Title: Dental Floss String Nock Question
Post by: eddings220 on June 16, 2011, 10:08:00 PM
Hey Guys, I have seen a few comments about using Dental Floss as a string nock. How is this actually tied on? I did a search and did find a video from McDave that was good, but was wondering if that is the normal way or are there other ways to tie one on.  Thanks.

You can use unwaxed floss, keeping it tight and finish with a whip finish similar to tying flies. Use a 6" piece of floss, form a narrow loop, then lay it over the nocking point, and finish with 6-7 wraps over the loop toward the closed loop, run the winding floss thru the loop, cut off, leaving 2", and pull under the last wraps. Cut the excess and use fly tying head cement or super glue to seal. Keep everything tight.

I just start with a half hitch, wrap the floss around the string a few times, with the occasional half hitch, to make a ball, tie off the two ends with a reef knot, melt the tag ends down, and top off with a thin coat of Duco.

I like ribbon floss too- use a nail knot to finish and CA glue on top.

We use waxed floss and after it is tied on put more wax on it and very carefully, with a match, melt the wax into the floss. Been doing that for over 40 years.

Can you tie this so they can be "screwed" up and down the string / adjusted?

don't matter too much what kinda fiber/string/thread/floss/whatever ya use to create the nock point.  i put a few drops of thin cya on the finished knot and  it's good to go.

I do it like Javi.  Just don't get it too tight or it won't twist up and down. Oh yeah, I put a drop or two of super glue on over the square knot to keep everything in place.  Good luck.  :campfire:

I also prefer the unwaxed, ribbon floss by glide. You can find it at Walmart in a fairly large container. Should last you a lifetime.

I used the mint flavored. On slow days I chew on my nock point.

The mint floss can also serve as something of a draw check.
That minty fresh smell tells you you're there.
