Is there a minimum number of twists that your string should have in it...for safety's sake or general wear-and-tear?
For instance, what if you get to your desired brace height, and there are only 2 or 3 twists running the entire length of the string. I recently had this happen and it just seems odd. I received the string straight from the bowyer, and I've doublechecked the length. I've also rubbed it down with wax/leather to loosen it up and I've taken probably 50 shots.
To me it makes the string look more flat than round. Anyone ever run across this?
I would get another string, I have had strings come loose on me from lack of twist.
Yeah, I was thinking that the twisted strands help hold it together and reinforce one another.
For some reason 1 twist per inch comes to mind. I am not sure that is correct. Maybe others could chime in. But 2-3 twist in the entire string. ITs too long. Order a new one.
Actually it's too short. If it were longer, I could twist it more and still be at the desired brace. As of now, it's almost completely untwisted and just barely long enough.
yeah..........dont know what I was thinking.
You had me doubting myself for a minute ;) . I sent the bowyer (string maker) an email explaining the situation. I ordered 2 strings and they're both like this. We'll see what he says. My guees is he'll just send a couple longer ones.
Get a new string. That string is too short for that bow and does not have enough twist in it to stay together.
Are they endless or flemish? If flemish you will want some twist in it. But an endless string doesn't need many.
it's endless
Your fine Endless strings work with no twist at all.
I spoke to the bowyer. He thinks I should put another 100 shots through it. He doesn't recommend very many twists and thinks it'll settle in nicely. This has been educational.
If it's a endless string you want "just" enough twist to make all the strands work together and NO MORE! Endless strings don't rely on twists to hold them together like a flemish string does. Sounds like to me you've got the perfect string length for a endless once it's broke in.
Yea endless loop string will break with too many twist. It sounds about right.
LC,
After 50 more shots, I thinkg you're right. Another 50-100 and I think I'll have put just enough stretch in it.
It also helps that he recommended raising the brace height another 1/8" - 1/4". I was a tad low before.
