Title: Arrow selection for old Bear
Post by: JD Page 1965 on June 25, 2011, 05:47:00 AM
I am a new to your site and have a question..I resently found a 1970's Bear Kodiak Hunter 45# @ 28" draw (RH). My question is what would be a great hunting arrow and broadhead combo for hunting deer? I would like to use carbon shafts and feathers of course. Any help would be much appreciated!   :banghead:

You may use a software to calculate the spine, and make a good choice of shafts and broahead weight. I know this one  http://heilakka.com/stumiller/  by Stu Miller. It's free.

Thanks Lincoln. I was hoping that someone had personal experience with one type arrow/broadhead combo while hunting that is proven to be good in the field. I will most certainly take a look at the charts and see what they have to offer. Thanks for the info!

For those bows I use a Carbon Express 150 with some 200 grs and cut 29".

Cacciatore, Thanks for the information, whats the 200 grain broadhead you use? Have you put this combo on any deer?

2016 AO with a 1964 Bear broadheads (aka greenie)
Great combination and as traditional as you can get.

Carbon Express is a good arrow but I am a fan of Beman MFX's. For my #45 bows I use 600's cut to 29.5 inches, 50 grain insert and 125-150 grain head. For a #45 bow I would use the new 150 grain two blade VPA or something similar.

Earl & Tomas, Thanks for the heads up! I am currently in Iraq and doing arrow research gives me something to do and gets me fired up to get home at the end of August and do some shooting..I will be home for some early season bow hunting in Indiana and I want the most lethal combination out there..so thanks again for the info!

I agree with Tomas, I would say a .600 spine and if you draw 28"s or a tad more keep them 30"s and go with 175 grains and anywhere up to 225 grains up front and see what weight gives you the best flight. 150's will be way too stiff unless full length and you would still need 275 or more up front.
