Title: What's on the spit pilgrim?
Post by: Ron LaClair on June 25, 2011, 09:38:00 PM
The Compton Rendezvous is over for another year but the memories will linger.

This was at our camp on Saturday night. This rig was purchased from the blacksmiths that were set up on the grounds. The fare is, A leg of lamb on the rack and pork loin on the spit. It fed a dozen people with meat left over.

Makes you wanna say, "What's on the spit Pilgrim....grown particular?"

One of my favorite movies; just bought for $5 in a bargain bin.  That pic is making me drool; I can literally smell the meat cooking!

Mason and I watched it yesterday too..... again, for the 150th time. That is one of the best parts of the movie. Mason can quote the ending of that scene where Chris is mounting up to leave and telling Jeremiah, " March is a green, muddy month down in the bottom, farmers like it mostly....."

That is one nice setup you got there from the Compton blacksmith Ron. You are fully outfitted for any kind of vittles a man could want around a fire now. I need to get him to build me a fireplace tool set one of these days. All the stuff in stores is cheap Chinese junk.

Do you by any chance happen to remember the blacksmith's name? Possibly a website?  It does seem to be on the opposite ends of the spectrum... that is a blacksmith having a website.   :)

The book is much richer. Less a hero more a man, that life threw a curve.

One description that stands out for me is him making a bivy in the snow -under a skin I think. He loved his wife.

Looks good Ron.  Those setups from Raccoon Forge are perfect for campfire cooking.  My dad and I have drooled over them for many years now.  We finally pulled the trigger for a set this year as well.

Favorite Jeremiah Johnson Quote:

I ain't never seen 'em, but my common sense tells me the Andes is foothills, and the Alps is for children to climb! Keep good care of your hair! These here is God's finest scupturings! And there ain't no laws for the brave ones! And there ain't no asylums for the crazy ones! And there ain't no churches, except for this right here! And there ain't no priests excepting the birds. I've actually got two of these sets. I bought one from Raccoon Forge the first year they set up at Compton and it has seen a lot of use. For some reason it didn't get packed with the camp gear this year and we had a lot of cooking we planned on doing so I bought another set this year. The new one has the spit attachment which I really like. Anyway now I have two sets so I shouldn't be without one again.

This is from last years hunting camp, we're having butterflyed  venison back straps for breakfast. The height of the grill is adjustable, a very handy feature.

Yumm,

I'm surprised you haven't posted the shot from Grayling shoot a few years back where we had the whole grill filled with 1.5 inch lamb chops. That's a great grill to cook on buddy.

For any who are interested, "The Movie" is on AMC tonight at 8 p.m. EDT:  http://movies.amctv.com/movie/26037/Jeremiah-Johnson/overview.

YMMV, but I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy seeing it if you're a Trad Gang member. And you'll never look at a snowbank quite the same way afterward . . .
