Dang I was hoping it wouldn't come to this.
Ok, I'm going to combine a couple of the ones already done. I'm going to start with a short senario.
You have entered a raffle for a week long caribou hunt in Labrador...and WON!!!
You've practiced in anticipation for all possible situations. You've researched on what you need to take with you and talked to several experienced Tradgang members and pretty much know what to expect. You are there!
You've been out a couple of days and have seen lots of caribou, but not yet close enough for a shot when one morning you and your guide are climbing a low rise and as you are able to see over it, there they are, a herd of maybe 20 with a few nice bulls. They appear to be coming in your direction!
You duck back down quickly and immediately start to look for a place for an ambush. All there is is a small outcropping of rocks, not tall enough to sit or kneel behind........
So you are lying on your back, and a nice bull is trotting up and luckily enough on the side that you need him to. He is 12ish yards and as he passes you get a slightly quartering away shot...
Again, the first shot counts as double. Practice all you want before you submit your entry.
Three arrows (2x)(1x)(1x)? on yer back?
Ya (sheepishly). One trick is to take a deep hold of the string, like Terry does for his upside down shot. Then pull your fingers back to the first knuckle. That pushes the arrow shaft against the strike plate.
Gonna have to scout the red ants before I take this one
:)
I have a question. Wouldn't it be more likely that you'd be on your belly and not on your back? I've never, ever, after hunting all sorts of creatures, including caribou, in a situation much like you describe, found myself on my back. On my belly, yes. On my back, no. Just asking.
At any rate, I'll shoot it how you want, but I think you ought to at least post a video of you doing it :) .
An interesting shot to say the least but holding the string like that is normal for me..
12 yards, laying on my back.
1991 Sky Sky Hawk w/ GT Trad 35/55's 470gr.
2X4 + 4 + 8 = 20
Sorry for the blured picture, took the scond after I pulled the arrows.

Gonna have to try this when the rain dries up...
I can get this shot off shooting split, but no way 3 under. I have never been able to keep the arrow on the shelf with a back bending cant without having two fingers making nock contact. My nocks do fit lose once on the string so always have a bottom nock to keep them from sliding down. Anyone else have luck shooting back canted 3 under?
I hear ya Keifer.
Now that is a tough position, and not one that I have ever thought to practice. I didn't score well......but I did better then I thought I would after a half dozen practice shots (I threw them all over the place).
My Score: 6x2 + 0 + 4 = 16

I had better wait for the tempts to drop outside or I won't be getting up off the ground...lol
god bless,Mudd
Come on Mudd it only 98 here.So I'm going to wait till later also.
I've heard of someone who shot while lying on their stomach. I think they had to raise their torso up off the ground. I've tried that and I can not do it.
I can try and post a vid of my attempts. I've shot that way before, not great shooting, but I was able to do it.
I missed an antelope one year off my stomach, if it wasn't for the string catching my sleeve, I believe I would have got him. I used to practice a lot. This one should be fun!
Ok I tried a few practice attempts,finally gave up,sweating like a pig,first shot a miss then 2 sixes for a 12. (http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/LarryS54/Picture1477.jpg)
Since we have been in rain for 11 straight days and the forecast is for a few more, this might be interesting. And the skeeters are about a pound apiece where I am now (Ft. Nelson, BC), so they should add to the frivolity.

I shoot 3 under and have tried this shot before. The only thing that worked was putting my index finger on the arrow to hold it there. Gotta be careful though cause it can screw up the shot in tons of ways. Definitely a bit of a handicap in this round...
As seen in one of my practice videos, I am known to have a beer or two while practicing. So ending up on my back with my bow in hand to shoot isn't really a stretch for me :biglaugh: :biglaugh:
Well the temps dropped back into the upper 80's and with me just dying to try this, I gave it a go.
Again I shot "Roi", Osagage Royale 66" 52@28.
I hope that the fact that I used a Styrofoam sled to lay on is ok? I doubt this old body could stand getting down in the rock of the driveway...lol
(http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc158/mudd57/An%20Archery%20Shoot/DSC01589.jpg)
I am very pleased with my 1st arrow. I seriously doubt I could do any better.
I went on to prove that point with my next two shots...lol
Like before my 4 Fletch "Snag" arrow was my #1, followed by two 4 Fletch "Magnus" arrows.

