I recently built a Black Black Bear Warf and now I am trying to fine tune some FOC arrows for the bow.
Setup:
- Black Bear Warf with "JSPEN" plates (they have additional angle for preload)
- TradTech BlackMax Carbon 45# Short Limbs pulling 46# @ 28" and 41# @ my 26" draw
- D97 String (SBD String on the way!)
I have been shooting 31" Heritage Carbon Express Arrows with 125 grain points. The arrows weighs 460 grains and shoots well, but a bit soft. If I put 100 grain points on it does much better.
I was wanting to get into shooting FOC for for the hunting season and Gold Tips are less expensive so I decided to try that option.
I started with a 5575 at 29.5" and a 200 grain point...it was very stiff so I kept going longer. After piddling with it for a bit at the local shop, I now have a 5575 bare shaft tuning kit, with 1/2 length increments, and settled on a full length 5575 with 175 grain point, it is pretty spot on and offers a 17.7% FOC according to my calculations. Without fletchings, they weigh in at around 450 grains.
I am wondering what advantages or disadvantages there are using such long arrows with my 26-26.5" draw? Also, in hindsight, I probably should have started with 3555s...I do plan on getting some 50-55# limbs in a bit so I can always cut them down later for that purpose.

I shoot a PCH 58" 46# at 28", but I draw 26". I ended up with CE 75s cut at 27" with a 7/32 x 11/2 tension pin glued in the point end...the pin weighs 54 grains. This setup with a 125 grain point shoots great out of this bow.
There is no disadvantage to shooting longer arrows.You should know though,that you don't start getting tangible gains with FOC till you get to 19% and above.10%-18%,all the same.
What size Carbon Express Heritage are you shooting that it is soft?There is nothing wrong with shooting full length,I let my tuning determine my arrows final length.
Go with .600 spine with 225 up front and play with your plunger. You will have to go well up in point weight if you shorten them. 29"s try 275 up front. I shoot a hoyt spectre warfed and have it set at 46#s at my 28.5" draw and shoot 30 inch .600 spine with 190 grains up front. You can get away with a lot more up front with carbons than most anyone thinks. Shawn
The carbon express arrows are 150s. After shooting a few of the Gold Tip 5575s full length with 175g points, I am satisfied. It is shooting darts and the bareshaft groups right in with the fletched. Total weight for fletched arrow is 478 and I am getting 146 fps at my 26" draw. My CE are only 460 grains and the gold tips are a bit quieter and I like the feel better.
