Title: Bowfishing's Golden Surprise
Post by: KentuckyTJ on July 03, 2011, 11:09:00 AM
Well, I bowfish quit a bit every summer and until now I have only ever seen one other golden carp. I suppose folks get tired of them in their yard ponds and turn them loose. Don't think they reproduce this way but I will be the first to admit I don't know everything.

I have seen a few of those in Nebraska, but not near that big. Nice one!

I was lucky enough to see an osprey come down right in front of me, and grab a 10-12" "golden Carp", and that was neat.

sweet! Ive only every seen a few and shot one myself. I almost felt bad for him as he was a few feet down in black water and the only reason i saw him was he was glowing. But I'm with ya as far as not really knowing how they get there or if they reproduce like that in the wild. As far as bowfishing goes thats a real trophy, big congrats!

When I was a kid in Ohio they were not that unusual in the wild.  After the Chagrin River would flood in the spring, it would fill all the holes in the gravel pit behind our house, and fish left there would breed.   Late in the summer and fall we'd go down with minnow nets and bread and "fish" for the fry to put in our aquariums.   As I recall, maybe one pull in every five or six might contain  either an all gold one or one that was gold with a black back.  That was what we were after.   When we moved back to town andI got older I gave my aquarium to the East Cleveland Library, and for a long time, they had a nice exhibit of "gold fish" that were actually my caught wild carp.  :^)

Should have netted that one. They can go for multiple thousands of dollars alive at that size. Seen some go for over $15,000.00 not as big as that.

Awesome Fish TJ!  Although I agree with David, that fish could have paid for your next big bowhunting trip.

Wonder how the skins would look over osage?

Great Trophy   :archer:

I used to shoot dozens of them when I was a kid and still shoot at a few. Guru's boy Cade shot at one on Friday night. Cyclic-River's wife Becca wouldn't let him shoot one last year. She did a great job on the big brown ones though.

I always thought they were just normal immature carp and that they turned the regular color as they got older. That is by far the biggest goldfish I've ever seen.

Great shooting TJ and congratulations.  I think you should get it mounted and hang it in your dining room!  :)

That's awesome Tom! I've never seen one before. I doubt you could've netted it without spooking it though.

That would look great in your den right beside your mounted walleye, dude! Seriously, you should consider having it mounted. That's a once in a lifetime trophy right there.

Congrats man!      :notworthy:

   Nice one! Bad news is that babys worth $500.00 + (alive that is) at your neighborhood pond supply store - Koi go for big bucks in that size range.

How cool is this?...... Way!!... I'm saying....

I have been wracking my brain trying to remember where I saw a pond with several in it.

I was told that the same regular goldfish that you can buy in pet shops only stay that size if they are kept in aquariums but if released into a large body of water they could grow to much larger sizes.

God bless,Mudd

PS: Thank you for sharing that with us.

Cool looking koi. But solid orange koi are just orange carp not worth that much that size maybe up to $300. And it would need to have perfect shape and scalation. OK Im a closset koi freak. But thats a real trophy.Bow skins ?.

Thumper is correct - the valuable ones have perfect patterns.  Do a little Bing or Google on Koi and see the value.

There are a few places here in Michigan where you can get into them pretty regular.  Sag Bay comes to mind.  I have also taken a few out of the Maple River.

Mounted it would be a cool conversation piece.  I know that my friend who has a sweet trophy room with some big bears and a lot of nice antlers gets more questions about the 3' gar pike with a fishing arrow sticking through it than all his other trophys combined.