PS: Magnus I want you to know your arrows were not in any way at fault... It was and is this old sweating fat man trying to breath really warm and moist air while in a very unnatural position...lol
Good shooting Mudd not as easy as it sounds.
holy cow mudd yeehhaa
PS: Magnus I want you to know your arrows were not in any way at fault... It was and is this old sweating fat man trying to breath really warm and moist air while in a very unnatural position...lol
Come on Roy, don't be so hard on yourself. Your not old. LOL Just kidding. great shooting there.
Great shooting mud
Good Lord Mudd, you've got the touch for sure..
That is really good shooting Mudd! I've been practicing this evening. I have sore muscles from getting up and down off the ground. I finally got two arrows in the plate in one round. I'm going to practice some more, Lord willing, and post my score later in the week.
I found a way to keep the arrow on the shelf. I had one arrow that would stay on the shelf using the technique I mentioned before. I padded my string with duct tape but that didn't help much. Here's what worked best:
I cut about a six in strip of plastic off a milk jug, folded in half and taped it together. I
held it in my bow hand so that it stuck up far enough to hold the arrow on the shelf. It doesn't seem to interfer with the shot.
Nice thinking Bona I just used my index finger still didn't help that much. :biglaugh:
I figure the reason the index finger doesn't work that well is because that is usually the main finger involved in the grip, unless you don't grip the bow at all I suppose.
I guess that makes sense. :smileystooges:
I just took a deep hook on my string and it helped a bunch.
God bless,Mudd
Does on our back really mean shooting across our chest flat on our back? I obviously have never made this shot, but from being on the ground trying, I imagine I would draw and roll off my arm and in a sitting position in the same motion (or at least that is how I think I would do it). :D
Just trying to make sure before I go lay in dead grass.
Flat on your back was the intent. I don't think I could shoot the way you discribe. It's too much of a production to get from a lying position to a sitting postion for me. :help:
It would be a good one to call when you win!
I carnt cont on two hands how many times i have stalked into animals on my belly but never shot on my back before this is sure going to be interesting :help: but im up for anything as long as its legal lol b.glass good thinking on your part will post my results up later in the week.
Looking forward to this one. I've never tried shooting on my back but I am getting pretty lazy, might be a good way for me to hunt between naps.
I think I'm going to need a bigger backstop for this one.
I'm going out of town, so I'll try this later in the week.
As bad as my shoulder is feeling, I'm almost glad I can't shoot this week. :D I have never even thought of shooting while lying on my back. I seem to remember one of the 'golden rules' of shooting was to NOT pinch the nock. Oh, I'm sure going to try it when I'm all healed up. I just may have to find some arrows I don't mind losing. ;)
Rusty
This is a quick little practice video for this challenge. Used Mudd's deeper hook idea and the arrow stayed true on the shelf.

I can't even shoot that good standing up.. :biglaugh:
[/QUOTE]Good shooting 61!
I can't even shoot that good standing up..
You did great in your practice Osage 61!
I wish I could just sit straight up the way you did to get your next arrow...lol
I placed mine at my finger tips so all I had to do was reach out and pick it up...lol No sitting up, those looked to much like a regular ole sit up for my comfort...lol
God bless,Mudd
PS: I'm glad the deep hook worked for you as well.
I have to get a armguard for this one
This was obviously tough
(http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q291/bjornweb/photo-8.jpg)
Adam got 12 and I shot 16.
Well, I shot today at this elusive caribou, figured I wouldnt have a milk jug to make any adjustments to the shot,(the deep hook helped)
Shot the first arrow(and the second & third) a big 4(2x)=8+0+0=8TOTAL.
I didnt lay on any rocks but had to squint in the durn sun which made things more life like...
I think the only way I want to see em is pulling Santa's sleigh around Dec 24th
I shot triple 6's for 24. I'll post pics up later tonight or tomorrow.
yikes...
Hard to manage shot.
I tried everything I could think of to keep that arrow on the shelf.
My nocks just don't grip that tight. Probably doesn't help to have 200grs hanging out at the tip either. I tried building the serving up, shooting with an "Indian" grip on the string so I could push up with my thumb...notta. The string just wants to turn in the nock.
I'll have to remember not to try to hunt with this shooting position in mind..lol
Congrats to those who can do it!
wk4 score...0
Here's pics. I'm throwing this one to sheer luck. During practice they weren't good, and when I tried after they weren't good either. :dunno:

