Had a chance to hunt nutria during the day a while back which is rare for me. Most of my nutria hunting is done on a golf course at night (for some reason the owners don't think it would be good for business if I hunt them there during the day :dunno: )
Anyway, I was hunting along a slough and spotted one on the bank eating grass. Everything from that point on was as much fun as any big game hunt as the stalk was on.
I slipped in to about 12 yards through some brush and tall grass, waited for a broadside shot and zinged one of our prototype two blade heads through his chest and into the dirt.
I was shooting a 45# Bear Super Kodiak, a bow that I'm hoping to deer hunt with this fall. I've never hunted with a bow that light, but I sure do like shooting this one.

Nice hunting. BTW, I know for a fact quite a few hunters in the state of Louisiana eat nutria.
Ok ill bite, what the heck is a nutria? This California boy whants to know.
Almost looks like a musk rat.
Nice shooting by the way.
that is what i was thinkin muskrat but i would also like to know and when are you gonna have your 2 balde heads out on the market i would like to try them this fall on some ks deer
that makes some good sausage!@!!!!!!
Nice bow for sure,I like mine.I glad you enjoyed your nutria hunting,I have quite a few around here too,I need to give them a try.
Great job Stan! How's the 2 blade coming along?
Cool Stan! :clapper:
Looks like fun!
Alright Stan! Now show us that prototype....Lol! Sorry Stan couldn't resist. Looks like it definitely got the job done, nice Nutria.
Any idea yet on your 2 blade, or are you guys still having all the fun testing? Thanks Stan for putting up with me, and thanks for the post.
John
Nutria looks like a giant rat. They're vegitarian, eating roots and grasses. White/pinkish meat, kinda resembles pork.
Haed as heck to skin. Pelts, down here, aren't worth much. We used to shoot 'rm for fun after hunting season went out. Had an over population of 'em on the Mobile Delta, so they were glad for us to kill as many as possible.
I guess if you knew how to cook it, the meat would be good. I just couldn't get past the Giant Rat look. Ain't much on eating rodents. But if times get much rougher, I'll be able to tell you how they taste!
JAG/Johnny
Looks like fun!!
A nutria is a big ol' water rat. They do look a lot like a muskrat. They are tough on golf courses because they build dens near the ponds that collapse under the mowers.
The two-blade is coming along. I believe I've got the steels for the ferrule and the blades that I like and the heat and cryo tempering where I want it. Now it's just a matter of waiting for the production runs to come in. That will probably be longer than I want, but I think we'll have them available for this season.
Hey Stan! How heavy are the protos? Dainty or big and manly?
apparently they were brought here from over seas. they are a destructive rodent and there is an open season on them if im not mistaken. i would have to check the nc regs to be sure. there are plenty of nutria here in eastern nc. rv
Im like you JAG they don't seem to appetizing...but I bet theyd be a blast to hunt and that was a heck of a shot StanM!
hey congrats! :)
Nice shootin'! I bought some Nutria strips for string silencers, and some for a rest on the auction site awhile back. They worked well.
Great shot Stan! Can't wait for your new head to come out! Nice bow too.
Nutria cacciatore is very good. There is a recipe posted under ine of vanilla gorillas threads from earlier this year. Next one I shoot is getting BBQ'd on the grill.
looks like a great target and an even better shot!!! Good job
When I was a kid, people would buy all color phases of them and it was to be big biz to raise them like mink... they were to be a sure thing to make big money!
They didn't go over in the clothin industry for many reasons I can't remember...I was pretty young then... so YEAH..it was a long time ago.
Down below my Uncles, a guy had a block building with pens in them full of blonde, black, white, grey..nutria.
Many people when the market went bust, just turned them "loose". Ergo, where the winters weren't too tough, they dug in and reproduced like good rodents do... Black Water Swamp federal refuge (E.Shore of MD) had horrid problems and paid guys to trap, kill, poison... and they pretty much got them under control... but they live much like big muskrats tunneling and such.
Now, Jag...ya don't eat rodents? What about bunnies and tree rats...they're rodents! :jumper:

Hey Steve, how are you? Good to hear from you. Initially we'll have the heads in 100, 125 and 150. Hoping to get some in weights above 150, but that won't be until some time early next year.
Fried nutria rat ain't bad. I've had it a couple of times.
In New Orleans they tried to pass it off as a delicacy but it doesn't appear to have caught on as I don't see it advertised anymore. There are so many of them there was a $4 bounty on each tail turned in. They tried to create a food market to help control the numbers.
DocNock, I do eat bushy tailed woods rat! My bride can sure cook up frying pan of woods rat and gravy! But unless you drop 'em in the water, they don't look too much like a BIG RAT!
Great shot on the noot' Stan!
Lookin' forward to trying out some 150 gr 2 blades.
Shoot straight, Shinken
