I'm new to the site and traditional archery as well. I've shot recurves before but not recently. I've got a Black Widow PSR II that will arrive Tuesday and I'm curious to know which tip protectors to use. Leather, rubber, plastic?? I'm sure I'll have lots of questions and I'll be using the search button a bunch but if I can't find it I will be asking!! Looking forward to contributing to the board as I undergo my newest archery challenge! Happy Shooting! :archer:

I've always used rubber. It's easy and cheap.
Years ago, I had a bow that I was able to bareshaft just fine, but when I put a tip protector on it I was not able to get the same level of forgiveness in that bow. I finally ended up taking the tip protector off the bow and I have never used one since then. Instead, I just rest it on my shoe when I am standing around...or look for a clean spot to set it on when I prop it up against a tree or something. Of course, occasionally it will get a bit of dirt or something on the end, but when I pick it back up I will wipe the dirt off the bottom tip to prevent much from getting into the bowstring...and other than that I don't concern myself with "tip protection." I have never reconsidered this, as I have since come to learn placing any weight in an unbalanced portion (once the bow is completed and tuned) is less than ideal.
I use the rubber ones. I find them to be too long for my bows, so I roll them down a little, like a cuff. They not only protect the tip, they keep the lower loop of the bowstring from falling off when the bow is unstrung.
Killdeer
Rubber ones for me.. but I tune the bow with them on..
Rubber ones here also.
I'm with ring neck, and I always use them.
Your bow will have a rubber protector when it arrives. First time you feel it stop a bumped bottom tip you'll be glad you used it.
Laced leather ones look cool but also can hold moisture.
rubber
I use the rubber ones, easy to remove and replace if I have to take it off to clean the bow tips.I use them on all my bows.
rubber
Rubber on all my bows . It is important to remember the moisture is the enemy of limb tips. You want to take the tip protector off if you get moisture in it. Let it dry out and then put it back on the bow.
Rubber on all my bows as well.

Rubber on my bows
I use a rubber limb tip on the bottom limb. I cut them so they are not as long. I like the protection when I am sitting in a ground blind. I don't have to worry about the tip sitting unprotected on our often moist ground while I try not to move.
I really appreciate all the feedback! I don't intend to drag it but I do hunt out of ground blinds a lot especially in the midwest. Will look for some rubber tip protectors! Any pros or cons using plastic??
Thanks,
Buddy
Despite my earlier comment, I would say that IF one is going to use one, the rubber ones TRIMMED to just barely go over the string loop is probably ideal. Keep it minimal though.
The one that gave me problems was a store bought one made of leather. I have seen some VERY small leather ones that were home made.
I have had bad luck with the shiny black rubber/plastic ones not fitting in the first place, or falling off of the tip when I am not looking.
If the string locks it on, it will be fine. That means either a leather one, which is great in dry climes, or the plastic Saunders one. In wet places, the leather will stay wet for a long time, which is bad for the tip. Even the rubber ones should be removed after hunting in the wet, to allow any water collected to dry out, rather than sitting on the limb tip.
The rubber ones that I use do not get locked onto the tip by the string, but they seem to hold fast and do the job.

I use the rubber ones. The plastic ones from AAE are the best.
rubber here also
Trimmed rubber works well
Anybody use one on a Shrew? What brand works?
I also use the rubber ones, they don't look quite as good, but the better looking hard plastic ones seem to pop off quite often. DK.
Hey Stickslinger74, they sell the rubber ones at 3 Rivers archery, one of the tradgang sponser, a great company to work with, item number 4248X at 3.99 each. As previously mentioned, the hard plastic ones have a tendency to pop off, which when hunting if unnoticed can be very hard on your limb tips. DK.
Guess I'm in the minority here in not using one at all. On some bows it doesn't matter, but my Widow (PSAV) is definately a little quieter without it. And I'm just too lazy (and forgetful) to take it off everytime it gets wet.
I use the rubber ones. If you are new here, you have to post some pic. of that new bow when you get it.
There was a thread on here awhile back about inexpensive bow tip protectors. Go to Walmart and buy some Walmart brand Pacifiers, 3 in a pack for under $2. Cut the pacifier end off and put it on the bow tip; it really does work.
What? Am I the only "traditionalist" here? :biglaugh:
I only use leather tip protectors!

(Except on bows with antler tips... I hate to cover them up!)
I don't use one. Don't use an armguard either. Guess I'm weird.
Absolutely not necessary so why even consider one?
I make mine from surgical tubing, comes in different sizes It's open on the end lets water drip through slide it on to just over string trim off with a little over hang on tip
I made 3 orders (kept adding to it!) from 3 Rivers yesterday. I'll use the rubber ones but have the string through it to keep it in place. I want to tune my bow with everything on it as it will be when hunting, full quiver, tip protector, string silencers, etc. I don't see any point in tuning a bare bow only to add to it and possibly have a surprise waiting to happen! Thanks again for all the helpful information!!
Buddy
Rubber, hands down they stay on the bow.....
I always practice "safe bow" and slide on a rubber tip.
I really like the surgical tubing idea.
Rubber when I use them ,but on most bows it changes the feel of the bow on the shot and can make a change to tune. Some of my bows have them and some don't. If I felt I really needed one on my bottom limb and didn't like the feel of the bow or tune with it, I would just put one on each end.
Baby pacifiers, what a great idea! Cheap too!
rubber never made a tuneing issue for me