The X'd through holes are last week.
Here is my shooting. Green is first shot for a 24
(http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h160/steadman_2006/WEEK3001.jpg)
Well, here's mine:
First shot was a 8, second a 6, third a 4. So I think that's a 26. It was total luck. The first two had horrible flight. On the third shot, I switched from my Bigshot glove to a Damascus glove and got tons better flight.
I did try to shoot an arrow off the opposite side of the bow and promptly launched it over the target and into the garden.
Can I suggest that from here on, we pick shots that we would actually use in the field? I don't think there is one of us here who would shoot at any living thing while laying on their back. I'm not saying this wasn't a fun exercise, but let's face it, other than for trick shots, it's not very practical. I hope this doesn't sound too "jerkish". I do think that these shoots can open people up to some different useful positions that they maybe haven't used before, but this one is one of those that I would never attempt, or even suggest someone attempt, no matter what their skill level.
Sorry, I was hoping Zradix would take it. The first few folks raised the bar pretty high. I feel like practicing unusual shots makes us better at the more conventional shots.
Anyway, again, I'm sorry. Hope nobody throughs thier back out or something. And no, you don't sound "jerkish". :)

Well, I practiced all I wanted; I used Mudd's "deep hook"; advice and tips from "moebow, McDave,Javi and others from The Shooter's Forum; and then I let them fly. Looks like a 36. First arrah 10 second arrah 8 and finally another 8. Truth of the matter is that I must be lazy because I really enjoyed laying down to shoot

Holy cow! That is amazing for sure!! Fantastic shooting Osage 61! :notworthy:
I can't shoot like that standing up...
Practiced this yesterday and sent a few wild arrows past the target. Shot 6 arrows from this position this morning, then set up the plate.
Yellow nock was the first arrow. 30 points for me. I have to say that I am extremely unlikely to ever use this shot since I use a back quiver, and taking off my quiver in the field rarely happens.
Really good shooting!!!
Osage
Just looking at the pic larger size and it appears you have 2 tens!
Nice shooting!!
if that is a 8" plate, what are the dimensions of the rings?
1" circle, then a 4" circle, then a 6" circle?
wow, i just tried shooting at a 6" bowl on my back from 12 yards and it is NOT easy. pretty freakin awesome practice though! now if the fire ants would leave me alone!
L.R.
Osage is a tough act to follow, here's my meager attempt:
(http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m635/jackdynne/TradGang%20Fun%20Shoot/th_IMG_0807.jpg) (http://s1135.photobucket.com/albums/m635/jackdynne/TradGang%20Fun%20Shoot/?action=view¤t=IMG_0807.jpg)
First shot was the 6 ring, two fours followed. To be honest, I was just glad I hit the darn thing :biglaugh:
Cheers Bona, was different this one :)
In with a 20 :)
Wow some great shooting! I have to move my target outside for this so i dont shoot up the shop. This one will take some practice time.
I hear you, xtrema. My first shot hit my workbench in my garage, smashing through a digial caliper case. I moved the target ouside after that.
osage 61 may have 2 tens, that middle arrow looks like it might cut the 10 ring. My moneys on him for this week
Well, I'm sure not in Osage's league but here's mine. Very fine shooting brother!
First shot was the worst score, of course but it got a little better. I used last weeks target so have the Xs on those holes. Looks to be 22.

