaking.

I shoot both longbows and recurves pretty much an equal amount of time. What I have found is that with a "recurve type" grip on all of the bows that I own that there isn't any adjustment time when swapping out. That being said, I don't shoot any of the "straight type" longbow grips and I'm sure that if I did it would require some adjustment. I won't keep a bow in my stable that I can't pick up and shoot just as well as any other on the rack.

The GRIP..........is everything to me and my ability to shoot the bow consistantly well. If the grips are all very similar.........it won't be a problem.

Going from shooting my longbows to my recurve, I will shoot to the right the first few shots, then the old brain adjusts by itself. I don't recall ever shooting left with a longbow once shooting my recurve - can't explain that!

Just started shooting a longbow this year, but I'll go back to a recurve in August to get ready for the hunting season.  It seems to only take me a few shots to adjust as well, but my confidence is with the recurve under the often less than ideal hunting situations that often come up and the shot is pure reactive instinct.

It actually seems to help my shooting if I switch it up every other day.

I shoot both no problem going back and forth
but, about a month before season I know what
bow I'm going to hunt with and thats the only one I shoot.

I shoot long bows, recurves and a "Dark Side" wheeler, with out any issues. I do take a couple shots with each first.

Shoot longbows, a recurve and selfbows, paying attention to form, is key to shooting any bow well.  Every bow I have that is above 50 lbs. should have the opportunity to draw blood, but I have to be shooting the bow good before it will go hunting.
Thanks,

Its strange but i have shot nothing but my D style Bama Longbows for the last year or so! But I got this 66in bear Polar recurve and have been switching back and forth with ease, my longbows are 50lbs and the Polar is a 48lb so they are very close in poundage! since I have been shooting the Polar, I am shooting my longbows better than ever go figure! They are all 66inchers!

I predominately shoot longbows but, on occasion will have a recurve around. Right now it is a Martin Dream Catcher and it is taking some getting used to. Now that I have it almost tuned, I am hitting my target pretty darn good. If my shoulder holds up enough though, I will be hunting with my longbow at the end of next month.
