Oops gotta make dinner, I should tell the story later tonight huh? :bigsmyl:
Tease
Then you better have pics.
I do have some pictures! But the story comes first on this one. I have a short bit of time so lets see what I can get written in my break time.
About a month ago I was chatting with my neighbor when they inadvertently let slip the whereabouts of a marvelously large beast. A beast which is legal to hunt for the fortunate few living here in my home state of Montana. The neighbor had seen the creature coming out just after dark and noticed that it seemed to be living in a certain location which was inaccessible by normal modes of transportation. I tried to act uninterested while talking to the nice lady next door but my brain was diving at mach 3 into devious schemes and plots which might be the downfall of said animal.
Of course I had to learn more about the habits of this creature if I was to harvest such a magnificent trophy. Therefore my next two weeks were devoted to practicing with my bow and scouting the tricky creature which I dubbed The Bandit, for his habit of coming out after dark; almost never did I see the rascal in daylight. Fortunately, my quarry did not live too far from my home, so scouting was an easy matter.
The big difficulty was figuring out how to ambush The Bandit while still having enough light to shoot in. After much thought and deliberation I set my trap. I cleared shooting lanes from my natural blind, which was as close as I could get to the den of my opponent, and began the long and nervous wait.
Is there frost out on the pumpkin, Trumpkin? Sorry just couldn't resist! P.S. Don't think I saw pics of your Whip.?
Anyway, you suspensful writin' so and so, you have intrigued us so privy us to the rest of this tale! Was it a little white dog owned by Jonny Quest??
The first evening on stand was uneventful and I retired to bed with a bit of disappointment. The Bandit had pulled a fast one on me. Examination of my stand site in the morning light revealed that The Bandit had indeed passed by, just later than I had been on stand.
The next evening I settled down for another long wait. I had lower expectations this time, and I was able to sit quietly waiting for my prey. On stand with me was my brother, his job being to assist in tracking if I was successful.
Now there came a moment on stand where I was just about to slip into a stupor. The wait was taking a toll on my nerves and the sun was slipping behind the hills far too quickly. In the last few minutes of dusk, just before pitch black struck, I heard The Bandit. His jowls were popping and crunching on the dog food which was a mere 7 yards from the screen less window of my house. The coon was stealing a meal from my poor, beleaguered puppy! I rose silently from my chair and hit full draw but all I could see was the black mass of the coon just off the back deck. "Now" I whispered to my brother, who flipped the light switch on and flooded the yard with light.
Had a coon doing the same thing at my house. Popped the lights on, and was about to shoot him, but decided that he/she looked far too cute, and that the dog food was worth it.
Couldn't do it.. lol
Warm up the BBQ
When the lights went on The Bandit looked up and my eyes zeroed in on my pre planned spot. The arrow was gone before I even thought twice, and The Bandit was in full retreat with my arrow dragging from the far side.
The tracking job was a whole twenty feet long, and there on the ground lay my first ever bow kill!
I had just shot me a coon! :jumper: :jumper: :jumper: :jumper: :jumper: :jumper:
Pictures on their way, just as soon as i figure out photobucket!

There we go! Finally figured the blasted picture thing out... Have a good evening everyone!
What are you going to do with it?
.
Cool!
Congrats! My first was back earlier this year. The dreaded tree rat. That fellow will make a nice hat and from what I'm told not bad to eat as long as they are cooked properly.

Buzzards gotta eat, too. :deadhorse:
We have a bad problem on my boss' ranch with them eating the fish food; climbing on and bumping the feeders knocking the feed out of them. We took 5 of them out last year.
Great story. Great shot. Man, their coats look mangey in the summertime.
I'm with PowDuck, that is a rough lookin coon!!! Good job on your hunt!

He (or I should actually say she) was a little scraggly in the fur department but it will still work really well for tying flies!
Good band on that one right there! Should make P&Y for sure, lol. Congrats on your first trad kill. Best wishes on making the next kill something that is more edible. Mike
Congratulations on a fine harvest. One less varmint!!
Congrats on your first trad kill!
Nice shot that is for sure. Coons are tough. Having one go down in 20 ft with a shot like that is great.
Can't wait to see the hat, or is he bloated up to the size of football back in the woods right now?
I will probably make the skin into fly tying materials rather than a hat...although the face was particularly pretty on this coon. I am going to try my hand at tanning on the skin. I would have eaten the coon, but it looked a little too mangy and scrawny for my liking. As it is, the coon will make fine fertilizer buried in the yard. This particular varmint had grabbed chickens from the neighbors and I wouldn't be surprised if it nabbed a cat or two as well.
That might go along with Mudd's grits.
:bigsmyl: Mudd needs some coon? if I'd known that I woulda airmailed him some after freezing it!
Congratulations on a fine first traditional bow kill. Seems you had to pick a spot pretty quickly.
Martin
Congrats!
Man!
It seems I can get dragged in on about anything that relates to food...lol and I resemble that remark too...lol
Did you say that he might be a cat killer?
Maybe you should have named him, given him his rabies shots and adopted him as a family pet...lol
Fellas I will eat almost anything... I have even tried coyote and beaver tail and during my time of physical and mental weakness I even stooped to eating a bowl of wall paper paste...lol
I will however give old fashion grits an honest try as soon as my body can handle them.
God bless,Mudd

Yes I did, I don't consciously remember picking the spot though. I was on autopilot by the time the light went on. I already knew his general orientation and where I wanted to hit him, so I guess I already had my spot picked out.

I guess we know where Mudd stands on cats!
Tell you what Mudd, there is a feral cat that came into the bait as well, shall I send that to you instead of the coon? I hear cat is very similar to rabbit.