I wanted to practice more (not that it would have helped)but we've had rain every day since Sunday and I bit the bullet and went ahead and shot mine. It was fun b.glass. Thanks for the shot.
i was admitted to the hospital on fathers day and was released today. chronic problems with my leg led to cellulitus. i will have to sit out this round while i heal. don
Sorry to hear that.
Sure hope you recover quickly.
Over&Under,RAU; thanks for the vote on the ten point middle arrow  . However when I pulled the arrows and flattened the paper it confirmed that the arrow had only pushed against the ten ring. In the photo below we can see that it wasn't broken after all. Also, I appreciate the accolades from everyone; this week will be my 15 minutes of archery fame :biglaugh:

Don I just read up on cellulitis...hope you heal well and I hope you heal quickly friend :)
I'm out of this round, and for at least the next couple of months.
I'm going to miss the shooting, all the challenges have been a ball, and I'm sorry I get to miss the target on this week's challenge.
Enjoy the fun shoot, and as it says have fun.
I may be in the same boat as Zradix. I just can't get that arrow to stay up shooting 3 under. I have one more idea I'm going to try tonight.
30 for me, although it was one of luckiest 30's ever. Barely cut the line on bothe 8's.
Great Shooting Osage!!

I'm withdrawing from the tourney.
If anyone wants to keep track, here's what I have so far for scores...
Have a good time shooting!
It was fun.
Hopefully there will be another one sometime.

Nice shooting! Next week use a standard Sharpie to mark your lines please. These lines are a little thick lol. Thanks!
THANKS FOR SHOOTING EVERYBODY!!!
Sorry to see u go zradix
Once again, no pictures; I'm in the Yukon, dependent on campground internet, which is very slow. Anyway, I laid down in some wild rose bushes and tried this position, which ain't easy. After a few practice shots, my first shot for score was an 8; I thought maybe this wouldn't be bad, after all. My second shot proved different, however, and I missed the plate entirely. My third was back in the 8 ring, however. So a 24 is my score for this round.
I hope that if I have to use this shot for the real thing, that I am really close, like about a foot.
I wish I could send pics right now; I'm at a place called Dawson Peak, near Teslin, YT. It is absolutely beautiful.
Sorry to see u go zradix
]Nice shooting! Next week use a standard Sharpie to mark your lines please. These lines are a little thick lol. Thanks!

i understand, however the thickness of the lines shouldnt matter if the outermost edge of the line is at the desired diameter. shouldnt matter being that it is a "fun" shoot. regardless i will use a smaller sharpie next week or a felt pen. Remove my target and i will reshoot tomorrow lol. Thanks!
Laxbowman you don't have to re-shoot. Your right if the outer edge is the diameter it doesn't matter how thick the mark is. If you keep it at that diameter, keep using the marker, it just looked like you traced the circles with a pen, then with the marker and made it thicker. But you are right this is a fun shoot so please don't get upset. I just don't want anybody to get upset. Anyways good shooting and thanks for shooting!
snakebit, ur right on the middle circle having a line, i couldnt find my tape so i used a can of beans which is a little smaller. all good here!
I will try to get my results up soon
I doubt I get a score in this week or next week. Last night I broke my string shooting and that was the last string I had, it takes 3rivers 5-7 days before I get what I order. Also, next week is wheat harvest for me, if I can get my hands on a endless loop string I'll give it a go. Other wise count me out for a couple weeks, sorry guys.
snakebit40
What length string do you need? I have a box full of strings of various lengths.
It might get you by until you can get a new one.
All I need is your mailing address and string length.
God bless,Mudd
PS: I can get it to you overnight.
Thanks for your good work Zradix; keep in touch.
Zradix sorry to see you go bud, come back soon and thanks much for keeping track with that spreadsheet :)

Ok here is mine for the week.I couldn`t get the arrow to stay on the shelf so I improvised.I held a arrow in my bow hand to keep the arrow pushed up on the shelf. It was super windy so my plate didn`t lay down flat.My first shot was the one in the 6 that barely cut the 8 line.I`m counting that as a six since it tore the plate from the plate being blown around and not laying flat.26 for me this week.
sorry for the picture size.photobucket is acting squirrely today
Zradix, sorry to see you withdraw! Do you intend to continue scorekeeping? Snakebit40, if you'd like, I can pick up the scorekeeping--you've seen my spreadsheet, and I can load weeks 2-4.

Brett that sounds great! Thank you!!!
im with you Z wk #4 big ol 0 for me theres always next week
Guys I must apologize for not being a part of last weeks shot and it looks like this weeks one will have to escape me as well. I am absolutly slammed at work and a few other irons in the fire have kept me from particicpating.
I will catch up next week hopfully and the weeks thereafter if I can still play?

