what do you'll use as shelf material.
i have been using mole skin and it seems to wear out really fast. and i was looking for something that is more durable and easier on my arrows.
could you also post pictures of how you build your selfs. i am about to have a bow built and was wondering the best way to cut a riser. i generally use a toothpick and moleskin to build up the area above my grip.

I use the fuzzy side of heavy duty velco. The peel and stick.
-
I use the felt you buy at the hardware stores (Lowe's, Home Depot) for the bottom of furniture feet. It is thick and tough. Lasts a good long time and has a adhesive backing. Comes in a pack about 4" x 5".

I really like the stuff that Jim Reynolds from Thunderstick Archery sells. I think its just black calf leather with the hair still on. It the quietest material I've used. I'm sure many sponsors carry it.
I quit using velcro when I drew my bow on one of those cold silent mornings. Couldn't believe how loud it was scraping across my arrow.
-
thats one thing that i forgot to mention. i hunt from ground blinds in the south texas brush and i need something that is very quiet.
-
sealskin works for me.<><
-
Aligator leather is what I use, your bow will wear out first.
-
My recurve came w/ sealskin and it wore down pretty quick. After the hair came off, there was some noise when I drew my carbon arrow back.
-
Aligator leather?....never heard of that for a shelf material. Where do you get that?
-
I have used velcro for years without problems. It Aint broke and I aint fixen it. Oh Yea cost almost nothing per unit.
-
Terry Ya get from Alligators....Ya got to be rely sneaky....
Seariously....Befor I sent my Saxon to Dano to be refinished, I took the shelf material off, and I shot the bow a few times and was surprised at how quiet it was....
I think if your shelf material wears to quickly, your tuning is off....To much pressure for what ever reason, nocking point etc....
-
I tried seal skin and it wears out very fast, The wool side of velcro seemed pretty good, and plain leather is OK but I recently tested the Cari-bow Peregrine and it came with Beaver Tail leather on it. It is the best shelf material I have used.It is quiet looks great and it doesn't show a mark after shooting it since early fall.

Any ideas on where to purchase some of that beaver tail material?
Tim ;-)
-
Pete, I had the same experience with seal skin.
-
Tim,
There's a feller selling a whole beaver tail for $10 in the Quivers and Leather goods classifieds.

Anyone know where to buy beaver tail for shelf?
-
Pete and Terry, have you ever tried cordavan leather or sharkskin. They are both very tough. If you want to try them, let me know.
-
Abe Penner from Cari bow sells whole beaver tails in black or brown for $20.00 ea.
-
Eagle's Flight Archery makes and sells sideplate/shelf of beavertail, shark, and cordovan. We are a Tradgang sponser.

Interesting variety! I have been using plain leather (deerskin) and never noticed it being loud. On my longbow I just made the shelf and shield from a single piece of leather. Recurves usually work better with a separate shield and shelf due to the sharp angle where shelf and sideplate meet.
I couldn't get as good arrow flight with sealskin on my longbow. My son's Herter's recurve likes it though.
Something in me just rebels at the thought of sticking velcro on a trad bow. I know, fiberglass is not all natural either, but it's a personal thing.
Beavertail sounds intriguing, but the back of a worn-out deerskin glove is a lot cheaper.

I use the stuff that satelite archery makes(bear hair) that little piece of leather does not seem to wear out at all and I prolly shoot 3000 arrows a week. My go to bow has had the same one for 3 years. they give you enough fur for 3 applications and I change it or swap it over MAYBE once a year.$5 cant go wrong .. I've tried all the fur stuff holds up for about a week, then it's done.

do you use just the leather o do you also use the bear hair ?
i just put some cordovian sp? leather and it seems to hold up great but if i get any dirt on it it becomes very noisy.
-
We sell it for the sideplate and shelf.
-
I use the hair as well, Nice and soft yet dense enough to last...
-
I have used the bear skin the last 2 times I will look for something different next time. I like the sound of gator skin.what part?
-
i use velcro the soft part real slick.
-
I use dear hide and the rough side of leather. Both work equally well. I have been unable to wear them down as of yet.
Of course, your fletching configuration will play into wear and noise and flight as well. Just be mindfull.
Good hunting and God bless.
-
seal skin, bear hair, velcro and leather.
i ain't tried 'gator and sharkskin...i will eventually, though.
-
Don, you left out beavertail.
