I`am 70 years old would like to know how many of you are 70 and above and still getting it done in the woods!
Me, me, me :saywhat:
73 and still hunt 70+ days a year
Im 72 and shoot almost everyday except this summer because it is 95 every day and doe's not cool down. I hunt deer about 45 days during the season. I am shooting 44# longbows now. I keep only two longbows now, one for backup and the other as my go to bow.
I will be married 52 years on July 11 to the same woman and I took my Ben Pearson 70# recurve with us on our honeymoon to Colorado so I have been shooting a long time.
Ken Denton
I'll be 70 on July 28, 2020! d;^)
Not there yet ,11 years to go....but there are days I feel 70!! LOL!!!!
Just 62 but I'm working on it a year at a time... :D
Will be 73 this September.
Best Wishes
I'll be 70 next March. The only differance from 50 is I stay on the ground. Life with out hunting is like an air plane with out wings.
:bigsmyl:
Jeff Foxworthy could have said,"You might be a redneck if you take your recurve on your'e honeymoon". Congrats to our elder trad brothers. Great post. Lord willing @ 70 me and my grandsons can bowhunt together.
I am proud to be 72 and still going strong thanks to bow hunting. It has helped me battle thru stroke 4 cancer surgeries chemo.and a lot of lifes problems.
Just both awesome and inspiring.
The Trad experience may add much to the quality of life.
Congrats!!
Great to hear ya'll are still enjoying the great outdoors.I hope in 20 years I can repeat this post. :clapper:
"How many of you are 70 and above?"........I weigh a whole lot more than 70!.....you do mean in pounds, right?!?
Now if you're talkin' years, I still got 23 of them to go 'til I hit the big seven zero. If I feel half as good as I feel right now, I'll be fine.
Will be 73 come Sept. 25 Th. Still making Trad. Bows, been donating them to International Safri Club for there National Convention here in Kansas City, Mo., also donated to the Kansas Bowhunters Ass. convention in Hutch. Kansas.
Can still draw and shoot 61# L/B, and 55# recurve. Not to shabby for an old geaser.
Will be making two or three bows every year to give away to local Archery Clubs here in the Kansas City area, and to help promote our Great sport of Traditional Archery, for both our Youths and Adults. :p
I am just a young pup of 65. LOL
Every once in a while my body reminds me that I am 72 ( 1939) My mind has not caught up with my body. However, I do remind my wife of 51years that I am 72 when she hands me the honey -do-list'
I am still hunting actively and planning hunts out in the future. There are a lot of animals on my bucket list! I use longbows in the 50 to 60 lb. range and try to shoot ever other day.
I am inspired that these brothers are still doing their thing and overcoming everything in their way to do it. Congrats brothers for such commitment.
Keep at it Boys! Ya'll make me feel like a pup @ 65...Doc
Lots of knowledge in that group! Keep it going guys. I'm just a young pup I guess at 59.
I am just barely in my 60's - will be 70 in November.
Just feels like it,you guys are my inspiration.
I'm 72 and still enjoy archery a lot. I hunt and go to traditional shoots twice a week. Am shooting 56 and 58 lbs at 30 inches. Also shoot self bows up to 57 pounds that I've made. Enjoy making them.
I was 70 this past June 19th. Still do most anything I want although some of it takes a little longer to get finished up. My bow is a 57# BW MAII built about 20 years ago.
Joe
You guys are awesome. Thanks for the inspiration and dedication to trad. I am truly a pup at 28, I love to learn from those of you who have experienced so much life and still live it with such vigor. Keep shooting straight!!!!
75 last March and still goin strong.

Turned 70 on July 11th still enjoy hunting as I did in my twenties, made my last elk hunt in Colorado two years ago physically not able to enjoy the high country any more.been through triple bypass and major back surgery, still shoot bows in the mid fifties but enjoy the bows in the mid to high forties more.
Will be 78 yrs young come this Sept.25Th 2016. I am still making Bows. I donate all the bows I make anymore. Don't Hunt anymore, but still having FUN knowing that some youths and adults are shooting my bows. Passing the Traditional Archery Sport on to the next generation of Archers. (ONESHOT)
Inspiring! ...keep them coming
I'll be 72 in a few weeks. I've had to stop doing some things I used to enjoy, like motorcycling and mountain climbing, but fortunately the old bod is still holding together for archery, and it has become the activity I enjoy most, and do most frequently.