Of course you can!!
All right, maybe I'm just getting old, but did anyone else find this difficult? I felt like I was trying to work on my car's transmission and shoot my longbow at the same time.
I couldn't hit the target for nothing. Maybe that's why I never practice lying down.
Anyway, my first shot was a 4 (upper left) x 2 = 8, plus 8 (lucky shot) plus 4 (upper right barely hit), should give me a 20.
Man that was a tough round.
Bona,
Have to say, I'm really glad you picked this now. It reaffirmed how great and natural of a weapon a stickbow is. Yes, my first shot caused my limb to hit the grass and my arrow to skip off the ground  , and I thought this is never gonna work. Then, pinching the nock and applying draw tension the arrow stayed on the rest at total horizontal :scared: While I shot pretty bad, for being on my back worried about my arrow falling off the shelf I was shocked when my third arrow hit bull (practicing of course).
Put me down for a big ole 14, first arrow was a 4, second missed (barely), and 6 on my third.
(http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/605/shoot4.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/405/shoot4.jpg/)
well the group is better than the score,,,
week 4 score is a 16. all shots were a 4
that was very interisting round,
(http://i588.photobucket.com/albums/ss321/Ladams/P1010261.jpg)
This shot has been fun for some and nothing but frustrating for some. I'm glad for those who have enjoyed it. And even a 4 is a kill shot and nothing to be ashamed of. Thanks to everyone who gave this shot "a shot".
I still have to post mine. 4H is this week, I'm still trying to get a decent group. I wanted someone to video me shooting but I can't get anyone to do that for me.
Nothing wrong with this challenge, I think it helps highlight the versatility of stickbows and it can translate into some pretty contorted shot opportunities while hunting. Plus its just plain fun! Most folks I shoot with try goofy stuff all the time anyway.
My attempt for the week:
1 = 6 x 2 = 12
2 = 6
3 = 4
Total = 22 pts
sorry guys a carnt shoot this week work has pined me against the wall
I scored the first arrow in the 4 ring and the other two off the plate for a whopping 8 pts. Needless to say I'd let the bull walk or at least sit or kneel for the shot at risk of scaring him rather than wounding him. Good challenge. I do like the diffent shooting scenarios as it gives you an idea of your limitations and abilities. Good practice.
I shot a 26. pictures in a few min.

bottom is 2 shots(1st+3rd)
just shot this one today. i missed the first two and picked up a four on the third.
4.

Here's my score. ~ 20 ~
First and second shots were 4's, last shot an 8.
I've never shot this way before. Great way to push the envelope. Thanks. Score...26.

My first was great for what I expected with line cutter low of center on the 8 line. Then I managed a clean miss of the whole plate. I got back on track with a high wide 6. I shot one more and got a 4 just for fun. It was not that hard to keep the arrow on the shelf because I have done some back bending shoots, but I had a hard time trying to get good back tension and anchor consistent on my back. It was like I couldn't get my shoulder blades to move.
2x8+6=22

Derrr...the first one was the miss--I got a 10. Hey fellas I'll have a new scoresheet up in a jiff.
ps Osage61 you are way out in front this week!
SOOOOO...THANK YOU B.glass for an original, unusual scenario! I'm the new guy picking up the scoresheet from Zradix. After wk 4, Osage61 has the reins for wk 5's challenge. looper is out in front with a consistently great 114, followed by gto_guy and xtrema312 with stout 112's!
There are many scores still out. Following snakebit40's lead, I am accepting any make-ups; just say what week you are shooting, and post in the current thread. Don't post in the old thread! I'm not going to backtrack.
Cheers, Brett

OK Brett thanks, also thanks for taking up the job of score keeper!
Brett, that picture of you is pretty cool! Mind if I save it?
I don't mind. I didn't attempt your advice in how to hold the string to keep the arrow on the shelf--you can see I'm holding it up with my bow hand pointer finger. The hardest thing for me (took some practice) was establishing an aimpoint. Very disorientating--I was happy to hit the plate two out of three times!
Thanks for accepting make ups. here is week 3... 24
