I've been thinking about going to 3 under instead of split finger. For those of you who shoot 3 under or have switched from split to 3 under is there any changes I'll need to make to my equipment? Do I need to have my bows re-tillered or can I just raise my nock point? If I can just move my nock point then what height would you suggest?
Retillering won't ne neccasarry. I high nocking point is (for me anyway). I actually couldn't tell you how high it is though as I adjust by arrow flight and not measurements.
I like 3 under as the arrow is closer to my eye. The only drawback is it does make your bow a bid louder bu that can be tamed with a little tinkering and patience.
I went to 3 under & it helped to improve my accuracy. It helps me to sight down the arrow better.
Can't remember if I adjusted the nock, and if so, which way.
Maybe somebody else can chime in?
I swithed to 3 under about 6 months ago and it really improved my accuracy. No tiller worries here, adjusted the nock just a little higher and all was good. The only negative is, I do seem a little less accurate at very long range.
Started getting arthritis in the first joint of my index finger and had to go to 3 under. I raised my nock point to about 3/4" and tied in another below. I raised the brace height 1/16" to address the noise issue. I was forced to make the change, but after a few weeks, I would say I am more accurate and pain free.
I switched from split finger to three under over 18 months ago. I didn't have to change anything. I don't notice anymore noise, and over half of my bows are tillered for split finger.
It works for me and quite honestly, I can't ever imagine going back. My sight picture is better, I get a cleaner release and my accuracy is much more consistant.

I switched to 3 under and my accuracy really improved. Higher nocking point is needed. I like a nock above and below my arrow. This helped me not to pinch the arrow and helped my accuracy. I put my tab right below the bottom nock. Don't worry about the tillering. Cannot see myself ever going back to split finger.
My Timberhawk is tillered for split and I shoot it 3 under with a tab. It has helped my accuracy, but this last shoot barely showed it! If only I could have shot the 1st half of the course like I did the 2nd half!
Switched last year. Had to move nock point up. Weird at first but has really improved accuracy. Caught myself split fingering a few times when I saw deer. I shoot a short bow and it put a bit more pinch on bottom finger but its not bad.
I switched to 3 under 6 months ago.. Like everyone else sigt picture and accuracy improved greatly as well as release. I did have to raise nock point a half inch or so.. I have shot split finger since then and it feels akward now.
why think about trying 3under? just try it.
special bow limb tillering is not a requirement.
I know what you're saying Charlie. This last shoot was tough on me as well. That's what made me think that I want to try something different to see if it helps.
When I was very new to this Trad thing, I started split finger style. I really didn't know any other way. I did some reading and began to learn the differences and potential improvements. I have used three under for several years now and agree with the "arrow closure to the eye improving accuracy" statements. I don't remember a noise difference probably because of my "newbie" level of understanding at that time. I find it interesting to think about. This is the way I choose nock point. I don't have a bow square but I grab a carpenters square off the work bench. Place one of the sqaures planes along side the string, while lining up an arrow with the other plane of the square. Then I can see where my nock needs to be installed. (I nock above the arrow, I think most folks do that shoot three under)Anyway I can see where the nock needs to go and I raise the nock one eight of an inch up the string and install.
If you are going to try 3 under, be serious about it to get an honest feel for it. Bump your nock point up aout a 1/4 inch, find a comfortable anchor point on your face and shoot only 3 under for about 2 weeks and see if its right for you. Going back and forth usually just leaves you shooting like crap both ways. I suggest using two nocks on the string and if you decide to stick with 3 under recheck your broadheads as you may have to fine tune with brace height and nock adjustments............YMMV
I tried 3 under several times in the past and went back to split. I tried it again this year and I think 3 under has finally clicked for me.
I have been shooting 3 under for a couple of years now, and it has increased my accuracy.
As for moving up the nock point; I am not so sure.
Some of my bows are tillered for split, and some for 3 under, and all are close to 1/2" above center. It just worked out that way. After tuning to where I was getting good flight, I measured, and 1/2" is where they landed.
The noise has to be worked on some though.
I have been fighting target panic for 5 years and I think 3 under is the next thing I will try.
I tried it one afternoon about a month ago and it felt weird but this time I am going to give it a solid two weeks and if that does not help I may go left handed.
I talked my hunting buddy into 3 under and since he made the switch his 3-d scores have jumped up 30 points.
