Out shooting a bit near the house, ran accross this "Barker" and managed to put a good hit on him. One blade from the Big Jim 300 grain VPA hit him accross the bridge of the nose at 18 yards. Few small twitches and it was over. 58" Widow PSA II, 70# @ 30", shooting 31" Gold Tip 75/95's tipped with the a for mentioned Big Jim Big 3.

Was out shooting again today and got another one with the Kwyk Styk, 58", 61# @ 30", shooting a 31" Gold Tip 55/75 with a 200 grain Snuffer on the end. Just over 15 yards and literally within 2 yards from where I shot the one the other day...

Went out again today... Took the Morrison Shawnee, 62", 64#, shooting 31" Gold Tip 55/75 with 175 grain Judos. 16 - 17 yard shot downhill caught him right between the shoulder blades facing me, exit out the left hip. Had to step on him to finish him a bit quicker.
Three males in three outings with three different bows and three shots.

Went out again today, took my 60" MOAB, 62#, shooting 31" Gold Tip 55/75 with 175 grain Magnus 1 on the end. And where there are Males, there will be Females... Missed her with the first shot at about 12 yards and got a second shot on her off the side of a tree while she peeked around it trying to find me, maybe 19 yards. You can see the damage...

Took my 60# Morrison Shawnee today, shooting 31" Gold Tip with 175 grain Magnus 1 on the end. This was about an 8 yard shot, caught him at the back of the lungs on the right side angling forward and pretty much took out everything on the left side. (This is the cleanest side you are seeing here...).

I've only got one more bow in the rack that I haven't used to take a Squirrel this year... Guess what I'll be carrying the next time I head out... ;)
QuoteJuly 7, 2011
Well, after a weekend camping and fishing with the family I got a chance to head out again tonight. Never been out there at this time of the day, didn't see any Squirrels, but did see a few Voles... I was shooting my 68# MOAB with 31" Gold Tips and 175 grain Judos. This shot was about 7 yards and I had to hold at full draw for about 15 seconds to pinpoint him in the fading light... I hit him in the head but truthfully was just looking at center mass... Even so, with the tangle of stuff he was in I had to blood trail him for about 4 feet to find him, luckily I still had a flashlight in my Arrowmaster from the Solana hunt...

Good shot, but talk about overkill. :biglaugh:
Great shooting.
a head shot no less!
well done
god shot! congrats!
Sweet
That would do it! :biglaugh:
Good shot!
Nice shot!!

Well im glad you hit him in the head, idk if you would have brought him down without perfect shot placement. :D :knothead:
jk good job brother
Good shooting but is it squirrle season there?
I'm thinking you made his/her partner a widow...lol
Good shooting!!
God bless,Mudd
Way to go Jeff! Good Shot!

Yes it is squirrel season there. They have a 9 month season.
Yeah, but how was the blood trail?
:D
Nice shooting......squirrels are tough...not sure if there is such a thing as 'overkill' on a squirrel.
:bigsmyl:
That will answer the age old question, is #70, and a 300gr broad head enough for squirrels. Great shooting.
"Overkill" is when you purposely run over them with the car!
Fox squirrels are tough, right there with a cat!
No meat was harmed in the shot! That's what counts!
Great shot

From the pic Charlie I think Jeff pretty much gave him a heart attack with that set-up.
I know it was a bit risky going after such a dangerous quarry without a narrow 2-blade single bevel, but I got lucky... No need for the backup guide to put a finishing shot into him with the 375 H&H. ;)
Was really just testing out the broadhead. Shot it at stumps, dirt, sticks and the like and just a bit of touch up and it is ready to go again. None the worse for wear! Great heads!
Oh, and David is correct, Squirrel season is May 15 - Jan 31... Fried him up with mushroom gravy and biscuts... yummy!
Good shooting Jeff!!
If you shot him in the shoulder do you think you could get a pass through?
:dunno:
Nice shot man, I bet that bow and arrow combo can take out jsut about anything!
Bob.
I'm glad to see you used a 70#. Far too many hunter's use light weight bows (under 50#), for tree rats, and that is just plain unethical...LOL!!!!!! Good shot!!!
A great shot for sure. The red squirrels around the house are wise to me and are half way to the tree from under the bird feeder before the arrow gets there.
Fred and Howard would be proud!!!!!!!!!!
Jeff, you better be careful or Robert will put you up on that looooooofty pedestal again! Good shot. Whats this Widow business, just playin or do you have future plans with it?
Good Job
Oh no Izzy, I always have a Widow SA/PSA hanging around... Sentimental reasons for the most part... I had a SA III that put me over the top from the wheels back at the turn of the century... They just seem to shoot themselves. I'm sure it will get use again. ;)
How far did you have to track him.? Good shot. Im like some others theres no overkill with squirrels.
Is 70# enough to hunt squirrel? ....
Just kidding, great shot! :biglaugh:
Should have read the 2nd page couple folks beat me to it.