75 and still at it.....at a more relaxed pace.
70 in 6 months, but I'm immature so that keeps you young!
Glad iam not as old as Bisch !! Turned 69 not going fast but still slowly now. Bob
I have a bow that is 73 years old .
I'm just knocking on 60 next month .
Turned 70 earlier this spring. Will be doing a 2-week DIY hunt for elk and mule deer in Idaho later this fall, and 3 weeks during the rut at my cabin in northern Wisconsin later in the year.
In the meantime, I'll be spending some of my time riding my Harley, repairing and paddling wood and canvas canoes, fly fishing, grouse hunting, and .......
I'm luckier than he##. Still in good health, have an understanding wife, and the time and almost enough money to do what I want to do. Retirement is good.
70 next month. Days I feel 25, days I feel 100!
I'll be 70 on 9/11.
Will turn 70 in November. Still getting it done, but I gave my climbing stand away 2 years ago, and just took delivery of a 45 lb longbow.
I was 73 last month. As long as these old knees and ankles holdout I will still be climbing trees. I am shooting a lot less weight than I used to. I shot an antelope, a turkey, and 3 deer last year with a 40lb at my draw bow and all fell within sight of where I shot from.
Jack
I'll be 70 in nine days. I still Hunt, fish and camp in the high country. I quit smoking at 22 and don't drink much other than beer. I consider myself lucky.
I'm more limited by a leg injury four years ago than age.
Come August 27th I'll kick the season off at 10,500 feet.
66 in June feeling great.Kip
In my 73rd year. Heading to Newfoundland for moose in Sept. This trad stuff has really given me a reason to stay active and healthy, for the most part. Just diagnosed with A fib today. Cardiologist appt. tomorrow to determine the extent of damage, if any. The thought of not being able to shoot or get out hunting is too dire to contemplate.
72 come October. Still bowfishing, bowhunting and spending as much time on the range as possible. Usually 3o4 times a week. being retired does have some perks.
74 here. Still flinging arrows but I stay under 50 pounds at my draw length.
72 in Sep.
76 last Dec
Will be 73 when the hunting season rolls around this fall.
I still have a couple of years to go, but I plan to join this august group then.
74 and still goin' but doing it much slower! Am in Colorado waiting on elk season but will be in Nebraska after antelope before that. Wish my body would stay as young as I 'think' my mind is :) . Have always been an 'XX size' and it has taken a toll on my knees. The canyons are getting deeper every year.
 and :clapper: to all of you keeping this great sport going.
At 40 I feel like a kid in the crowd. But I cherish the knowledge, wisdom, advice, and even a little bs that comes from those more experienced than myself.
Last year was my first entire season with out training wheels, and I hope I can keep this ride going for another 30+ years without them.
My hat's off to you!!!
Seventy five this last January and definitely feel it. Helped set up some targets for the Barryton shoot and was too tired to try them out afterwards :(
Well, I'm going to hit 'em all this weekend :)
I'm over 10 years away. I wonder if you opened that window up to late 50's and up what percentage of trad shooters that would cover?
Wow I didn't realize this thread started 5 years go where I commented...

Don't feel like that young pup anymore...but still feeling good @ 70 ...tippit
I am almost 67, but my wife equates that to being 6 or 7. Oh, well, I see no need to ever grow up. I first started archery in 1959. You guys at 70 or thereabouts don't seem near as old as you used to.
I was 69 when this was started. Stopped counting so I wouldn't think about dropping in bow weight. Quit smoking 32 yrs., ago, exercise more and taking better care of myself.
"If I knew I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself" Mickey Mantle.
Will be 76 in october and still hanging in there. Remember 76 is still just a number . I try to shoot every day. Had to go down from 60lbs to 50lbs but that was just to prevent possible future shoulder injurys. Hope tobe shootingin my 80's
72 opening day of bow season have to stay young, youngest of 18 grand chrildren is only 2 yrs old, can't wait to go on a hunting trip with him.
I'm 72 have 2 ladder stands to set up and need to move my bear stand. Will be shooting with the old guys at the Muzzy in few weeks.
70 come January. Still use a climber, but more ground blinds and just setting fence rows more every year.
