Several of us live here and hunt Sitkas.  If you're interested in big bucks go to Prince of Wales Island or Kodiak.  Although I can't recommend one, there are plenty of outfitters.

The ABC islands around Juneau have lots of'em too.

Early (Aug) in the alpine or Novemeber down lower with deer calls at either place JLB mentioned.  Most of the most accessible parts of the ABC's get hit hard and the deer are much smaller and I expect a winterkill this year.  What kinda weather is Kodiak getting?  In northern Southeast we are getting hammered with snow and pushing 10' for the year.

Notice the active thread where a guy is looking for two more people for a boat hunt.   Sound like a great opportunity to me.

Homer Ocean Outfitters are great and I will be going again. Kodiak Island hunt and you stay on asixty foot boat and get a hot shower anytime. Have any questions let me know. Greg

I second Tradesmen4 on Homer Ocean Charters! He and I were on a blacktail hunt with HOC last fall and it was awesome! Great accomodations, great food, and a whole bunch of deer to chase around. In fact, I'm giving a presentation on our hunt this Saturday at the United Bowhunters of Missouri Festival. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me.

Not sure how the Kodiak population will do but we'll probably have quite a winter kill here.  Back in December guys were taking deer already with signs of starvation.  Lots of snow.

Roger, Sounds like a good opportunity w/bama. From my experience, hunting with fellow Trad Gang guys is great. Last year I went to Alaska and Knife River aka Woody Blackwell went with us. He was a pleasure to be in camp with and helped me a ton once my bou was down. These Trad Gang guys are great. Enjoy your trip. I can testify further, that once you go to AK you always want to go back. I think that the wildness of the place calls to our hunters spirit.

Regards,
Bill

Roger, if you go and are successful, send all the hearts to me.  They will require proper disposal and I'll take them off your hands for free.

Is there any areas that have lots of deer but by a road system.  Im not really a trophy hunter so they dont have to be big.  Just think it would be fun to get up there and bum around with my bow and flyrod

There were a ton of Blacktails all around the immediate town/city of Kodiak when I was there, but then again that was about 15 years ago.......'92 I believe. Not alot of roads, mostly gravel if there are roads, but you can be in the middle of nowhere in a very short while.Awesome action with the flyrod too just about every stream or river you see.

Got to spend roughly 4 months in Kodiak while doing some work for the Coast Guard.I 'd love to make it back some day........

I was there for two years with the Coast Guard just a dumb kid then but was a time I will never forget. Looks like I will just be going fishing this year see what transpires next year!
