Since May 13th, I've been struggling with this little rhyme.
Be careful of the words you say,
Keep them soft and sweet.
For you never know from day to day,
Which words you'll have to eat.
I must confess, since the first day (many years ago) I saw a 3 piece take down longbow, I never liked them. On many occasions, to the bowyer's dismay, I expressed that opinion to their face. That's not a longbow, don't call it one.
On May the 13th, just a little over 4 weeks ago at the Glenn Parker Memorial Shoot in Chester, TX I began an emotional struggle with that little verse. You see, it was on that day as I casually strolled by the Bob Lee Archery tent, and began looking at all the bows on display, one caught my eye. It wasn't on display, but was on the table next to Rob Lee, Bob's son. It was Rob's personal bow, a 3 piece take down longbow.....62" 52# @ 28". Rob told me that he had just completed this bow for himself two weeks ago and had already taken two good sized feral hogs. On both occasions, he said, "The arrows never seemed to slow down as each passed completely thru each hog." There goes the salesman's pitch, I thought. "Would you like to shoot it?" "Nope" was my curt reply and I walked away. Several times that weekend, I found myself back at the Bob Lee Archery tent. After more talking and with great reluctance on my part, I took Rob's bow to the practice range. I shot 6 arrows thru the bow and carried it back to Rob. "What is your delivery schedule like?", I asked. "Four to five weeks", was the reply. "I need to order one."
This morning JJ called me. My new bow (I still can't call it a longbow just yet) will be delivered TOMORROW. I'll post up some pictures when it gets here. But in the mean time, I'm going to the kitchen. I've got to find the brown sugar, honey and maple syrup. Got to find something to sweeten up my words.
Danny
Yes sir, we all could use some "Sweetenin Up" from time to time.... Good Luck with the bow Danny !!
Froggy
I said the same thing for years till I decided that for travel, they are very handy, and then I got my hands wraped around a RER LXR, and never looked back. I even bought a new set of limbs that got delivered this past Monday.
Takes a real man to eat his own words and tell about it...good man!
What Lee said X's 2

Welcome to the dark side, Danny! :D Call them what you will,I call them SAWEEET! :goldtooth:
Bill
Tisk, tisk. Well, that's what you get for being rude! A brand new bow! serves you right.
LOL,
Said the same thing about carbon arrows, now that is all I shoot,LOL. Do still have some Sweetlands, but that is it.
  Danny, you just made my week! I've said a lot of things concerning traditional archery, only to change my mind and end up with something I said I wouldn't. I'm surprised my wife still has a head full of hair!
Dang, felt the same way myself until I put together a Morrison ILF riser with Sky ILF longbow limbs.....Whoa!!!
That's why I'd never say anything like that Danny...lol
The worst or best I have said is..."No more new bows for me!" and I do mean it too!
God bless,Mudd
I was with Danny at Chester when he made the decision to buy that 3 piece takedown. He didn't even tell me he had ordered the bow until we were in the truck heading home. Said he was mad at me for not putting up more of a fight. What can I say? It doesn't make any difference what he shoots, he always shoots good. Two seconds at Chester and a 5th at the TX LB Championsips two weeks later. If this bow can change my buds mine about three piece longbows, it must be a good one. Congrats Danny. Can't wait to shoot it. :bigsmyl:
"The worst or best I have said is..."No more new bows for me!" and I do mean it too!"
Sure you do Roy. Sure you do.
Still took an open mind to try and allow yourself to truly experience the hybrid 3 piece.
The words you have to eat in this case will actually taste pretty darn good.
Congrats on your new bow and congrats for moving forward.
Anybody selling a one-piece Zipper?
Killdeer :biglaugh:

Congrats on the new bow Danny. Have fun shooting her in and have a happy Father's Day.
Congrats & enjoy that evil stick!!!
Words are like an arrow. Once released, you can bring neither back.
Words can also be much more devasting than the most optimumally designed penetrating arrows.
Words can also be the great healer and open us to take in full pleasure of the experience.
Words, still, are merely just words. We determine ourselves, many unknowingly, how we wish them to make us feel. You have chosen words and decided to enable yourself to fully enjoy this new experience.
Congrats for crossing the mountain!!
As was promised, the Bob Lee arrived this afternoon. And, as I promised, here are a few pics. Bob Lee "Natural" Series, 62" 52# @ 28", shedua and curly maple riser and limb veneers.

Thanks for the nice, large slice....had to add a little more sugar, but I got the last bite down.
:bigsmyl:
No problem Ric, I usually have to eat the whole pie :bigsmyl:
*looks over shoulder at wife* :D
beautiful bow
Beautiful curly maple, I am sure she will be a shooter.
I'd eat a truck-load of Humble Pie over a bow that sweet! Well Done.
Very nice Ric, I told you it was worth the wait.
The pics show why I answered the "most beautiful three piece riser" post the way I did. Pretty much anything from Bob Lee is simply beautiful IMO.
Congrats!
Very nice!!
That forward riser always catches my attention.
Congrats!!!
Ric, the brown sugar and honey ,and a few other seasonings and spices make "crow" tolerable, just wah it down with plenty of a good beverage......, crow ain't that bad, just when folks watch you eat it......
One afternoon in the 100 degree sun and 35 mph wind gusts does not lend itself to tuning a new bow. However, I can say, I am very pleased with the performance and feel. So far, I haven't found an arrow it doesn't like.

If the truth was known, we could all use a zipper once in a while I think. I Can't begin to say how many times I've had to eat ill-chosen words.
Thanks for telling this story.
Joe
A great atory and an Outstanding Bow! Excellent pictures.
i know how you feel ric i feel the same way about take down long bows but i shot one from striker built by rick ellis and fell in love with it....mine should be here next week...the one i shot was rick's personal bow and he said he only ever built one like it and i said if you want to sell me a bow you will copy it as closely as possible...lol...i cant wait to get it...waiting 5 months is really killing me....

5 months! I waited almost 5 weeks and it was getting me down. :)
congrats buddy!!!!sweet...mark
Ric O'Shay,
Maybe the word is Hybrid, something between a recurve and a longbow. I believe the word longbow originated with the English Longbow, while the shorter and somewhat flatter Hill style longbow was first called an American Semi-Longbow.
When John Schulz set up shop, Mrs Hill got him to change his name from LongBow Archery, to American Longbow. After that, manufacturer's started calling it a longbow. I guess more than one word is too many.
I am not sure who coined the term Hybrid, but it still fits, after all it sounds better than Short American Semi-Longbow, just thinking outload. Anyway, it looks like a winner.
That is a beautiful bow, and they do build some very nice bows.
When discussing Longbows with folks I generally preface the word longbow with a descriptor such as English, Hill, Reflex/Deflexed, Hybrid etc. Conceivably any of those could also be a Takedown; either 3 piece or two piece. I've shot the take downs and except for the added weight they seem to shoot just as well as their non-takedown counterparts and certainly have their place if one is going to travel; especially via airline. For me I just prefer the feel and weight of a one piece bow. And since I most likely will never travel in anything other than my pickup, I can indulge myself.
Were I to plan a hunt where airlines are the necessary mode of travel, I'd have a takedown R/D longbow in my kit.
The older I get, the more words I've et'....
Danny I know you will enjoy it.I just got back from Bear Quest V and killed a nice bear with my short riser Bob Lee 50@28" makes a 60" bow and very sweet to handle.I also have recurve limbs 56" 53@28" but don't get put on the riser much after I got the longbow limbs.Kip

Congratulations on the bear. The more I get to shoot this bow, the better I'm liking it. Had thought about a set of recurve limbs, but may wait until after this fall hunting season.