When I first saw this post, I considered making a joke about my IQ. But, after reading every reply in this thread, I found inspiration and a sense of real respect and admiration for the older archers/hunters. I salute you folks. You are true treasures to our community and culture.
Tom
Does 69 count? I still have a way to go to make 70. It's amazing how quickly time passes when you're having fun!
Howdy,
This is my first post on here. I really enjoyed finding this thread. I'm 43, and have been trad bow hunting for just over a year.
I've spent quite a bit of time reflecting on how I want the rest of my life to go, and reading a thread by a bunch of folks in their 70's who are still out there trad bow hunting has been super inspiring.
Thanks!
Welcome Wose on your first post from a 73 year old :D
Other then one bad knee and one bad shoulder I still get out most days :archer2:
72 here, but that's only 10.2 in dog years.
Congratulations to all who have posted here! I'm 62 and thought that was "old" until I hit the number. I still feel middle aged most of the time.
From what I read here there is a chance "old" keeps getting "older" and we stay middle aged until He calls us home.
I think 70 is the New 50 :) Keep at it Boys & Girls if any want to Chime in.
74 in Nov. Climbed the hills at the IBO Trad World shoot today!
Looking forward to Sept deer opener.
Very pleased to hear from so many 70+ guys still enjoying our great sport!
I will be 75 in march 2017.
I'm too young to comment on this post ... LOL I'll see you old guys in a few years, time goes so quickly. I lost one of my best buddies this week, he was going to be 91 in two weeks ... keep active, keep young
Don't spend too much time reflecting Wose or you'll find yourself where most of the guys on this thread already are. Go out and enjoy yourself. This is an amazing lifestyle, ain't it. Welcome to the crew. :wavey:
Not for a few months. An older brother just 78 works long hours seven days a week so I am looking forward to being able to do the same.
You're looking forward to working long hours seven days a week? Are you nuts? :knothead: Retire and enjoy what little time there is left. :bigsmyl:
I'm 73 and along with my shooting partner, who's 84, we shot a round of 3D this week with my grandson. I followed that up by going zip lining with my grandson. Incidently,my 84 year old shooting partner is still able to kick my butt regularly on the Field/Hunter course.
Babbling Bob, I suspect your older brother is a beer taster. It would account for the long hours and your zeal to follow in his footsteps.
I turned 80 last March. Last fall was my 60th year bow hunting for deer. This is the cake they made for me at deer camp last fall.

Yes Toejammer he actually used to get a kick out of finding weird named beers a few years ago.
His (Larry Batten) time is spent 7 days a week running a bicycle ministry in Oklahoma City (Chain Reaction) where he was honored by KFOR (KFOR.com) Wednesday in a news piece called paying it forward (KFOR.com). His folks have reworked and donated over 1,900 bicycles for homeless needing rides to work since 2013.
Larry also preaches on Sunday afternoon below the I-40 bridge to a crowd of homeless, and often is up in the middle of the night helping alcoholics and those on dope, or he will be on skid row or walk into the homeless camps by the river wearing his wooden cross (for identification)to help. The news piece this wednesday by KFOR is listed on the net thing as under their Pay It Forward piece.
He sounds like a great guy and one to emulate.
I posted on this 5 years ago that makes me 77 now!I am still trying to get it done the hard way.
I spent 43 plus years and a few months working in the forest products industry and retired a year and half ago at 70. I'm now 71 and spend my time renovating our country place which is 16 miles from our residence. I do everything but anything dealing with electricity. :)
Deer and turkey plus a variety of other wildlife wander around through out the day and as long as I remain on the porch I'm accepted as part of the landscape. My hunting bow is always close by and I can pick it up and a few arrows and stump shoot out to 160 yards before our timber begins. I guess I still have some "kid" in me as I love to sail an arrow "up, up and away" simply for the joy of watching its flight. Although I've lost a step or two and occasionally forget a name, I'm about as good as I always was
You guys are what made/makes this the best trad hunting site on the net ( or any other kind of hunting for that matter ) . The experience level on here is irreplaceable.
turned 79 in March. Hunt on the ground now. Shoot my bow at 3d targets weekly. Hanging in there, just not as fast.
I'm 77 years old. Been shooting trad for over 70 years. The one outdoor activity I've never stopped doing and will keep on doing as long as possible.
I TURNED 77 IN APRIL
