I like Stos heads. Have used them off and on for a few years and plan to use them this year for elk. My question...do any of you guys modify or sharpen the blunt tips somehow or even think it's worth doing? I recently picked up the KME system and it works great on getting them sharp but that tip just whispers at my insecurity.
I've done it with other heads. It's easy. If you feel the need then go for it. Haven't tried a STOS yet.
The newer STOS heads need no modification IMO; but they do need to be made sharper. One of the best heads around.
I used STOS broadheads last year. Very strong, the tips don't curl, easy to sharpen and they fly true.
i did it with a light tanto design on old 160 Stos and it's one of the finest and strongest double bevel i get :archer:
As staed already new tip design 1 1/2 yrs old - tanto tip needs no tip modifications. Older pointed tip ones - I changed to tanto or chisel tip for strength but no need on new ones.
I thought the newer tip design went back further than that. The STOS I had,I bought at least 3 years ago and they had an excellent, tanto tip.A big selling point for me was the Stos had a very true ferrule and a precise and centered tip.I have never mounted glue on broadheads before where all of them spun true with no tweaking. The STOS did.If talking about the newer tip design,I wouldn't mess with it either, unless you wanted to hone it with a very fine stone. If you get that tip off center,it will be impossible to tell if your head is spinning true.I like to check the spin after a hit or miss on an animal to make sure everything is OK before it goes back into service.Of it's type,I think the STOS is one of the very best.
I shot Two deer with STOS heads last year one was at about ten yards would have pasted thru but the deer snap the arrow with its shoulder on its way out, then I shot one at 28 yards complete pass thru. All that was done to the heads was a little sharping job then there ready to go.
I cut off about 1/8th and then resharpened. Probably the old style. Would like to see a picture of the new design.
The tread that mentions a Slick Trick. The guy obvious never looked at a STOS. Just by looking you can see the STOS will out-penetrate.