Where I live, you get 12 days and that's it !! Don't know why there is such a short season on such a plentiful animal.... :dunno:
Well done,Jeff.
Did someone mention CATS?
Story sounds a little squirrelly to me . Great shot and I know what you mean about them widows . And Buckskin them wildcats are tough .
Wow man that's a good setup for Rino! It doesn't matter what side of the tree the squirrel is on, just shoot through the tree!! Nice Shot.

Gosh Jeff. You shoot them all in the head! You are a terrific shot. Now shoot one in the head with your Morrison and your Moab!
Dang son....Nice shootin'
Good shooting!!!
Nice shootin'
Already took one with my MOAB last year... 35 yard shot that center massed him, and a follow up at 18 just behind the ear... 31" Gold Tips with 175 grain Judos... 60", 60#.

Maybe head out and see what the Shawnee can bring home... ;)
I've always said that if they were 200#, we wouldn't dare go into the woods!
Nice work on some tough critters.

Man am I glad I'm not a squirrel in OK!
Darn nice shooting!
I just wish the woods around the house were full of Hogs too... We've got our fair share here in Oklahoma, but these Squirrels are just a blast and plentiful.
Yup....The Fat Lady has Done Sung for those Boys!! :archer:
1 more and you can have a good supper! :clapper:
Great shooting.
great shootin' buddy :clapper: :archer2:
Nice shooting!
Nice shootin'! I have to wait until September to try again. I would like to try some cooked buffalo wing style.
Squirrel, nothing better or more challenging for that matter!
Good shootin
Can't wait till squirrel season opens here.
And I was worried about your penetration on the last one  ! Great shooting.
Good Shooting!
Geez, head shootin' squerrils! I've got a lot of work ahead of me to get my game up to that level. Nice shootin', and thanks for the motivation!
man you are on!!!
Man that brings back alot of memories,Squirrels is fun!
don't let what everyones saying about your set-ups get to ya,sounds and looks perfect to me ,besides all these fellas don't realize if one charges that extra weight will come in handy,I got my ankles chewed once and that was enough!
Thanks all, I'm not letting the jabs get to me at all... these are the bows I have and shoot because they shoot for me. If I was shooting a 40#'er I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be posting any critter pics! My release isn't good enough to get off the string with a bow that light. My hat goes off to those of you that can!
I've worked on it a lot but all I figure out by shooting lighter bows is I can't shoot them consistently. But, the good thing is the lighter bow work does help out my release with the heavier bows... Hopefully I can figure out the release with lighter bows before I have to due to age. Heading out sometime tomorrow with one of my MOAB's to see if there is another "Barker" that will make a mistake and give me a shot at him...
Good luck and good hunting.

Great shooting again! Keep it up and OK might have to suspend the season... or not.
Good shot Jeff! The squirrel population is in big trouble in O.K.
Doesn't look like your gettin' much practice at tracking though. Nice shootin'!
Holy Moly, You cut her head almost clean off,LOL. Great shooting.
Four bows... four squirrels... and what, six arrows? Well done, Jeff!
Nice shootin man!!!
Finally catching up....been in a whirlwind....still am really.
Thanks for sharing Jeff....we will miss you come Solana!!!

Jeff,
What kind of wood is that on your Shawnee riser? Looks very nice!
PM sent Michael...
How bout that hillbilly headshootin!!
Well done
Just let your nose take you to the camp fire.
Great shootin' buddy! We'll sure miss ya this January :campfire:
Yeah Curt, missing that hunt already... With the 55K loss on the house in KY I just couldn't swing the funds to come up with the deposit... and well the hunt. Still paying off "double" but at least we can see the light at the end of the tunnel now rather then throwing $'s away with the house payment and rent here...
Anyway, back to better things... Heading out tomorrow with my 68# MOAB to see if I can finish off the "Bowrack Slam" on the Squirrels... Wish me luck... I'm sure either way I'll get me some stumps! ;)

You went a little light with the MOAB on that vole, eh?
Well, I just got a bow back in my bowrack that I saved... check the story: History of a bow... (http://tradgang.com/noncgi/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=106393)
Shot her a bit yesterday, and took her out this morning. Morrison Cougar, 62", 55# @ 29", shooting a 30" Gold Tip 35/55 with 125 grain judos. Took this hoss of a vole at about 11 yards, hit solidly in the right lung.

If I get enough time off to get close to them! ;) Haven't done this much "hunting" in the summer months in my life, I'm having a ball! Do have a couple of new places I'm going to be hunting this fall, hopefully they look as good then as they do now...
