I am fairly new to the Trad scene. I have decided to make my own arrows. I shoot right handed, do I need to order right wing feathers or left wing. Is there a right or wrong way to go. I just want to get the best arrow flight I can. Also what's the best feathers to buy Trueflight or Gateway or ....???? Thanks for any help in advance. :notworthy:
I have never noticed a difference. As long as all the feathers on the arrow are the same you are ok.
Some say True flight has better bases. I agree. One advantage of right wing is that screw on points tend to stay tight where left wing points will come loose due to direction of spin of arrow. As point stops in target the spin of the shaft while using left wing makes shaft spin to loosen point.
Same here, no difference that I am good enough shot to notice.
For myself I prefer LW because they index with my anchor better. With RW I tend to cut my hand shooting my longbow. I shoot an elevated rest on my recurve but still prefer LW due to feather alignment. Only drawback I see is that LW tend to loosen points on impact.
In essence, it just comes down to personal preference when choosing between left or right wing feathers.
I shoot both, right and left, and don't notice any difference. My points don't get loose, but I shoot wood shafts with glue on points.
If your points come loose, put a little string wax on the threads.
Oh, I prefer Trueflight feathers.
I like the left wing better, though they shot the same, the left wing seems to give me better clearence at the bow shelf. Field points do have a tendence to come loose but it's nothing a pair of pliers will not take care of.
I am with TSHOOTER the right wing feather cut my bow hand also. Trueflight do have a better base in my opinion,Gateway are to wide.
Thanks guys for all of the responses. I think I'll go with right wing Trueflights. Thanks again for the help. Off to the Trueflight website to do a little window shopping :D
Are you sure you don't want left wing?
John
I am a left hand shooter and I shoot right wing I have also shot left wing it makes very little differance, however if you are going to get your feathers from a box store they will only have right wing feathers. The bases on tru-flight feathers are more consistain and the feathers on gateways are better looking sotake your pick of what you wish to shoot just remember where you are going to buy them from or if you are going to order them all.
Yup,I would go with LW, can be an issue shooting some bows with RW as they can grab ya. I also just cannot get used to the opposite spin, been looking at LW forever in flight. Old archery guy told me RH shoot LW and LH shoot RW for reasons above. Shawn
Put a little string wax on your points, keeps them tight.
Right Wing all the way! Left Wing Politics are going to ruin this country.......oh - you were asking about arrows and fletching. :knothead:
I did a bit of research( web searching) awhile back about left or right. They did l-r offset straight, helical. Can't remember where but the testing amounted to how many robin hoods they got with each fletch. the lw helical where ahead by a few compared to rw helical. The others where behind. Basicly if it works for you, go with it.JG
I shoot both LW and RW,I'm RH and see no difference.Plus if you are shooting carbon arrows, they have tunable nocks so you can rotate the feathers for best clearence.
Always shot Left wing, cause that is what my jig clamp is. ;)
RH, Left wing, and Truflight.

I'll second that, and I like Grey-barred straight from the turkey.

Exactly....I tried to explain that once here, and it turned into the dangdest argument for no reason...some folks just could not understand what I said and it was just what you wrote.....
Its the same with Bheads ....and loose bheads will bend adapter posts much easier....and it the main reason they bend.
I'm RH and Shoot RW.
Trueflight for me...Gateway's base is to thick.
right wing
I just haven't had the same experience with right wings keeping the points tight.I have built at least 6 dozen sets of arrows, right wing.If I don't Loctite the threads, they will be loose in 2 or three shots.I have been using strictly right wing for 3 years. They loosen the same as the left wings.I have no explanation.I thought when I switched to right wing that would be an added benefit. The theory makes sense but it just hasn't happened.
Make sure you use a right wing clamp to instl those right wing feathers!
I put a drop of removable loctite on the broadhead threads, works a little better than wax for keeping them tight. Left wing or right wing should not matter with the bows that were listed. I have found that with Hill style longbows using wood shafts that there can be a slightly better arrow launch with left wing on right handed bows and that can be tweaked a bit by rotating the nock. However, you need to decide in advance if you are going to rotate the nock, as it will turn your grain.
Yes Jim....both will vibrate loose in flight due to paradox....what I was mostly referring to is Bheads tightening on impact instead of loosening due to arrow spin and thread direction.
I use plumber's tape on my Judo's and Bheads both.
I like the plumbers tape idea. I will def do that with my Bheads. As far as the feathers go I went ahead and order right wing trueflights and some kick tail wraps from onestringer. I will post pics of my first arrows once I get everything.
in all resoning i asked this question some where befor and got the answer it doesn't mater the wing left or right if shooting off a rest ( but i do agree with terry on the point stuff right stays tight) but if shooting off the knuckel and are right handed you want left wing and the oposite for the other hand the reason for this is the natural kurl of the feather won't dig into your knuckel once the arrow is released for flight it took me a long time to understand it but i get it now i guess i still think shoot what you like

YEP!!!
Probably the only time it will come into play would be if you are shooting a single bevel b'head.
Just don't mix'em on the arrow.

Right wing, Left wing, politics they are ALL going to ruin our countries...
I shoot LW and I'm RH, no problem with glue on points.
Right or left wing it makes no difference. Historically the guys that picked up the turkeys for loading on the truck were mostly right handed They ruined more feathers carrying extra turkeys with the right hand by the right wings. The left wing feathers were more plentiful because of this and cost less. Broken wings bones stopped this practice.
