Title: How is your elk draw??
Post by: beachbowhunter on June 08, 2011, 07:03:00 PM
I just got the word (email) from New Mexico that I drew my first choice for the second year in a row.   :jumper:
Can't wait. Now I have to focus on getting in shape after my hip surgery next Friday. That's going to hurt but it will be worth it!

Has anybody else gotten the thumbs up on tags?

I drew a prefrence point and my second choice, but I knew I would draw the second choice for Elk.

Good luck on the Hip Surgery, don't overdue the rehab, listen to your PT

Man, you are lucky! Two years in a row?! I know people who live in N.M. and haven't drawn in several years. But that's the way it is with no preference pts.
I drew a LE elk tag in Utah after 8yrs. Going to be a fun year!

I live here and got my third choice. Looks like I will need to carry a bunch of judos. I'll be shooting a bunch of rabbits while chasing the one elk in the unit. Not happy.

:dunno:  Won't find out until around July first. Wyoming like's to hold our $ for a long time. They make a bunch off interest.

Yeah, what's up with that Shedrock?! I guess you can't make too many plans for hunting other states when you don't find our until one month before the season starts.  Seems like all the states should just have a drawing in Jan. or Feb. Oregon you don't find out until mid June. Kind of ridiculous.

Congrats to those that drew !!!

I've drawn NM twice but not this year only California left for draw hunts...

Good luck with your hip but that tag is some great motivation for you   :)

I drew again this year in a good unit, hope the fires die down and we get some rain at some point.  We need it bad and so do the elk!...Shawn

Ermont, scedvm, I drew 6A ELK-2-184 (first archery). We will be hunting in the mountains east of Cuba. Got a great guide (Rob Degner) who knows it inside out. Same place I shot the bull in my avatar in 2008.

I had a left hip resurfacing last January and hunted elk in Sept. It held up great but I ground down the right side doing it!  this is a little close for comfort but couldnt be helped. Thanks for the well wishes.

Did anyone happen to notice that 2nonresidents drew 1st choice in the state of N.M. Hmmm just wondering if those puters notice the difference between $91 and $781. Naw probly not huh? Well guess I've just received my last permit.

Cool Arrow, There is a reason I have not applied in my home state for over 10 years. I did it as a favor to a friend and got screwed again. Third choice, I hate to think I'm gonna have to burn a weeks vacation for that.

I drew my 3rd elk tag in 3 years but it's in Northern NM and not as popular as most units. There's still plenty of elk though and it hasn't suffered the drought that most of NM has.

I went 10 for 10 on elk draws in high demand units then went 1 for 10 after that. At this point in my life I go with the best odds and good scouting just to get the chance to hunt elk in my home state.

beachbowhunter,
6A can be a tough unit but there are a few areas that get little pressure and hold a lot of animals.

I used to hunt a very popular unit , but I had three hunters from my home state of Mich. apply on my app. We always drew permits. When we would take a look around we could find no more N.M. lisc. plates . It seemed as though Penn., Oh. Cal., Minn, Ind. and on and on We we we re the only people from this state that wanted to hunt here. Does it sound as though I'm a bit bitter? Maybe so, but I see the same things happening all the way from D.C. all the way down to my county and city gov. Sorry I just had to unload.

Sorry I didn't mean to hit the add reply button because I wasn't finished. I'm angry. Why have we set back and allowed people to overrun our lives? I don't believe I made it clear that in those days when I received those permits , my cost would been about $60. With my friends it was in th thousands. Is this fair? Yes there is the  law of average, and we allknow that some people are inherintly lucky. But does anyone else out there believe that the system is in control? As I stated in my first reply I doubt If I wil ever again have the opportunity to hunt in my home state, but I had to speak out. Does anyone else experience this in their home state?
Well I guess I got that off my chest. Let's hear if you think I'm a butthead.

Norb,

Congrats!

Sorry to hear about the hip.  You need to find a good waterhole this fall!

Need to come out and hunt whitetails with us one of these years.

Larry,

Have you joined UBNM? Are you familiar with how the draw will be affected next year? We'll get  slightly better odds but it's just a start.

There are also some units here that are easier to draw but still have good elk numbers if you know where to look.

Chris, how about 2012?  I am up for it.

I have been following the NR tag issue in NM a little and know it has been controversial. I don't know all the details. My friends have been hunting 6A and 6C for 10 years and are about 30 percent on draws as non residents. We use a guide and I think that helps.  If it is any consolation I will probably never draw a Tule elk tag in my home state.

Dang Norbert I had no idea you had hip issues.I did not think guys that were built that low to the ground could have such issues.
Dont forget to milk it for all its worth with your lady. She would be disapointed it you did'nt.

It's not one of the popular units, but it will work for me.  :bigsmyl:

I'm opting for o er the counter tags in CO.  I hate to part with the $ though.  Remember when it was only 250? 550 seems like I'm gettin robbed.

BSBD:  No, I'm not a member , but I'm giving it some serious thought. I've done exactly what you reccomended. Yesterday I received a permit for an unpopular area which probably contains 1 elk for every 50 permits. Oh well who ever said life is fair? I pretty much got it off my chest last night. Once in a while I just have to vent. At least nobody so far has told me that I'm full of crap.  Larry

Thank you guys for confirming. If you have enough dinero to apply for 52 states you'll be the winners. Piss on the home boys. I'm not blaming you. I just believe the systen should be set up a little different so that residents had a fair shot. Guess i didn't get it all off my chest last night. Good luck.

I hesitate to respond, because I really don't want to argue Cool Arrow.  But in NM residents get a minimum of 78% of the tags this year.  Starting next year it will go to 82% from what I have read.  That's a pretty big advantage over the NR.

Of course, there are more residents applying for the available tags than non-residents, but in reading the draw odds reports put out by Game & Fish the chances of a resident drawing a tag are still better than a non-resident.

No doubt some units are tougher to draw than others.  I have never drawn one of the high demand units like the Gila, etc.  The second tier units don't receive as much attention.

Whip I have been thinking the same thing as you because I don't like the conflict either.  If you study the draw odds report your odds are much better for us residents than for non-residents and with the revamping of the draw and tag prepayment the draw is getting much more reasonable anyways.  I drew my second HD unit in as many years but have been blanked before also.  With a no preference point system it is a complete random draw each year and the resident and non resident tags are alloted prior to the draw and have nothing to do with one another anyways.

Joe as usual you are spot on. Also, there is a slight preference if you go through an in-state outfitter. I know the in-state DIY hunters had heartburn over that part but the percentage of overall tags going to NR is very low.  We feel very lucky to have drawn this time, but in past years we've had to buy both a license and a land owner tag to get in the game. When we drew last year, they suggested it was because of the bad economy and the number of applications was way, way down.

Drew CO unit 49.  I'm pumped, hunted it last year with a landowner tag so I know it a little.  Heard they might have cut down on tags in the Unit so I'm optimistic.
